Leslie Nielsen Tribute - Police Squad

  • Some funny stuff from a very serious dramatic actor, who late in his career, began a whole new one in a different direction. Known primarily for playing heavies in sci-fi flicks and dramas, Leslie Nielsen eventually took a role in Airplane! (1980), and his deadpan performance of the doctor on a doomed flight made him one of the most sought-after comedic actors and kept audiences laughing for another 20 years. RIP Leslie. Surely, you will be missed. (And I won't call you Shirley!)

No one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of their audience. Nowhere is this more apparent than here. This gem got cancelled after 6 episodes simply because the jokes went over people's heads. And it's only gotten worse since. A tragedy.

I’m not surprised. They come at you awfully fast and most of these clips on CZcams I’ve watched multiple times to really appreciate. This show was also filled with numerous tiny detail sight gags that are hard to pick up the first time (like the Police Squad sign on the door that is inverted, or the clocks that change strangely). Arrested Development faced the same hurdles and it always struggled to gain an audience.

I recently read James Doohan's memoir, "Beam Me Up Scotty". In it he mentions how, as a young actor just starting out on the stage in New York City, she shared his apartment with another young actor, none other then Leslie Nielsen. Later, when Doohan relocated to the Los Angeles area to work on films and TV shows, he stayed for a while with Nielsen and his wife in their home, Leslie having moved out earlier. The thing Doohan says about Nielsen is that he was always a very funny guy, a real live wire, lots of practical jokes, funny sayings, joking around, a very comic sensibility and tendency. Seems that Nielsen was somewhat typecast as a serious actor on account of his voice and appearance, not because of his innate personality or comic tendencies.
Reminds me of other actors who started out doing one kind of thing, then becoming famous for something very different and doing ONLY that for a long time, before finally having enough clout (or just time passing) to get back to roles that suited their actual training and background. A couple actors who come to mind are singers and/or dancers who became known as tough guys, and only resumed doing their original schtick again later in their careers, High Jackman, Christopher Walken, etc.
