So here's the thing, the 1st Ps game I couldn't really beat it... I eventually did but I had to use help. Like a wuss. So I play this game right now. I had to use help with the guidebook so far. I'm at the part in the guidebook where it tells you how to get the thing so U can save anywhere. So, I'm glad I used the book so far because that thing will make this game bearable for me. Otherwise I would never even hear about it. But, here's the thing from now on I'm giong to play this game with no help and see if I can beat it. So, that was a good time to stop using the guidebook , because I am only going to use it up to the part where it tells about the save thing. Because now I can finish the rest of the game on my own.

I had part 1 on DOS, but wow part 2 looks great!

I owned this game as a kid and I never beat it. I was so enthralled by it though. Especially the well. I remember the first time going down there (without the lantern) and it scared the hell out of me. I didn't play the game for awhile after that! This review brought back so many memories. Despite it's flaws Star Tropics is charming and it warms my heart every time I hear the chip tunes which transport me to a special time from my childhood between 1990-1991. Great review as usual, thanks.

I think the most difficult NES game I’ve beaten was TMNT. The most difficult game that I owned and never beat was Battletoads.

As a trans person, getting transformed into a girl so I could enter a castle of Amazon queens was one of my fav rpg experiences of all time.

My mom got this for me when I was a kid (NES). I couldn’t get past the first level. Nothing but frustration for me. I ended up loaning it to my friend Jerry and never saw it again. This game installed frustration and guilt that’s lived rent free in my head for 35 years.

Back in the day bought the game second hand… no instructions, no internet, no idea what the password was. Looked everywhere for the letter to dip in water. Damn you 747

There is just so much goodness with star tropics. With a challenge that doesn't have you throwing your controller. And the fact that it is more directed towards an English speaking audience is kind if nice. Nice to see more text than you'd see in other NES games. Great review here!

I love how you mentioned the music that plays after killing a boss. I played Star Tropics when it was new and have always remembered that feel good, winning music.

The guardian legend character design reminds me of ryuko/senketsu from kill la kill

you're gonna lose some characters, including punctuation, where they can get away with it, to save on memory of the program. space was small back then.

To sum up the story, for anyone confused: A meteor came down from the heavens, with the Evil One inside of it. I'm not sure how, but it started corrupting the dwarves, and in desperation to prevent the Evil One from obtaining their most precious weapon, the dwarven king swallowed it. You restore the fountains, defeat the Evil One (which yes is an alien), and then continue on your journey. Restoring peace to the land and the tree of life or whatever it's called.

My all-time favorite game on the NES. I remember looking at the box art, anticipating being taken to this tropical nautical setting. It was digital magic.

This was the first game I asked for back when I was a wee lad, all I had to go off of was the cartridge image and picked it because I loved tropical theming at the time. I never made it past Chapter 4 because I was missing the code clue from the manual.

One of the NES games my father gave me for one of my birthday when my parents just got divorced. Startropics have a big place in my heart ! Steve's letter, the mama dolphin, that goddamn Chapter 3 that doesn't want to end...I love em all even if some gave me frustration (that instant death of that fire cavern in Chapter 3 you showed gave me PTSDs lol) Awesome video (as always), keep em rocking !

I rented it and played several hours trying to figure out that stupid Do Ra Me musical code AND then never knew the 1776 code because it was a rental at blockbuster!!!!

My sister was not a gamer, she saw the ads and asked if i would be getting this game. I said no I wasnt interested in it. She asked our parents for this game, played it on my nes until she beat it said it was mine now and never played another game after. When I played I was surprised to find it was one of the best games I owned.

It feels like the delay was supposed to help you change directions without moving but ended up more as a hindrance. Being able to change the character's direction and attack while you were moving was an interesting quirk that happened as a result, but it doesn't really save it from feeling so janky.

I loved Startropics. It had the high seas, submarines, aliens, dolphins, parrots, and the gameplay was like Zelda meets Goonies II with some Dragon Warrior thrown in for the overworld sections.

I love StarTropics! Over time it has risen through the ranks, so-to-speak, as one of my favorite NES games. There really was nothing quite like it; I'll never forget that dungeon theme.. or the first time I fell for the incredibly mean trap in that first 'secret' area. The sequel is also quite fun, but making it more action-oriented did take away a bit of the charm of the original. Thanks for the video!

23:27 I agreed with Punch Out/Mike Tyson Punch Out for the nes being on this list because it took me months to beat Mr.Dream/Mike Tyson,and today I was finally able to beat him,yet I beat him barely by choice

The Battle of Olympus is such a great game. Very tough, but absolute stunning. The graphics, the music and the story is a wonderful combination. 11:59 This is Phthia.

StarTropics is one of my all time favorite games for the NES. The first 6 chapters are great. Chapters 7 and 8 are really challenging and caused some bad words coming out of my mouth.

I was very busy when this game was released with senior year of HS. Didn't play it until a few years ago. I did like the game. I remember the video game magazine ads for this game.

Startropics was a game i tried as an adult, and its probably a top 5 NES game for me. Love the music and graphics. I mostly didn't use a guide, and dropped it at the final dungeon. Its definitely an imperfect game. I actually liked the restricted movement system, I found it less fun to play the sequel for that reason Funnily enough, I would love if it was an rpg with lots of reason to backtrack. I think itd be different.

No mention of the insane last level.

@Hungry Goriya Due to a variety of reasons, I think I was only able to catch a single one of your StarTropics livestreams, and apart from that I haven't seen this game anywhere else. Despite that, some of the tunes were stuck in my head to this day (especially the dungeon music), and it was only watching this video now that reminded me which game they were from! And it was really lovely to see those clips from your home videos too, what a nice inclusion. 💜

StarTropics and its sequel are games that should be experienced by everyone who loved the NES...and Zoda's Revenge is even better than the original.
