CITV continuity clips, promos and ads (2001)

  • Lots and lots of CITV clips and ads, all from the same tape, the majority of which are from March 2001. Presenters are Danielle Nicholls, Stephen Mulhern, and that Arthur Darvill bloke off of Doctor Who (a.k.a. Tom), but get this: they were running a contest for a new CITV presenter! If I'd known, I'd have been well up for that at the time, and the fact that I would have been rubbish wouldn't have been enough to stop me. The quaintness of submitting your audition on VHS isn't lost on me, either.
    [EDIT: Despite all being together and in this order on the tape, it seems that we jump forward from March to June - possibly Monday 4th - around the 26:07 mark. Many thanks to @TrevorDistance, @KyleJBAwesomeness-OfficialChan and @David315842 in the comments for helping to get to the bottom of this.]
    Anyway, there are plenty of TellyTots links around episodes of The Little Grey Rabbit, complete with simple counting or colour-matching games, plus CITV promos for brand new shows Petswap and Twister, along with talk of Pokemon, Scooby-Doo, and Brilliant Creatures. Nigel Mitchell nearly makes an appearance as a guest, and there's a phone-in competition to identify the cartoon character from the clues.
    As for the ads, Ronald McDonald himself pops up a fair bit in what was getting close to his last hurrah here in the UK, Disney are flogging their sequel to Lady and the Tramp, the marketing for Rowntree's Bursting Bugs is positively horrific, Jammie Dodgers are apparently setting up a truly bizarre-looking campaign, and much, much more for you to enjoy.
    Huge thanks to @David315842 for sending me this tape.
    (If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)

    So many memories, those Rowntrees bursting bugs were amazing. I was 9 in 2001 so i remember the most from this era, in my eyes the late 90s and early 00s were the golden age of CITV. The channel wasn't afraid of taking risks, so many quirky programs were being made during this time, and the ads are just the cherry on top. When would get a 2D animated advert for Charmin toilet roll in 2024?!

  • @JHarper08
    @JHarper08 Před měsícem +4

    Ah 2001, the year CITV's budget cuts were starting to take effect (25% of it at least), also the year ITV proposed the idea of a CITV Channel which would not happen for another 5 years. Funny to see where the presenters are now, Stephen Mulhern does DOI with Holly (feels like an MOM reunion), Danielle Nicholls is on TalkTV of all places, and Arthur "Tom" Darvill is a stage actor.

    • @David315842
      @David315842 Před měsícem +1

      I thought that the budget for the show at the time was pretty much the same as it was since 1998, maybe even more so, but that's only going by the size of their large TV monitor and main studio, which they would have up till 2003 at least. :)

    • @VideotapeFTW

    I think it was 2 almost 3 weeks by the looks of it. :D Despite the randomness of it all I'm glad that you enjoyed the ads and continuity. regardless of what Mulhern said I doubt that job was a permanent one, I think ITV would have had some stern words thrown at them by certain Government departments. It's more likely it was a temporary one, under close supervision of course. yes, the incomplete quest for the Rowntree. The Bursting Bugs ad was not the last one, but it was fast approaching the end to a quest that was never completed by Rowntree. I had almost forgotten about those 'We do Ron' adverts for McDonald's that were doing the rounds at this time. As you said, these were the last few we see, before they retired him from advertisements etc.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  Před měsícem +2

      Oh, I definitely always enjoy these types of clips, so thanks for recording them! Some decent ads as always, but it was the continuity and promos that I liked best.
      I've just looked it up, and CITV had three new presenters start in September 2001 - I wonder whether these submissions were at least part of that audition process. It seems they really were looking for new presenters at the time, anyway.

      @@VideotapeFTW I remember they got a new female presenter and she joined Tom, you may see her in other tapes I sent I'm not sure, but yeah by 2002, I think the lineup had changed to the point where Stephen and Danielle were no longer there, but someone else. The promos and continuity were very energetic and just full of fun, but then they had to be for their target audience. :) It sure was nostalgic seeing these again, even for me. :)

  • @KyleJBAwesomeness-OfficialChan

    This continuity continuity compilation is actually from May-June 2001 because of the new season of Brilliant Creatures and the new host audition search with Leah Charles, David Leon and Leigh Morrison joining the host roster the following September that year

    • @David315842
      @David315842 Před měsícem +2

      No, it isn't. Check the Jammie Dodgers ads at 11:20 and at 20:46, both of them have the end date for their competition being March 31st. The Brilliant Creatures episode may have also likely been a repeat. They may have said that it was a 'new series' since it replaced a pre-existing show in that time slot, even though the episode may have been a repeat, sometimes they cheat that way. The CITV search officially began at this point and would have taken months to sort out the finalists. By a good six months it may seem, if the finalists joined in by September.

    • @TrevorDistance
      @TrevorDistance Před měsícem +1

      @@David315842I think you're both right, in fact. From the start of the recording to 26:07, it's definitely clips of assorted March dates. But after that point the tape does appear to skip on to just one day from early June (specifically the 4th I believe).
      CITV absolutely did sometimes try to pass off repeats as new episodes (I remember being a bit cheesed off at them doing it increasingly when the budget cuts started to pile up!), but having cross-referenced a few old ITV schedules and the BFI's listings, both do indicate that only wholly new episodes of Brilliant Creatures were being shown around that time, with no reruns just prior to them either.
      (Plus Stephen Mulhern there in the promo clips shown specifically dates things too, as he hadn't been involved in any of the previous series of it to the best of my knowledge?)

      @David315842 Před měsícem +1

      @@TrevorDistance I'm the one who supplied the tape, so it made more sense if the broadcasts were closer together then that, however, offhand I can't remember if I may have perhaps gone back and used the rest of a tape up after I started recording. Sometimes the tapes would just have a single program on it through various dates of broadcasts, while others it can be random stuff. Though it is possible that I may have saw that I have some space left on one tape and decided to use it about a month or two later from when I first started to use it. In that case Trevor, fair enough and well played. :)

      A couple of other points for consideration:
      - That McDonald's ad appears at both 2:30 and 31:24.
      - When was Digimon: The Movie released? 33:59
      Just to confirm that these clips are all from the same tape, in the order they appeared.

    • @David315842
      @David315842 Před měsícem +1

      @@VideotapeFTW That's easy. The McDonald's ad you're talking about was a generic one, not a limited happy meal ad. Those Ronald McDonald ads actually played quite often throughout 2001 as I recall. Theatrically Digimon: The Movie came out in late 2000, so the DVD release was four to six months later, I recall it being available since around April/May I believe, but they still would be advertising it one or two months after its initial release. As I said I could have used this video to record stuff at any time, perhaps finding out that there was tape left over that I hadn't recorded on yet. I think that did happen a couple of times.
