      Its all about experience. No one learns to paddle like that over night! My father had me kayaking (well canoeing back then) since I could walk, and I'm still learning and I'm in my early 50s. Every place you paddle is slightly different. Sometimes you take waves in the face all day and other days its like floating on glass. Its all about learning and experiencing a couple of good failures because they teach the most!

      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety +2

    Several suggestions Trip. You can always install a flush mount rod holder to the back of ya and drag a baited line while paddling. " trolling". Practice your wet re entries before your rolls. Watching and doing it, is totally different.As the saying goes...... practice makes perfect. You're right, when in deeper water and don't know what to do, you're screwed! Carry a little hand held umbrella with ya to catch the wind in the direction that you're going,saves ya from paddling. For Gods sake invest in some dance lessons will ya??!! Lmao! GREAT VIDEO!!! and thx for another funny adventure!
    Cheers!

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey Keith, glad you enjoyed the video! Dance lessons? I took ballroom dance in college! And aerobic dance to! lol Seriously I did (apparently didn't learn much)
      I've thought about the rod holder..... I need to just go ahead and do that.
      I've actually done wet re entries before and didn't have an issue, of course that was with the yak empty vs half full of water. I've got a good buddy who has offered to teach me to roll.
      Handheld umbrella, lol great tip!
      Thanks for watching and the great comment Keith!

    • @LarryTalbot_1313
      @LarryTalbot_1313 Před 7 lety

      If you install a flush mount rod holder, beware of brands. They are supposed to be sealed, but some take on water. That might no be a big deal on the average day, but if you are in chop or bad weather, you'd be surprised how much water can accumulate and how quickly. If you don't bail it, in a couple of bad weather hours, it will be like pushing a tank uphill!

    Enjoyed the video! That is one of my favorite places on earth, like home to me. We usually stay in Indian Pass but go to the Cape for icecream scalloping, and fishing. I will say it is 10x easier getting back in a SOT kayak like the Jackson Kraken or Cuda. Much more stable and they're self bailing with scupper holes. Keep up the fun work man, really enjoy the videos!

    hey Trip, if you ever get caught out with out your under quilt again, try to tighten up your hammock and drop it down low to the ground so when you lay in it you are only a few inches off the ground, it can be a little awkward at first, but it will keep you warmer, thanks for the videos, I can't wait to head out on my own kayak adventure!

    If you add a paddle bag to your safety equipment. It's a bag you inflate on the end of you paddle that acts like a pontoon to assist in climbing back into your kayak. Atwood makes one that you can get for less than $20. I don't go on the water without mine.

    Great trip, Trip! Rolling can be a pain... Just remember the happy Gilmore quote, "it's all in the hips" but it's fun to watch it fail. I'm waiting for my wife and I's new kayaks to come in then we are going to paddle out and camp on Cumberland island, sc. Wanted to get a boat with dry hatches before attempting that else the waves would soak our gear.
    I was curious where we can get a SnS shirt like you had; looked on Amazon store and didn't see it.
    We appreciate your videos; fun to watch and nice encouragement to leave the couch.

      New yaks in the mail? What a great feeling lol What did the two of you go for?
      The bonuses of having your gear secure in a dry compartment. I wouldn't want to have to digging in dry bags every time I wanted something. That's a big reason I like the Sit Insides although some SOT's have them as well.
      The shirts? I guess I should make myself a little more clear - They are at S&S.com at the S&S Gear page, here ya go - sailingandsuch.com/shop/
      I appreciate you both watching and glad to hear they were good motivation to get out there!

    I learned rollover technique before I even bought my kayak, went to a training day at my local watersports centre. Practiced with an instructor in a big outdoor pool, its really easy to get the basics down when you have someone there to show you where your going wrong, might be worth a try even for an experienced paddler like yourself.

      Thanks Jack! I got it years ago from Amazon. If I had to do it again I probably would buy one that breaks down into a few pieces and screws together to make it easier to store in the yak. Just looked on Amazon and there are several break down pole spears on there.

    Also, it is good you practiced reentries on you boat. Those long sea kayaks are great for speed and cargo, but deep water self rescues are tough. You are a young guy. I'm getting old, so that is why I bought a Santa Cruz Kayaks Raptor SOT. Not as fast as your boat, but real stable, built for surf and easier for old guys like me to make a reentry.,

    I really liked you section on flipping your kayak and I loved the fact that you showed how hard it is to get back into a sea / touring kayak. Now take into account how much energy you expended while trying to get back in and think about how much more would have been needed in water over your head and say 60 degrees or cooler. You need a paddle float they are cheap and turn your paddle into an outrigger allowing you to get in on the first try when in water over your head. Every year someone is killed in my area (Chesapeake Bay) because they run out of energy in deep water and just can't get back into their boat, then they drown or die from exposure. Way too many people, me included when I started out, have no idea just how dangerous kayaking can be. They think no motor, cheap boat, they sell them at Wal-Mart that makes them kids stuff right? I can tell you I live in an area that has more waterways than roadways so everyone owns some sort of boat and more people are killed in kayaks and small non powered boats than larger rec (skiing / fishing) power boats each year round my way.
    Trip think about this, your kayak is MUCH harder to get back into when loaded down with camping gear, in water over your head with a little bit of wave action rolling. Buy a paddle float and practice getting back in when loaded in deep ruff water (with a friend as a safety observer) I want to see you keep making videos I really like them your one of my fav You Tubers and This was is great video to show people how hard kayak re-entry can be. It's not if your going to flip your kayak, it's when. Cause if you kayak enough you will flip at a time and place that is less than ideal at some point or another.
    I was with a friend who is an excellent swimmer but new to kayaking who almost drowned last summer cause he had a small bag between his knees. He turned around to say something to me and his yak just went over, no apparent reason. the bag made a wedge between his legs and the inside cockpit of the boat. He was locked in like a wedge. The harder he tried to get out the more locked in he became. finally after a long time it seemed (I was paddling back to him like crazy to assist) he relaxed and unlodged the bag allowing him to swim out. If he had not been a former combat Marine and current Police Officer I don't know if he would have been able to calm himself down enough and rethink his issue and get out just before blacking out like he did. He said he was seconds from drowning when he got out. I'm not trying to be the safety police just trying to put some food for thought out there.

      Turning turtle can be scary if you struggle getting out. I've done it some off camera on other trips and there were times that were harder to exit than others. I could only imagine being stuck. Calm clear thinking is absolutely key though for sure.
