Last time I bought egg rolls at a restaurant, they charged me a dollar packing charge for take out....per item. Never did take out there again! Thank you for the reviews! :)
It’s so refreshing to hear someone say “I love vinegar!” Usually when I say that people just give me this blank stare. But I can’t hide it anymore, I need to let our love be free: I LOVE VINEGAR!!!!
I'm a Southerner, and greatly dislike vinegar.... except I really love "Vinegar&Salt" potatochips! Bought a bag by mistake once from a machine, couldn't admit to my friends I hated them and pushed through the bag. I developed a liking for them! 😅 And, I love sweet tea. A certain late Aunt (Dad's younger sister) made the BEST sweet tea. 😊
I hope you're planning to continue testing frozen egg rolls from a variety of brands. Your old friends at what is now Dollar and a Quarter Tree sells my favorites, that come in beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, lobster and veggie flavors. One truly huge egg roll per package, and there is a packet of sweet and sour sauce inside the wrapper, though if you're really in an egg roll kind of mood you probably have bottles of appropriate sauces already on hand. Another place that's kind of a surprise is Jack in the Box. They have egg rolls mainly as a side to go with their teriyaki chicken bowl in place of fries, but you can also order them independently. Not quite as big as their dollar store counterparts (and only one variety), they're still substantial in size with plenty of meat as the second ingredient (cabbage will invariably be the #1 entry on the list of ingredients). And you can have fun with the pricing math too; a pack of three actually costs less than buying two individual ones.
The Kahiki was a famous iconic Polynesian-style "Tiki" restaurant for several decades here in Columbus. We often went there for special occasions. The atmosphere alone was much of the attraction, but their food was considered some of the best in town. Unfortunately, they closed almost twenty years ago, but they kept selling their famous egg rolls, which many people regularly ordered for carry-out. Now they're just selling frozen food. I tried their egg rolls just out of sentimentality a few years ago and found them to be the very best frozen egg rolls I had ever had. Of course, they were even better when you could get them fresh, served in that giant longhouse, surrounded by parrots and palm trees, with the occasional thunderstorm presented on the other side of a window by your table.
I really like the Pagoda pork egg rolls although they have really gone up in price. It's like $9 for a pack of 8 which I guess isn't relatively bad but they used to about $6
i believe the "Chicken Like Flavor" is that they used powdered chicken broth as part of the seasoning to the mixture, which is a common practice in a lot of Asian dishes.
I've had the veggie version of these Rockin' Rolls and loved them. Edamame is a thing. I rarely seek it out on its own, but I don't mind it if it's part of another dish.
Edamame makes sense as a protein source for the vegetarian version. But on their own I don't love them. Before I had an air fryer I used to rumple up some foil and bake them in the oven on top of the foil. Always came out crispy.
I feel the same way about edamame. Everything that used to have green garden peas seems to have edamame again these days. The texture is just weird unless you are eating them as a snack all by themselves out of the pod.
I loved the Kahiki. I miss it terribly. Did you ever go to their Sunday brunch/lunch buffet? It was amazing. They had a whole suckling pig there, plus several different dishes to choose from, including a HUGE bowl of peel & eat shrimp. And from eating dinners there, I still have a few of the skull and tiki glasses that their drinks came in. As for the frozen egg rolls? They suck. They don't even come close to egg rolls served in Chinese restaurants, especially the egg rolls from Ding Ho or China/Golden Phoenix. People come from out of town to buy those egg rolls by the sack.
Just went for lunch with my grandparents, 80’s through early 90’s. Was probably barely a teenager the last time I was there. Always took the longest route possible through all the rooms on the way back from the bathroom, with extra time in that fireplace banquet room with the glowing eyes. I always liked nostalgia from the ww2 generation, and it was definitely that.
@@tonyx3768 It was definitely an amazing experience. My parents used to go there for a night out when my sister and I were kids. Luckily I got to enjoy it as well.
A Vietnamese co-worker used to make vegetarian eggrolls we could order for $1 each. This was over 15 years ago. I like egg rolls from the Chinese buffet near me. Maybe I'll try these sometime.
Wow, one day after asking the audience to vote on 0-5 or 0-10 rating system and we have the vote results in action the next day. I love democracy when it works efficiently like this! Also glad you went back to the 0-10 system. I think it gives you a wider scale to chose from. Thanks!
I agree with you on edamame. I don’t hate it but I don’t seek it out. Egg rolls look pretty good. If I find them I will try but I would prefer pork or shrimp.
As someone who’s had plenty of friends work in restaurants, I can tell you, the $1 frozen egg rolls and the ones you get at the restaurants are often the same.
Sadly this brand is not available here in Canada. We can get exactly _one_ brand of frozen egg rolls, and they are just not very tasty. My gold standard for egg rolls is still the Chinese restaurant down the street from my Grandparents' house. Sadly, it closed almost 40 years ago. No restaurant or frozen product comes close.
Your cooking is so good, even the fire alarm is cheering you! 😜 Just kidding. My next investment will be an air fryer. I have no problems with dirt unless it is my dirt (I live alone). I was confused about the name of these things. Here we call them “Frühlingsrolle” (german) which would translate into “spring roll” (spring for the season, not a technical device). The two varieties you presented are the most common. Vegetarian and chicken. Another great review. Thanks a bunch and have a nice Sunday! 🫶
Hello. Here in the U.S. "spring rolls" have an outer wrapper that is smoother in appearance and lighter in color. I suggest doing a Google Image Search for "spring rolls" to see some photos. Also, a Google Search on the difference between "egg" and "spring" rolls stated, "Spring rolls are wrapped in thin flour wrappers or rice wrappers, while egg rolls are wrapped in a thicker, noticeably crispier wrapper that’s been dipped in egg for richness." Apparently spring rolls are traditionally Chinese and what we call egg rolls are believed to have been invented in New York City's Chinatown restaurants in the 1930's. 🙂 I think pork egg rolls might be the most common here. By the way, I have German heritage from both my mother's and father's families. 😉
@@brenspin cheers from GOG! 🫶 Well, if you order an “egg roll” here it is by no means crispy. It is rather an omelette wrapping for something. We have a huge influence of muslim culture who do not eat pork due to religious reasons. Pork is common here (even raw minced pork - “Mett”) but not a top seller for mass products so it is nearly unavailable… Beste Grüße! 💯🫶
Some of the best rolls I've ever had were those Original Pizza Logs that I can only seem to find at the store on special occasions. Has anyone else heard of these/eaten them? They're so good. I can't recall the name of the company, but I do remember it being veteran-owned.
For most items that are usually deep fried, I spray a small amount of veg oil on them and then toss them in in the air fryer. Except chicken wings, they only go in the deep fryer.
I agree with you about the hot mustard over the sweet and sour sauce. I don't know why it's so hard to get good hot mustard anymore, but at home, I get the S&B Oriental hot mustard powder. That stuff rocks your sinuses big time!
I get the frozen "MINH" brand pork egg rolls at Sam's club. Absolutely Delicious. Large (long). And air-fry em. Come out crispy outside n soft inside. No sauce in box. $9.88 for a box of 16 ( .62 cents ea.) Then make my own sweet n sour Orange sauce easy peasy.
I think we must have been raised eating the same sort of food...our tastes seem very similar. I also feel that most sweet and sour sauce are weak on the 'sour' aspect, so this sound really good to me. Really enjoy this channel.
Wow, Larry, you're really pumping out these videos lately. You think your new diet might have something to do with it? Just curious. Either, great job 👍🏼

I just spent 30 minutes checking my 4 alarms/changing batteries to only THEN continue watching the video and to hear it was his smoke alarm LMAO
As a Chinese guy, I’m a pretty big fan of Edamame in my diet. Shelling them is actually fun for me, and they’re pretty good texture contrast in say, a fried rice.

This is a long shot, but maybe someone here can remember this. Something like 20 years ago there was this chicken on a stick frozen food item at the grocery store. It was ground chicken, pretty much formed into a long rectangle, battered and fried. I have been looking for them for so long or some equivalent but I could never find anything, even back then when it disappeared. The company has probably been gone for 18 years or something. lol
