To the people who are criticizing those who spoke out during the meeting and the manner in which they did: this appears to be your first time watching a select board meeting. You really need to know the context and the background to fully understand what’s happening here. Many of us have been watching these weekly meetings (thanks to Mike @ The Young Jurks). This has been going on for over a year and the select board and the chief of police have essentially dismissed, disregarded and ignored the citizen’s concerns. Some of the people who spoke up have received threats in the past and probably continue to receive threats (courtesy of the Alberts). They are fed up.
That may be true and is good to know. However, my comments have to do with life experience and what does and doesn’t work. Can I understand the feelings? Absolutely. Do I think it’s a good idea even when I am the erring party? NO. But this is the legacy of abuse, corruption and neglect. We see it within ethnic/racial groups that have been abused for centuries. Yet, the Bible will be proved true when it says that ‘a mild tongue can break a bone’. (Proverbs 25:15)
I hope the people of Canton stand strong!!💪🏻

I was totally unaware that Albert was in a position of power in Canton. This all makes so much more sense now.
To clarify, this is the brother of Brian Albert, where JOK was found.
And he hid that he is a convicted felon when he ran for that position.

@@MsMarple that crime they are trying to say Karen did, a DUI that resulted in bodily injury, well many of these players actually have done that. When Chris was young he crashed a guy, while drunk and left the scene. I read the other day an article from that time that said there was a 30+ hr manhunt to find him. The guy died, was a student from Europe and the other person in the car was a woman that was hurt. The woman survived because of another civilian, that guy that saved the lady was with TB one of the last days of the trial. For what I’ve read, he only did 6 months, but they want Karen in prison for life.

When you pay taxes in a town and you see how the local government is working...it creates some passion to say the least.
When you see innocent people getting arrested, like Turtleboy and Read, while police families have no limits, I'd be frightened wondering when I or someone I love was going to be their next scapegoat

Canton SB Meeting makes for some amazing entertainment. The SB seems to be untouchable. The CPD and SB are brazen AF.
You should check out last week's, it was bonkers. Camera/feed stopped working a lot when ppl talked about issues with police. I've even read through old meeting minutes online. Def invested

During my 43 year career as an attorney, I sat through literally hundreds of these public comment sessions. Some speakers tend to be civic leaders or aspiring politicians who try to improve their "brand" and get themselves on TV. But not these citizens. They are well intentioned, passionate, focused and exercised self-control. It is not uncommon for speakers to exceed the limit, but they are oftentimes given 30 additional seconds to wrap up.
It never comes across well when an elected official try to have a citizen removed from a public meeting. Elected officials often see themselves as "under siege" by citizens rather than realize that they are accountable to the public.

He's great on the law, awesome insights. But never been very good at reading people. (Been a channel fan for years) He takes people's surface actions and words at face value. But in Court, I'll take the unperceptive legal mind every day.

People get so worked up about partisan politics on the federal level. The LOCAL government is what actually has the biggest impact on the daily lives of citizens. We all need to pay more attention and be more involved in what happens locally. That's where the real changes get started.
Chris Albert's apology, to me, means nothing. What we saw was the typical bullying he and his family probably has gotten away with for years. This is a core problem of what we saw through the KR case.
They were bullied by turtle boy. It would be best for them not to react because that just pulls them into the gutter with turtle boy. But they were working and minding their business until turtle boy went to their place of employment after harassing them and their children for 2 years

I believe, when you consider what the people of Canton have been facing, what they are facing, the board really should offer some grace when it comes to time limits. Had they allowed them to have their say, finish their comments without interrupting, it might well have stopped this from happening.
Instead they confirm the issues raised are legitimate. They believe themselves to be better than the people of Canton.

It’s definitely a huge problem that the select board only enforces its rules when the rules limit public expression but it’s a big free for all where they simply ignore the rules that apply to THEM.

Watched the entire meeting and can see why the citizens are so frustrated! Every single item was voted on without discussion and the chairman announced 4-0 after every vote! Hopefully the national attention this has garnered will lead to change.

The lady, Miss O’Donnell, is one of many who have been brutalized and bullied by the cops in the town and the families and friends of the McAlberts. She has been threatened on so many levels, and she’s been coming to these meetings for the last several months discussing the threats and I’ve never seen her act this way. I think she’s at her breaking point as well as Rita who spoke after her. They are very passionate and afraid for their town and continue the fight even though they’ve been threatened and bullied. Also, many of the people sitting in the chairs are there to support Chris and that’s why they’re there, so this meeting came to blows. Rita refers to this at the end of her statement.
She was recently pulled over and harassed for no reason.

I spent four years as a county Councillor (similar to selectman). When you are an elected official, there is no ‘off duty’ time. You represent your community at all times. One of the reasons I didn’t run again.

Wow, the rulings were not kidding when they said that the community has been divided and peoples safety is really in danger.
This wasn't even that bad a meeting. Watch the last several meetings. Yesterday it seems like they filled the room with Albert supporters so the rest of the town couldn't be there.
One week an elderly lady started crying saying that she's been there for generations and speaking out only causes her adult to get followed by cops & grandkids to be cut from sports teams & school functions because Alberts & McCabes coach the sports, work in the schools, are on the police force and on and on and on.
She broke my heart when she stood there and cried "i want to get back to the town I loved" 😢💔

When JM sat on the stand and acted like she was upset about all the attention and drama, it was clear she was even lying about that. She loves this and I’m sure the rest of her family does as well.
I was shocked when the woman told of a woman whose death had been ruled a suicide and it has now changed to a homicide.
How could anyone feel secure in a town where you don’t even know if you or your loved ones are found dead that they will properly investigate the possibility that you were murdered. Especially if you aren’t one of the affluent members of the city.

The only remedy is to remove Mr. Albert from his position. There is far too much happening to allow a verbal apology to be sufficient. We all know he didn’t mean it and it is a mere formality. The trust is lost.

I read in other comments that after that apology he has already resumed his poor behavior against someone who would have been a paying customer who came into his pizza shop. I don't know how true that it, but if he did berate and curse at someone who would have been a customer, I don't think his business will continue to thrive. KR supporters will quit going there. Maybe someone else should open a new, cheaper pizza place across the street.

Wow Peter I am so glad you are with us on the right side of history here. It reminds me of what you said about Yanetti that he just makes you like him "that Yanetti" you said with a smile. I'm thinking "that Peter" with a smile on my face. It's exciting to see these things happening in our country but I am scared too because the problems in Canton and many other places are not supposed to be happening here. We are in real peril in this country and if we don't turn things around with regards to corruption and injustice we could lose it all. The stakes couldn't be higher in this moment. Great video!

I lived in the heart of Boston 14 years, in beacon hill and I attended many community meetings and town board meetings. I assure you the people of MA will not let this small town government be corrupt, I’m positive many people will be replaced and many more will be reprimanded in public if possible. This is a state where direct representation is taken very seriously and where the average citizen is highly educated, as their public education system is the best in the nation. So, rest assured they will not stop until they clean house in Canton and all the surrounding areas. These are true pilgrim descendants, they are not afraid of anything and will fight until the end!

The way their town meeting is so dismissive to the citizens, that timer, no dialogue… that needs to change. Only way to force accountability is to force those on board to answer these questions! They receive documents they deny receiving, or simply don’t respond to. That’s outrageous!
Completely agree. Similarly, I couldn't help but notice that when applause suddenly broke out in response to Kevin Albert's suspension (something rarely seen in response to a Canton selectman statement), it took a fraction of a second for him to demand "be quiet". Like jesus, do these selectmen hate public comment so much that they can't even take a second of applause?
Even if some residents think KR is guilty, the pending lawsuits which have the police actions in the crosshairs should give them pause!!

Actions speak louder than words.. I am not a citizen of Canton, but clearly their citizens are fed up. It seems to me that the little action taken, much too little too late, and the statement of "Oh I'll behave now." are mere actions to distract from the cancer that is happening. Once Canton is out of the public eye, it'll be back to business as usual...

Thank you for covering this. I have told many people that are watching the Read trial that they should watch these meetings because the issues in Canton are SO MUCH bigger than Karen Read.
I’m happy that you played the Selection Board excerpts. I live in a small town in Massachusetts. I have been overwhelmed at the power dynamics between the police departments and the citizens. I feel helpless, even though I did what I could to speak out about the injustices here. The police act like kings in power. It needs to change. Karen Read’s trial is bringing to light the corruption that I have seen firsthand.

These people are making a great case, not only to their town, but other towns should listen carefully to help keep the public servants accountable.
It sounds like Canton is having some serious issues with their police and board acting inappropriately. It is hard to be objective in the Karen Reed trial and makes my heart hurt both for John O’Keefe and his family.
Of course they kick out the woman who is being badgered by someone else in the gallery (who is a McAlbert). She responds and they throw her out. Laughable. Pretty obvious whats going on there.

Wait Chris Albert was only “punished” to 6th months (not sure probation or jail time) by Judge Bev’s brother in 1994 where a foreign exchange student was killed in an “accident”. How was she not recused for conflict of interest in the Read trial?

I had an HOA once that For the life of me couldn’t figure out what we were paying for. We weren’t a gated community there were no common areas like parks or grass areas, there were no areas that required landscaping to be used, never once did I ever see any street cleaning come through. We were paying 60 a month as shake down money. The prior house owned was 90 a quarter but we had a bunch of common areas so at least they were doing work. HOA’s are worse than organized crime syndicates.
Question for you since I’m unfamiliar: are HOA’s required to do an annual report/audit showing expenditures against fees received?

The first thing I will say is that the people in this town town do not trust their government officials. When it gets to the point that citizens are challenging local officials the problems have been there for a long time. The police department needs new leadership, as does the town's government officials. Very enlightening.

I’m really wondering why the foreman wouldn’t communicate it if the jury was unanimous on 2 of the 3 charges. The statement made it sound like they were hopeless deadlocked on all 3.

Could be they thought they had to be unanimous on all counts. The jurors look to the judge for direction. She also rushed them in before the attorneys could ask anything and rushed the jurors out just as quick.

you don't know that half of it about Chris Albert. Look into a 30 year old case where he killed Peter Berger in a hit and run accident. Judge Cannone's brother represented him in the case. This was not disclosed to the community when he ran for SB. Also, he had unpaid taxes for years. When the citizens brought it up it suddenly got paid. It goes on and on.
