- “Per le porte del tormento“ from Imeneo, HWV 41
by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
Ann Hallenberg (Tirinto) & Monica Piccinini (Rosmene)
Europa Galante with Fabio Biondi, conductor
From a recording of Handel’s late opera Imeneo, given in its serenade-style 1742 Dublin version. This duet was originally from Handel’s opera Sosarme which had its premiere in 1732. This duet was apparently very popular in Handel’s day and was often extracted for concert performance.
Tirinto/Rosmene:
Per Ie porte del tormento
passan I'anime a gioir!
Sta il contento del cordoglio sul confine;
Non v’è rosa senza spine,
Né piacer senza martir.
TRANSLATION:
Through the gates of suffering
souls must pass to finally gain pleasure!
Contentment stands at the edge of grief;
There is no rose without thorns,
Nor pleasure without suffering

It is exquisitely joyful to listen to the two divas and Handel's portion of 'Per le Porte del tormento.' What a sumptuous tone, the harmonious melody and the singing synchronize into heavenly intonation to the spirit. The selection of presenting the fabulous ballet images adds a sublime dimension to this wonderful presentation.

Handel was inspired by the heavens
Beautiful Karina!
This is sung by Ann Hallenberg & Monica Piccinini; although, I do love Karina Gauvin too.
I have a video of a Danish or Swedish production of Handel's "Partenope" where this duet is inserted towards the very end of the opera where all the complications of the twisted plot are sorted out and peace and love commence to reign -it fits perfectly though I don't think it was in the original "Partenope."
I have that DVD too. That’s where I first discovered Tuva Semmingsen. This duet was added to that production of Partenope. It’s actually originally from Sosarme; Handel reused it in Imeneo.
@@JeffreyStivers Yes that production was absolute magic and shows you how baroque opera can be done to the maximum effect without elaborate staging-: by people wearing jeans.I like to compare this production with a Spanish production of Leonardo Vinci's "Partenope" -the first version of the story I think to be made into an opera -where everything is done with elaborate costumes and sets and with stylized movements-both a wonderful in their own particular way.I think Sonja Prina sang the title role in this production.
Que magnifique!?!?
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@JeffreyStivers Oui merci beaucoup.
You're welcome.
30-10-2016 En la armonía de Platón ya estaba 'per se' el panteísmo que vendría de la mano George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) y gobierna, afortunadamente, el universo.
how stunning, where can I get these amazing photos?
These photos are part of the NYC Dance Project. I included a link in the video description.
This duet is originally from “Sosarme”, but it was later re-used in “Imeneo”. While I love their singing, I find this tempo choice a bit to sluggish.
"Everything is beautiful at the Ballet,". Ann Hallenberg's mellow contralto is a lovely contrast with the more edgy soprano.
Indeed. I'm glad you enjoyed this.
Oddio, ascoltate quell'attacco! Nemmeno la prima sillaba la possono cantare bene?
I've commented some time ago Jeffrey but...... Geeeeez mate! What about this :)
:) ♥
+Jadwiga Teresa Stępień I'm glad you enjoyed it.

VERY ARTIFICIAL.

*_Elizabeth S._*
*_You said it all -- Sister !_*
Lovely recording! I'm confused by the ballet pics although they're nice photos.
+Peggy Murray I'm glad you enjoyed the music. I selected these images which often depict couples, because I felt they could represent the lovers Tirinto & Rosmene who sing this duet in the opera. Additionally, I enjoy seeing ballet dancers performing with Handel's music, so it's not hard for me to imagine them actually dancing during the music in the video.
I use various types of art and photography in the videos I make for my CZcams channel. Basically, I found these images very evocative and wanted to use them in a video, and I thought they were a lovely pairing with this duet. I hope that helps you understand why I chose them.
+Jeffrey Stivers Ah, interesting! I'm a former ballet dancer, but now do Baroque and other historical dance. Handel IS wonderful to dance to, and some great choreographers during and since his time have recognized this!
+Peggy Murray Thanks for the post!
+Peggy Murray You're welcome, and thank you for your comments.
+Peggy Murray I assume you're familiar with Mark Morris’ staging of Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. That's actually what I had a mind when I made this video. I just rewatched my DVD after our discussing how well Handel's music works with dancers. If anyone ever doubted that, they'd need only watch this captivating performance.
air magnifique et superbement servi..mais c'est duetto d'Elmira et de Sosarme à la scène 8 de l'acte 2
Yes, Handel reused this duet, originally from Sosarme, in Imeneo. I pointed that out in the video description.
Thanks a lot Jeffrey. I love Ann Hallenberg
You're welcome. I absolutely adore Ann Hallenberg, and you'll notice she is well represented on my CZcams channel.
Hello Jeffrey ! Vous aimez sans doute les belles voix de Contreténor......Avez-vous écouté votre compatriote David Daniels
chanter "Va Tacito e nascosto" ?....une merveille !....
+Claude Dumont Yes. I have that on CD, and I've heard him sing it live at the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago Lyric, both in David McVicar's wonderful production from Glyndebourne.
