- As with rosy steps the morn from the oratorio Theodora, HWV 68
by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Joyce DiDonato, mezzo-soprano
Il Pomo d'Oro
Maxim Emelyanychev, conductor
As with rosy steps the morn,
Advancing, drives the shades of night,
So from virtuous toil well-borne,
Raise Thou our hopes of endless light.
Triumphant savior, Lord of day,
Thou art the life, the light, the way!

You're welcome, dear Theo. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful weekend!
I’ve listened to Joyce singing this many, many times and she does such a magnificent job in the interpretation. As with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson she manages to make the spine tingle and the eyes become somewhat dewy. Equally, Emelyanychev is such a great musician and leader for these baroque arias. I wonder what he might have achieved with LHL…
For me Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is the gold standard in this repertoire. In fact, I have previously made a video of her singing this very aria. Like you, I am also quite enamored with DiDonato's interpretation.
@@JeffreyStivers Hi Jeffrey. You may recall that I am a baroque music lover, especially sacred and operatic vocal music. I have some good knowledge, though nowhere as good as yours. That’s why I subscribe to your channel as I’m usually sure to learn something new.
@@djperry211 Of course, I know that you are a baroque music lover and that you are knowledgeable about this music. I remember interacting with you on previous videos. Thank you for subscribing to my channel. It's always nice to hear that people appreciate the music on my channel.

One of my favorites, sung gorgeously. Thank you. I needed this tonight.
You’re welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful Jeffrey, thank you 🎼
You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Really beautiful. Embellishments are clever : restrained so not too operatic for such a faith driven aria.
I agree. I really like how she embellishes it.

Joyce Didonato is not only a wonderful singer, but also a very kind and giving person. I happy to hear that she was able to touch your soul during the isolation of COVID. Warm greetings.
Thank you! Adorable performance.
You're welcome, dearest Rosa. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@JeffreyStivers The aria is a beautiful and moving expression of faith and hope. The melody is simple and elegant, and the accompaniment is delicate and supportive. The lyrics compare the rising of the morning sun to the rising of one's hopes and aspirations. The aria is a reminder that even in the midst of darkness and despair, there is always hope for a new day. It's my favorite.
Thanks Jeffrey for this aria from one of my prefered composers.
Have a happy week.
You're welcome, Rogerio. As you likely know, Handel is a favorite of mine too, and I think this oratorio is one of his finest compositions.
Beautiful _da capo_ embellishments. Some of them almost sound like they should be "canon" :) Even the violins at the end couldn't help but join in the mood.
It is a lovely performance. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
De hecho, el otoño es la mejor época del año, en mi opinión. Esos 100 días que van de San Miguel, el 29 de septiembre hasta el 6 de enero, día de Reyes, son lo mejor del año...
Great video, dear Jeffrey! The images are awesome and this aria is caressing and gives serenity. I find Joyce Didonato's singing so delicate and elegant. Thank you for sharing this. I hope you enjoy your weekend.
You're welcome, dearest Laura. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful weekend!
¡Bonita forma de saludar al otoño...!
Indeed. Fall is also my favorite time of the year.
As an aside, we saw a semi-staged version of Tolomeo last week, so many beautiful arias that are seldom heard.
I always look forward to your posts, thank you for bringing such musical treasures to us.
You're welcome, and thank you for your kind words of support. It's always nice to hear that people enjoy the music on my channel. I saw Tolomeo at The Glimmerglass Opera Festival a few years back. Some of the arias from that opera are available on my channel.
Прекрасно!!!❤❤❤
Indeed. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I love Joyce...but there is another young mezzo that I heard singing this and it is fabulous. Listen to Sarah Coit.
I was not familiar with that singer. Thanks for the recommendation. Lovely singing.
