A Gorgeous Master System Game: The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck - A Review | hungrygoriya

  • The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck for the Sega Master System is a quality platformer with some of the most beautiful graphics on the system. The catchy soundtrack is great accompaniment around the world with Donald to save his nephews from Magica De Spell. Other than some occasional strangeness with hit detection, it's a great challenge. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

It was a really capable system, which only had one drawback. The sound chip, while there is a way to lock the wave form to "on!" and making your own, this is very CPU intensive. SEGA should just have released it as in Japan, with a FM chip and it would easily have kept up with the PC Engine even. Sure it has less colors, but it can use carts as "RAM" as well as "ROM". And in Europe and Brazil (especially Brazil lol) where it was around longer, it really shined brighter. There are far more games from there that look really stunning. Just... the sound could have been so much better.
Really sprite wise it's mostly a cart space issue, and when The Lucky Dime Caper came out, this was mostly resolved, as ROM space got a lot cheaper and SEGA released a mapper that could handle more as well.

    • @DehnusNorder
      @DehnusNorder Pƙed rokem

@@freddyvidz It did, just not in the USA, it's the longest supported and sold 8 bit console remember (thanks to those silly Brazilians ;) ). Heck in Europe, Codemasters, US Gold (also ported some NES titles to it), Prober entertainment (Alien 3 for the Master System is STUNNING!), Virgin Interactive, Image Works, Domark, etc.
Really a lot of the Homecomputer scene supported the Master System. People keep forgetting that in Europe there NEVER was this "video game crash and NIntendo saved us" bullshit. There was no Nintendo, only home computers, so most games were programmed by the very people that owned the computers. SEGA was the first in many countries. Just when SEGA of America took over for SEGA Europe? The whole marketing went to shit.

No, it's not a tier above anything. Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, the first two Asterix games as well as the first two Sonic games are way better objectively. LDC looks great, has some great animations and the music is well made, but the gameplay isn't quite as good. The floaty (and stiff in the horrible underwater stages) controls, the wonky hit detection and the at times very uninspired level design (indoor levels look just bland) are big negatives

There is a Simpson's episode titled ''The Great Money Caper'' but that came out after this game in the year 2000 and there is a level in the original Lemmings 1991 game called ''The Great Lemming Caper''. A dime apparently means a coin. Before this game I had no idea what a ''dime'' was? Despite watching Ducktales on and off as a kid.

In terms of colors, it's much less restricted than the NES is for its sprites and backgrounds. 16 colors for sprites, and 16 for backgrounds, plus more if you're a clever programmer. The Lucky Dime, sometimes called "The Number One Dime" is a great recurrent theme in the DuckTales canon. Its typically imbued with some sort of luck or magical powers which Magica DeSpell is looking to steal from Scrooge. I love how this game has a little tip of the hat to the comics and the cartoon from our childhood. In the original comics the dime does not possess any magical powers, t's just a sentimental keepsake of Scrooge's. The reason Magica wants it is because she needs old coins owned by rich men as part of an occult/alchemy-type ritual. I feel like this whole "luck" business was invented by DuckTales and if Scrooge got his money through luck or magic it makes him a lot less interesting/sympathetic of a character.

I think both libraries have their fair share of hits and misses, but I also think the Master System doesn't get nearly enough credit for what it does well. There are some great titles to explore. I hope you enjoy what you find when you have a look!

The Master System came out after the NES so it obviously had better graphics capabilities. The thing keeping it back is It's library, the NES totally dominates the MS when it comes to the library of games. One of the reasons is partially Nintendo's policies keeping developers from releasing their games on rival systems, It's why you didn't see Capcom and Konami games on the Genesis until a bit later in It's life.
Still the Master System is a cool system, but I'm a bit partial to the NES just because of the games available for it.

@@Gatorade69 The SMS has a smaller library of games than the NES, but of those games, there are very few that are outright trash, which isn't the case on NES: yes, it has lots of games and third party support, but a huge majority of NES games are trash.
Most SMS games are developed in-house by SEGA, which means the devs really knew the hardware. For this reason, if you come across a SMS game you'e never heard of, it's probably at least decent.
Meanwhile, the list of certified NES classics is, if not fixed then even shrinking, as many feel that influential games like Zelda 1 and Metroid 1 simply don't hold up as games today.
The final thing is NES crypticness. This is a problem, called out often by AVGN and others, that no other system except the NES has: namely, that so many games (Castlevania 2, Milon's Secret Castle, King's Knight, among many, many others) have cryptic features that are necessary to progress and that you have slim, if any, hope of figuring out for yourself. Evidentally this was to sell strategy guides and subscriptions to Nintendo Power. This infuriating crypticness is endemic to the NES and found practically nowhere else.
When you put these factors, together with the SMS's superior graphics, I think the SMS is the clear winner (in terms of sound, the Japanese Master System had the FM sound unit and the Famicom Disk System added extra audio channels, so it's hard to say for sure.)

I would say the NES has my favourite 8-bit games overall; Mario, Castlevania, Mega Man, and Kirby spring to mind, but I must admit it has been difficult finding NES games that were genuinely enjoyable. The SMS overall does have a more consistent library of quality games; I only recall playing a few I found to be legitimately of poor quality, and even some of its highs are up there with the best of the NES. Sonic 1 on it is genuinely one of the best experiences I had playing an old-school 2D Action-Platformer.

@@Gatorade69 No. The NES absolutely does NOT dominate the Master System in terms of catalogue, unless you take the narrow USA market alone into account. If you use the European releases as the true barometer, then it is very even indeed when it comes to the quality of the game library for each system, and in most cases where the same game was released for both systems the Master System release was not just better, but significantly better.

This game's premise is funny to me.
Not long ago I read the original Carl Barks comics which introduced Magica DeSpell, and it explained her deal: she has a belief that objects that are long in the possession of rich and/or powerful people will become enchanted by association. She wants Scrooge's lucky dime for that very reason--in her mind its basically a magical amulet now.
(Later comics would show she's actually correct).
There was even a story penned by Don Rosa about Magica travelling back to steal the dime on the day Scrooge first got it... only to stop herself and end up returning the dime when she realizes that at this point, its just an ordinary dime--its only after Scrooge has owned it for decades that it will be worth stealing.
Sooo.... her stealing the dimes of the nephews kinda doesn't make sense.
But there I am, nitpicking the plot of an 8-bit platform game ;)

I am a big fan of Walt Disney stories in general, but my favorites are those in the Scrooge McDuck universe. Unfortunately, the Master System was completely unknown in my region, with Nintendo having a monopoly over all video games in such a way that many people still refer to any game console as "a Nintendo".
On the topic of the map, maybe a way to justify it is that the Duck stories happen in a world that is very similar to ours, but not the same, so this poorly drawn map is an accurate representation of their world.

While the Frisbee has the range advantage, the hammer makes up for it in raw damage output; often able to knock out bosses with a few quick swings. Basically, damage wise; 1 hammer strike is equivalent to 2 jumps on an enemy's head, and 4 frisbee throws, making quick work of bosses like the Incan statues and the snake charming raven, by merely jumping and swinging at them.

Disney has always maintained a really high standard of quality (love them or hate them), and their 8-bit games are a sterling example of this: Lucky Dime Caper, Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion consistently top "best of" SMS lists, and, on the Nintendo, Capcom's Disney licenses like DuckTales and Rescue Rangers, do likewise.

I would recommend R-Type for good music on the Master System, but that's an arcade port and was also ported to the TG16, so it's probably not be the best version of that game's soundtrack. But I still like it. And on the other end of the spectrum we have Gauntlet with... no music at all! (actually I think the title screen has a jingle)
And yeah, glitches can be weird. I have a Genesis that always glitches out on just about everything I put in it. And Master System games are especially unplayable on it. R-Type, for instance, just resets the game every time you press a button; it's just an endless title loop.

I don't think there's anything missing when it comes to enemies, backgrounds, music and the like. I'm not an expert though, so I may be wrong.

Over this past weekend, I fired up one of my emulator consoles because I wanted to blast through Quackshot - one of my favorite games of all time - but instead ended up checking out the "Game Gear" section instead and playing Sega's _8-bit_ Donald games instead. Both this and Deep Duck Trouble are _freakin' fantastic_ productions from beginning to end. The tiny annoyances I encountered were easily dealt with thanks to Save/Load states (I have no shame; I just wanted to play some breezy games over a lazy Saturday afternoon, lol)
I could've played DuckTales or its sequel on the NES section, but Donald is so much cooler than Uncle Scrooge, let's be honest 😉 It's weird how the two duck franchises were almost entirely split between consoles like that, actually... Duck Tales on the NES, Donald games (mostly) relegated to Sega consoles. With the exception of Magical Quest 3 and Maui Mallard, there really is hardly any Donald representation on the Nintendo consoles. I am convinced that, if Lucky Dime Caper and Deep Duck Trouble were NES games, they'd 100% have the huge cult following that DuckTales enjoys to this day. It really sucks that they're super obscure. Here's hoping famously-Master System-loving Brazil loves these games.

I played through Deep Duck Trouble on the Master System as well and it had a ton of slowdown on the Master System. It was still fun but I didn't like it nearly as much as this one.
And that relationship between Nintendo and Scrooge and Sega and Donald is one I'd never really thought about until now. You're right though. It's a shame more Donald games haven't reached a wider audience.

In the part with the raven and snake, I frame by framed your vid. If you pause it at the first frame of 7:15, you can see Donald taking damage for no reason very clearly. I wanted to see how close you got to see , and yeah thats not "minor hit box error". Thats "wtf hit box error". Eh, so it also glitches and softlocks too? As I prefer ultrasolid gameplay to beautiful graphics, think Ill pass on this one unless I find it really cheap
    Thanks for reviewing!

Snickerings aside, the graphics in Deep Duck Trouble are lovely as well. And yeah, some of the hit detection was a pain. I got hit a lot for no good reason and enemy hitboxes were so small sometimes. The bats are a really good example of that.
