  • Had quite a paddling adventure down the Coosa River with some extra side adventures along the way exploring the bottom of a dam, a little rock climbing, cliff jumping and of course taking on some rapids on the standup paddleboard. What a great day of adventure!!!

      I was into backpacking before kayaking. Show it! One thing kayaking lacks is you don't always get the scenic views being stuck in a valley on a river, or being constrained to the river and not being able to do much exploring.

      I'm the guy who frequents Gold Star Park (downtown Wetumpka!) on paddleboard, for a few years now.

    • @johnhall7475
      @johnhall7475 Před rokem

      I got on the water at GSP today, went upstream through Bibb Graves Bridge, beyond Coosa River Adventures etc., for an hour or so; easy return back to my car.
      I began paddleboarding here about 5 years ago, a few times a year, but haven't lived there since I was 15. I have missed a lot of "current events" obviously (!)
      Later this afternoon, I visited my SUP mentor, Mary, at Lake Jordan. According to her, there's been a recent gator encounter/sighting in the rocky area behind Coaches' Corner 😳...there's some 'surfy spots' along there that I love returning to.
      I appreciate the heads-up; I'm so obsessed with river paddleboarding that I'd kinda forgotten about *gators!*
      I'll be back there Thursday afternoon, tentatively. Please don't tell my Mom.
      Wanna demo a new board? I'll have a few with me. Anyway, thanks for your comments.
      Lake Martin/Kowaliga/Tallapoosa River is my home. Do you get to SUP here?

    That was neat to see Jordan Dam that close. Wetumpka is my hometown and I have seen that dam with almost every single gate open. It was one hell of a sight. The patch of trees at 8:12 was almost completely submerged and what you could see was being rocked and rolled by the current.

    Hey man it may be note worthy to the viewers that when your jumping from a cliff or something its a good idea to check the water, even going as far as getting in. We have a spot we jump from and it has a ledge to the right that will end a fun day real quick! Safety first then teamwork ;)

    Awesome trip Trip. Good to see you up near(ish) to me and paddling around my old stomping grounds! I cant even begin to tell you all the childhood memories I have from this particular part of this river. I used to come down this river with my Dad (who has been gone for over 20 years now) all the time. I usually go down this section 3-4 times a year and it always brings back such good memories. Shoot, back when we used to canoe it 30+ years ago, we would be the only ones on the whole river usually, and the dirt road to the launch site was basically a trail thru the woods.....you about had to have a 4x4 just to get there then. I have found a drawer full of arrowheads along the banks here, but of course back then there were no houses along this stretch of river to speak of either.... Its just really cool getting to see others enjoy this treasure that I have loved dearly for so long. 👍👍

    Thought 1. Most dams of this size also have both a visual and a very loud alarm when they are going to be releasing.
    Thought 2. Have you considered getting a whitewater helmet. NRS sells pretty cheap ones. They can help protect your head in case you fall off the paddle board during rapids.

    Trip, have you thought about adding forums to your website? I think it would be a great idea so we can share tips, adventures, and ask questions with each other. Every viewer is a local somewhere... Some know interesting things like where there's awesome stealth camping spots, the safest place to leave your vehicle overnight, a cool place that's not on any map, unique trips to give ideas, etc. I know there isn't a great deal of information out there about some places, or maybe there's places we don't even know about, largely because there isn't one good central internet site to share. Just an idea.

      thechosendude this is a good idea my dude, I would certainly visit his site more and it would be cool for sailingandsuch fans to communicate. Maybe we could start a subreddit?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety

      I certainly have thought about it and I think it would be awesome! But I never went through with it.... I don't have the time and really there are other websites already established with lots of knowledgeable people who aren't always S&S fans. I'm thinking I'd be serving the audience better to suggest a establish forum rather than starting a new one. But who knows, I could be totally wrong lol

    • @thecornmonger
      @thecornmonger Před 7 lety +3

      A reddit page would be easier to set up and less time is required

    • @cup_and_cone
      @cup_and_cone Před 7 lety

      SailingandSuch - I definitely understand your point it would take a lot of time and not everyone is a S&S subscriber. Maybe a S&S subreddit like everyone mentioned would be a lot better/easier. I just know CZcams is not the greatest for subscribers to research, share, or interact between us, LOL. I would be interested in hearing your favorite sites. Typically I just use Google search and maps, but then I end up on like websites and pages that are years old and information is out of date.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety +1

      You're right, a subreddit might be good.... I don't know what the best place for S&S'er to interact would be.... Favorite sites? I don't really do much on topic specific sites, I generally research the location on Google and go from there to Facebook Pages, Business Pages, forums, and whatever I can find.

    Fun little adventure..Nice video.
    As for the Hiking/Back packing, I'm an outdoors guy. I love the adventures of nature. Kayaking is something you have to always keep in your channel. it's why most of us are here, but I certainly don't have any issue with trying some different types of adventure into the wild. Keeps things interested. Just remember to keep kayaking. I remember last year, you went on a beach trip down off the gulf. That was fun. Use to love how you planned the trips, the storms and curve balls that nature would throw at you during your trips. The crabbing and fishing. All fun stuff.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 6 lety

      Thankya Joe! I don't think I'll ever get away from the water. That is my main draw for the outdoors, especially the beachy areas. I'm thinking mixing things up could be fun and may help get people's attention who enjoy other things outdoors (like backpacking and survival videos) and then bring them over the kayak camping side ;-) It's my thinking at least. Plus, trying new things with the channel are fun and you never know what kind of curve balls can be thrown at me no matter what I do.

      Much appreciated Henrik! Good to hear from ya. It usually doesn't get to cold here until December or January so we are good for a while longer. At least not freezing cold... Stay warm!

    Great film, thanks for sharing. How do think the SUP compares to the Kayak in the rapids? It looked pretty good to me. I think backpacking sounds fine, after all it is Sailing "and Such" which could cover a lot of different things.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks Drynet! I think it does awesome in the rapids.... It's cool to be standing and you can feel the rapids more plus it might make smaller rapids seem more intense and exciting. Glad everyone is liking the backpacking idea, can't wait!

      Thanks bud! Yep, I think it does pretty well, I'm really liking it. Spam was really good actually but most anything I eat while on an adventure seems to be good.... Haha! That museum would be interesting. I'll keep them coming bud,thanks!

    I didn't see it but was you "tethered" to the SUP ??? If you fall out the rapids could take the SUP away quickly ??

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 6 lety

      No Jack I wasn't tethered to it. I think in the rapids I would be moving along with the board. If I were tethered then I run the risk of the tether wrapping around an object which could hang up and could easily drown a person. Never use a tether in running water.

    How does your SUP do in shallow water (ankle) deep water. I am thinking about getting one.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety

      It does the same as a kayak would, pretty well. Ankle deep may be pushing it but it does float in shallower water than other kayaks I've paddle with I've noticed. A lot of that depends on how much weight is onboard as well. It does great though really.... Get One!

      Heheh, well it was a pretty dam good video nonetheless! Keep up the great work. Your videos motivated me to get back out on the water and I recently got a canoe. The boating season is just about over here in Montana but I'll get some fishing in, then in the Spring... :D

  • @Dachdogoriginal
    @Dachdogoriginal Před 7 lety

    Dude!!!! You should never go under a dam like that. That was incredibly dangerous. They have scheduled releases that they don't announce to the public. Please think about the example you are setting out for others that watch you. Respect your life and be prepared for what you are doing. Please.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 6 lety

      I agree with you, most situations I wouldn't do something like this. Although their release schedules are released to the public and I checked and double checked them. Also with this particular dam, the release was far on the other side and no where near where I was so I felt like there wasn't much danger. The water coming over was just a leaky flood gate I'm pretty sure ;)
