As a Brit? We didn’t have Pork and Beans as such. What we did have were tins of Beans with tiny wee sausages in them. And I’ll still enjoy of such now and again, on toast, as is tradition. As for Chicken? I dimly remember trips on the train down to Oxford to visit Great Granny Rhonda. And we’d usually have Marks and Spencer’s cold rotisserie chicken to chow down on. Given GG Rhonda, Granny Robinson and Mumsie are no longer with us? That’s a curiously special memory for me.

No disrespect to heinz "tinned" beans but our new england baked beans, canned or not, just do it for me. On brown bread or toast, if you can find B&M baked beans i would try them friend. Made with love from across the pond, they are good with salt pork or sausages. I can get a local made Banger style sausage and they are great with B&M

American pork and beans are so different to Heinz beans. I always took the bit of pork out but they’re made with big brown Southern beans and brown sugar and are very very tasty.
I can’t eat Heinz now I’m home, they taste too watery, the recipe has changed a lot, and I definitely won’t pay £1.50 for a tin of beans and sausage!
I guess the closest we have here, in a can are the Crosse & Blackwell barbecue beans which I do occasionally buy. It’s so easy to make a pan of beans, and so cheap, that I make my own and put them in airtight mason jars. I also make pea and ham soup all winter long.
Have a go at this recipe and I’ll bet that you don’t pay silly money for Heinz again. There was no need for them to hike up the price the way they did, it was just greed.
      Enjoy the beans.

It was great and we didn’t think a thing about eating at the roadside rest stops! If lucky there was a public toilet ( usually kinda gross). Beans is one of the best recipes for any amount of $$, right there with vegetable stew & dumplings. Most of your ingredients go by how much you want to spend or time you take as well. Heck if times are tough you can add more water and some more seasoning and add rice and have bean soup too. Oh and you can throw the jalapeno in the oven or roasted on a gas stove top to add more flavour too.

I remember all those things from 70's & 80's road trips. We even brought along charcoal for those roadside picnic areas that had grills cemented into the ground. I'm pretty unbiased on the beanie weenie vs pork n beans front and have no preference of one over the others. My mom made homemade bbq pork & beans or chopped up hot dogs & beans pretty often while I was growing up. As a kid I sorted (and shelled) through a hell of a lot of beans and like you haven't ever found a rock in what I've either cooked or helped cook but I have found rocks in beans in a couple restaurants over the years, which is just one reason I avoid most restaurants nowadays.

I much prefer the overnight soak. I think the texture and flavor is slightly better, and honestly it's less work with just a little more planning required.
Also the genius of homemade pork and beans is you get a crap ton of protein and minerals for very cheap. People will say the beans are poor in methionine and that's why you need rice or wheat, but that's what the pork has tons of! I'd rather double my bean intake than eat some white rice, because beans both have more flavor and more nutrients than rice. The protein per dollar and calories per dollar of beans is unrivaled.

We always had Bush's Baked Beans with hot dogs added. Beanie Weenie is softer with a higher fat content than most hotdogs.

Ma'am. With all due respect to your husband, if he isn't preparing or cooking it, tell his ass to eat it and be happy he has someone who cares enough to make it for him. Having said that, the premade beanie weinies are superior. Lol

Yeah my grandparents and I in the '70s and '80s would eat it roadside areas with a picnic table. We'd always have three bean salad some kind of a chicken salad sandwich or egg salad sandwich. We always ate well and we didn't eat it fast food places because back then they didn't exist.

You're right about wasting money on one time use ingredients specific to one recipe. I've bought too many spices and other ingredients I've had to toss because they sat around for way too long.

Some of your struggle recipes i would never make, for many reasons. But this one i ate several times as a kid and have made it as an adult struggling. Healthy and super cheap. In my neck of the woods it was smoked ham hocks as we dont have neckbones at the stores up here.

Beanee weenees are considered bachelor chow at my house. Pork and beans runs a close second. Instead of Van Camps tho I prefer Bush's beans. I guess that makes me a Bush man.😅

Wife and I both grew up on stuff like you make in these videos and even now that I am making decent money we still go to these a lot regardless just because they have become comfort meals to us. Our favorite times are around the holidays like now, because after the holidays turkeys and ham's usually go on sale so we will spend the money and get one or two of each and stash em in the freezer. Cook em up and make a couple dozen meals out of em (or my favorite when my wife takes 2/3rds of a turkey and makes 2-3 dozen single turkey pot pies out of em from scratch. So tasty!)
If you have the money, invest while you can in a big freezer, a vacuum sealer and a bunch of bags. Can pre-make a lot of single serve meals and freeze them down and they will last a while. Just had a pot pie my wife made (unbaked just put together and frozen) 6 months ago and it was as if it was made that day still because of being vacuum sealed and frozen.

We didn't eat canned baked beans often growing up but when mom did have them it was always Van Camp's. Mom usually made her own in a baked bean crock, she used smoked hocks (yum) and her own recipe for seasoning the sauce in the beans. There are still a couple good brands out there but I prefer to make my own, we always have a good supply of dry beans (all kinds) on hand. The only time we had beans with with weenies is if mom boiled up some dogs and brother and I would cut them up and put them in our baked beans. Now you made me hungry for baked beans :)

Snuck a can of beenie weenies into the cart last weekend shopping with my wife. Objectively not good but they invoke memories. Fantastic recipe. I like to smoke the beans themselves while I have a pork shoulder going, place them under the shoulder itself around the time the fat really starts rendering.

At this time of year, my soup kitchen would always have 8-10 smoked hams I would slice up and give out. The volunteers would get in line for the smoked ham bone we couldn't give away-to take home for soup.
