When you talk about the center position for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the conversation always starts with Mike Webster. A fifth-round draft pick by the team in the 1974 NFL Draft, Webster anchored the Steelers line throughout his career.
Webster started 150 consecutive games, beginning at the end of the 1975 season and lasting until 1986, when a dislocated elbow sidelined him for four games.
Webster played 15 seasons and 200 games with the Steelers, more than any other player in team history. He spent his last two seasons (1989-90) with the Kansas City Chiefs.
He was the Steelers offensive captain for nine seasons, a strong leader off the field and the strongest player on the field, earning him the nickname "Iron Mike."
"Mike wasn't tall enough, he didn't weigh enough, but the thing he had that made the difference was he had great playing strength," said late Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Noll. "You could see it on the field. He would come off the ball with great quickness. I can remember having some films of him against I think it was UCLA, which had these huge, huge tackles. He just destroyed him. Wisconsin moved the ball up and down the field. He not only blocked well on the run, but he also pass protected well."
Webster, a member of the Steelers four Super Bowl championship teams in the 1970s, played in nine Pro Bowls, and was selected All-Pro seven times.
Webster led the way for Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, and kept quarterback Terry Bradshaw safe. It was Bradshaw who would be Webster's Hall of Fame presenter, and the two shared a special moment on the steps in Canton, Ohio.
As Bradshaw talked about a dream he had as a kid to play on a championship team, he rattled off the Steelers players that helped him achieve that. When he got to center, he spoke of Webster.

Take some small comfort in the fact that Mike Webster posthumously may have saved countless brain injuries and/or lives.
Man...Webster. A tragic tale. He lived in cars and on trains. Bradshaw and Rooney would pay for his expenses. He'd disappear for months. His wife divorced him a few months before he died. His teenage son moved in with him to take care of him. He died in 2002 of a heart attack. Tragic story. He had a rough life after football, but he is the GOAT.
Iron Mike ! Sprinting up to snap the ball. No sleeves. Freezing cold outside. Arms that looked like legs. I saw him once bench press 350 for 15 reps with his hands on the inner knurlings. A Pittsburgh guy!
I admired Mike Webster since 77,.wore the #52. Played high school football Started my Jr and Sr year. At center. Had Mike Webster sport illustrated pic hanging in my Locker #52 👍

RIP Mike Webster! Beyond his storied NFL career, most people don't know that Webster was the first former NFL player to be diagnosed Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy [CTE]. Webster has become the symbol of the head injuries in the NFL and player safety-related issues. Mike Webster's impact on the game of football goes way beyond being one of the best center's in NFL history.
Like a lot of fans, I heavily criticized the movie. Although the movie "Concussion" is not totally accurate, it did a decent job of helping the audience know more about Pittsburgh Steelers great Mike Webster. I feel bad for the Webster family. And if you ask me, Mike Webster's son is a true hero and devoted son. Mike Webster's Hall of Fame speech was a decent one. If people listened carefully, he spoke of plenty of good things that helped him become a successful Hall of Fame player. Mike recognizing influential people throughout his life on helping him become a great player was a tremendous speech in itself. It was definitely not a bad speech at all.

@thomasjust2663 💯 % agree 👍....Mike was very eloquent in his speech and without any notes, which is even harder. Also, his transition and jokes were on point. Actually, it was one of the best speeches I've heard‼️ It's so tragic what CTE can do b/c 5 years later he was dead at 50. He was only 45 here and looked more like 65.....Years of head trauma caught up to him. But, the NFL knew the risk, but did not warn players to protect their investment 💲💰....The only GOD on planet 🌍 is 💰, and everyone worships it, unfortunately 😕

In my opinion Mike Webster was the greatest center who ever played in the NFL.He also took the most physical punishment of all the Super Bowl Steelers on the football field.As a result he suffered and died from CTE. RIP Mike Webster.
Tears roll from my eyes when I think of Mike Webster and what he went through and I know guys who played in the league with him feel the same way I do RIP🙏 to mr. Webster.

Simply the Greatest Ever. Who knew he was so articulate? Webby was all business on the field, so stoic and to the point. Nothing personifies the Steelers of the Seventies than Webby, steamy lifting off him, sleeves rolled up with black electrical tape. Iron Mike, so great, so professional so determined, the beating heart of the Steelers.

Bradshaw got really emotionally in the last year or two when he was discussing CTE and Aaron Hernandez, he almost cried when he talked about the tragedy that was Mike Webster and he was touching.
I am a sports epidemiologist who focuses on neurodegenerative decline in football players (often with a focus on racial disparity), and in my studies Webster has been critical. I’ve heard so much about his life and about this speech and how much he was struggling at this point. I love Webster and I research this topic with the utmost respect and honor for each and every person I study, and I don’t want the pain and suffering mentally, an unknown consequence in his time in the NFL, that he and fellow players experience, to go in vain ❤️

If only the NFL cared about its players. Instead of treating the kids trying to escape poverty through athleticism like expendable pawns. I cannot image the hell Mike went through, I’m not a football fan or a sports one, but a psychology student. I saw a father, a fighter, and someone trying to create a better life for his family, not just a football player. It’s sad to see such a talented good hearted soul got to waste. Studying the history of brain injury and the story of “Iron Mike” was heart breaking. I’m not religious but if there was a heaven you would be there. May you finally Rest In Peace Mike.

Nah not at all… his caretakers and family didn’t want him to go up there because they knew he was struggling mentally and tried to save him from himself, it was well known he was off the tracks in the media and all, he wanted to do this to prove he was ok and capable of a speech - which he knew he didn’t. He rambled on and spoke like 10 minutes longer then his allotted time and was all over the place. People were trying to clap and support him because it was like watching a train wreck happen and not being able to stop it. Tragedy.

This is cringe. It’s unfocused rambling for 20 minutes. CTE was already showing its signs when he stood there going off on endless tangents. Professional football will be in big trouble if enough young people decide they don’t want to be like this when they’re only 40 years old.

He was closer to 50 at this point. This wasn’t too far from the end for him. His CTE was really bad at this point - he talked past his allotted time, his loved ones tried to stop him, and he was trying to prove he wasn’t as bad off as he was and it’s heart breaking because even he knew he didn’t accomplish that.
I don't know that he rambled, or he was suffering from CTE when he spoke. If you really listen, you can hear he was speaking from his heart. Truly by far and away the GREATEST Center to have ever played in the history of the NFL.
