I agree with the lieutenant colonel, war are an art and combining the smartness, technology and well trained soldiers. Drones used in a smart way can spare possible injuries of soldiers. Mariupol are one example of smartness, but also the azov regiment showing new ways of bringing war to a new level.

Nothing has ever been as deadly as the modern battlefield. With these drones, self correcting rifle scopes, and a.i. is now making life and death decisions. It really is just a killing field.
Modern battlefields have become absurdly lethal. We've gone from soldiers walking forward shoulder to shoulder, to masses going over the top, to armoured fists followed by mechanized infantry... to small squads scrabbling forward under the cover of drones. Units can't concentrate for massed attacks because they'll just get wiped out. We're heading towards 2-man squads operating hundreds of meters apart from other squads, likely burrowing in the earth as best they can.
Until that is, AI gets good enough... all bets are off when we get to that point. That future is unknowable. Maybe we'll get lucky and the AI will tell us to grow up.
