Kratos getting down to Brok's level to present the spear and Brok agreeing to the blessing is one of the greatest examples of character growth I've seen in a game. I thought the game couldn't top the Freya therapy session in Vanirheim and then it just keeps getting better. It's so well written.
lets not forget the fact that he literally accepts a side quest because he's developed empathy as a father. THATS HUGE
I actually teared up at that scene. It was so moving.

The starting cutscene was so well done, according to Norse Myths the Norns are more of storywriters, which is why making Urd talk in first person, Verdandi in third person and Skuld in Quotes just like a written story was so fucking clever.

It's clever and enjoyable writing. Had a little moment when I realised what's going on.
For those who do not know, Draupnir, according to Norse mythology, is a ring that creates 8 copies of itself every 9 days. This is why it's stored in a room full of rings; its own duplicates. It's also why the Draupnir spear can be summoned repeatedly from the ring Kratos wears. Funny how Sindri hints that they used Draupnir for infinite resources, which is quite clever
Does mean it is impossible for Freyr to woo Gerdr by gifting her Draupnir though.

@@atlashellwalker9769 like the main comment said, they stored in that cave at the bottom filled with a shitload of rings is where they store it, and they probably use excess rings to melt and turn into other things. if you mean for kratos though, the mermaid probably touched it up
About the ring though, the reson why sindri hesitated to put it in the bag was because the ring releases telekinetic thoughts that influence the holder to keep it. its even more potent on dwarves.
Something I just realized is that Odin’s portrayal is a textbook example of an abuser. He showers people with gifts and kindness, until they disappoint him, which makes him lash out, but quickly beg for forgiveness. You can even see it in his conversation with Kratos where he’ll say something rude and be like “I’m sorry you didn’t deserve that”
I think if someone sees all instances of slights against them, real or perceived, as abuse, they'd be more inclined to call the people around them abusers more often. That being said Odin does have that Small business owner narcissitic father god (literally) complex you see with owners of car dealerships so often.

Yes, he is a legitimate abuser. Last episode his portrayal gave me such bad chills. Very impressive how accurate it is to real life, incredible acting and dialogue

At the part where Brok was asking for a blessing, I just noticed that Kratos bowed slightly to the Lady. He thanked her but didn't ask to have it blessed. He wanted Brok's blessing
god I didn't even notice that - it really shows his character, how he favours a blessing of one he holds close rather than the Lady whom he had just met!
Kratos asking for the blessing from a great blacksmith almost made me tear up, especially with Brok's reaction and the wording of his blessing. May that spear strike Odin through his other eye!
That scene was so touching to me. He really respected Brok. And he made him feel a lot better too

My favorite part about the Norns is that when Freya tells Skuld "shut up", Skuld actually respects her wishes and stops preempting her words... but not Kratos's, because he didn't ask her to.
It kinda makes me wonder if she is capable of speaking her own words? Or can she only speak the words of others? Sounds like a strange and sad existence.

I think Skuld chips in whenever she wants to disrupt their callers' train of thought. Having someone echo your words as you speak them is _supremely_ distracting. It's all part of the show the Norns put on.
That or the writers realized they made their point with who she was and what she does.
I think it's really cool that Kratos carries such a diverse arsenal from different times in his life:
Blades from an enemy.
An axe from a lover
A spear from a friend.
Blades to symbolize killing the enemy
An Axe to symbolize love going through obstacles like how an axe chops through wood
A Spear to symbolize the straightforward of friendship
A spear is also the first weapon a Spartan uses, so it is natural for Kratos to use the draupnir spear.
Kratos didn’t even try to kill the fates.Good for him.
I don't think the Norns are like the Sisters of Fate. Similar, yes, but different.
Kratos changed, he is no longer the blood thirsty god killer.

I mean it's even said that they don't hold the power like the fate sisters do. So even if Kratos has a reason to kill them (aka to save atreus) it would be down to useless because they don't seemed to hold the power to influence fate itself

The part where Kratos asks Brok to bless his spear gave me the feels. "It needs the blessing of a great blacksmith" "It is the nature of a thing that matters. Not its form." Considering how Kratos treated Brok from the last game til now shows Krato's respect for his craft and abilities, and also his gratitude for Brok's help.

One thing I have noticed about Kratos is that he does not speak much but when he does speak, his words are chosen carefully and precisely. When he speaks, you better listen because he has important things to say.

For those who don't know:
Mimir told a brief story of a nimph from his homeland named Nimue.
Nimue is the legendary *"Lady of the Lake"* that forged *Excalibur.*
This part is just a theory but, Mimir spoke very fondly of Nimue. In the legend Merlin and Nimue had a brief romance. I'd say that it's entirely possible that Mimir is Merlin.

I love that Odin is almost stutter-y in the way speaks, this seemingly unsure tone as an attempt to put people at ease and underestimate him. Odin's design is brilliant

So when Sindri said ‘he can’t talk to the lady’ he meant it as he is unable, not just ‘he shouldn’t.’
Well, a bit of both. "If he tries to talk to the Lady, he'll realize his soul is incomplete because he died and I only managed to resurrect 75% of him."
She communicates through the soul, and Brok doesnt have all of it. So then we see he gets upset upon realizing she can't "see" him.

That’s the line that cemented this game’s intelligence in my mind. At it’s core, it’s about killing gods, and always has been, there’s just more emotional weight
Think about it. The tapestry isint gonna portray Tyr. It’s gonna portray kratos. The spear. And now he’s going to kill heimdal getting the gjallarhorn. It shows a warrior with a spear and horn

Felt like a bit of meta commentary tbh. Kinda like, "Yeah, this is a God of War game; what the Hel do you actually expect from it? There is a script to the game, sure, and you can call that 'destiny' if you want, but as long as we who make the game are free to make choices about where that script should be headed, there need not be such thing as 'destiny'. But if things are ever to deviate from following the same predictable rails, the formula may have to change in a more substantial way."
It's a pretty obvious commentary on people's reactions to god of war 2018 I guess, not really that deep. The norns are basically a red herring anyway, not substantial to the story in any manner.
The infant dragon collecting sidequest is basically just Kratos helping Ratatosker become a Dragon type Gym Leader, he's even putting them into a Poke Ball!

In case anyone is wondering, the upwards arrow the Lady formed with Kratos' blood is the symbol of the spartan army, which is why when she applied it into the spear it manifested into a spartan battle standard

The more you think about it, Kratos is terrifying. Imagine him impaling you with the blades of chaos, it's like molten lava running through your body. Or the leviathan axe, so cold your limbs will break like a twig to the slightest touch of the severe frostbite it wields. Even the spear, being impaled multiple times then having them pop inside your body like fireworks, exploding multiple organs at a time.

If ya dont already know jack the second symbol after the omega symbol used for the greek god of war(kratos in this universe) is the symbol of a spartan, traditionally the symbol is seen on all shields of spartans who serve in the army of Sparta, the symbols name is lambda which stood for Laconia or Lacedaemon and was first adopted in 420s BC, spartan military families would pass down their shields to each generation as family heirlooms, the more ya know! 😊

Jack's comment on the whole encounter with the Norns was spot on. I love that they effectively provided a meta-criticism of the entire franchise and Kratos' role in it. Also, noting how short it was, I'm pretty sure that was the point. Nobody leaves satisfied, not even the players!

I also loved the part where Freya says “It’s Aukin time!”, and leaves to get milk from the Einherjar’s nipples for the rest of the spear sequence.

@@anisgilos It's because Odin's whole shtick is to seem amicable. You hear about all these terrible things he'd done, but when you meet him, he acts so...nice. You know he's evil, but it's hard to believe he's the same guy you heard about.
But that little moment right there, that slip-up, that's the real Odin. All those pleasantries are just to get inside your head. He's trying to be so reasonable with Kratos, appealing to his desire to avoid war, but him mentioning the fall of Olympus makes it clear that Odin doesn't care about peace. He just wants control, and Kratos is a threat.

Him asking Brok to bless the spear was so beautiful, and him turning Brok's own words against him. "It is the nature of a thing that matters, not it's form" nearly made me cry
he knelt down to him as well. Kratos doesn't say thank you often but he knows to show it when it counts. He's also getting genuinely kinder as the series progresses. Learning from others, even the side quests- I'm hoping for a scene where he's genuinely soft and affectionate with Atreus at the end of this. Being more in touch with his father side instead of his war general side.

@@brooklynapeterson it's something i've noticed. Atreus was drawn to Sindri. Sindri would help Atreus lie to Kratos and help Atreus sneak around. Meanwhile Kratos appreciate's Brok because he's completely honest. he's probably the only one who never keeps anything from Kratos in the journey and I think he appreciates that a lot.
It's awesome when Kratos shows his homies how much he respects them.
I personally love Richard Schiff as Odin. He really brings that sort of two faced, twisted, yet charismatic vibe to the character
He's very manipulative and a good talker too. I love it
I have to admit he does portray the character very well. At first I was al little upset, not with the voice but with the model but its grown on me.
It also plays into the weaker cowardice and narcissistic nature better. I'm glad that it's what they went with.
He reminds me of Jafar from Aladdin. Silver tongued and sweet as honey, but will stab you in the chest with a smile on his face to achieve his ends with a snap of his fingers
@@captainleonox3818 It also shows the contrast between the Greek and Norse gods. Most of the Greek gods were muscular - think Zeus, Poseidon, Heracles, &c.. Even some of the more minor gods like Hephaestus were still physically imposing and even Hermes was bigger than your average guy.
By contrast, the Norse gods aren't muscular. The only real exception to my knowledge is Thor, but even then he's built like a strongman and not a bodybuilder. Odin, Heimdall, and Baldur are all thinner and Baldur even looks a little emaciated.

The norn cutscene was a lot of fun to write I bet. They speak in present tenses and say other characters' lines so I wonder how this scene looked in the script. The norns are probably just reading it out loud

The way kratos drops to one knee and ask for a blessing. He had full faith in him and gave him comfort and confidence by asking such a thing from him. And the way brok spoke the blessing. It was from the heart and beautiful
Seeing Kratos be kinder to his allies and friends makes my heart happy. Also him calling Mimir by his name instead of just 'head' as well and sort of kind of bantering with everyone? Ya love to see it. Also A SPEAR, YEESSSS PLEASE!!! Gods I want this game so bad.
The character development in this game is probably the best I've seen in any form of media aside from literal real people.

That scene with the Norns is phenomenal! As I was watching it I realized each of their dialogue is written from the three different narrative points of view. One is a narrator speaking from a 3rd person perspective about the events transpiring, one speaks at the same time as the characters, which is basically being in 1st person, and the other speaks directly to them as another participant in the events, which is 2nd person. Props to everyone who worked on that scene (honesty, to everyone who worked on this whole game), that's such a cool way to write the dialogue for omniscient fates.
They felt very meta. The things they said, too, about scripts and destiny, felt like they leaned heavily on the 4th wall. But will things deviate in a more significant way than "[Kratos] still slays gods, but now he’s sad about it?"
Shame none of it is brought up again and really just skips a part of the story
I'm still a little disappointed he didn't end with killing them...
I know he had no reason to kill them it just seems like the thing to do. When you talk with all seeing future telling gods you kill them after.

@@Nick-fb9uq damn near broke my heart when Mimir told Brok and then Kratos performs one of his most noble and humble acts ever and bows before his dwarf friend and asks him to bless his weapon. Cherry on top was Brok's blessing gives you a little insight into his character as he asks that the wielder uses it with wisdom and that the weapon be set aside when it is no longer needed. The entire scene had me swallowing a lump in my throat.

Kratos wanting Brok to do the blessing for the spear and calling him a great blacksmith says so much about their friendship. Kratos truly thinks of him as a very close friend
And Kratos respects Brok. They both speak their minds plainly, so Brok doesn’t have to fear that Kratos' words are platitudes said only to distract him.
This is one of the scenes that made me ugly cry.

I love how many arguments there are in this game. How the characters all feel like real people, who say something, and either choose to stand by it, or recognized that they've said something impulsive and shows regret over it later. It's so realistic and immersive!
Kratos keeps on becoming more sincere and thoughtful in his speech the more the story goes on, even here 1:09:53
One thing I LOVED about the Norns, was the fact that they themselves followed the archetype for many interpretations/embodiments of fate found in so many different cultures. The Maiden, The Mother and The Crone. It really makes them feel so familiar yet still so otherworldly and so menacing in such a subtle way that the whole time you're with them, you are just so on edge. So, so good.
And then the way the characters play RIGHT into their hands, simply based on a few key statements the Norns make. Fate may not be pre-written, but you can't deny that the Norns don't enjoy preying on the nature of those they interact with and influencing them and their choices.

I think you’re right, they do enjoy it but I also think they more so find it really amusing that everyone, be they mortal or god, who seeks them out intends to change/deny fate but because they act so “predictably” (in the Norn’s own words) they end up crashing headfirst into the very fate they meant to avert. That in trying so hard to change things they choose the path that leads them exactly where it was predicted they’d end up because in trying to change fate they don’t change themselves/their nature. It’s almost like a poker game/chess game with the universe where to win you have to ignore bluffs that look like they’d win you the game and play outside the box or opposite of your normal style.
The way the Norns describe it I think it’s legitimately a perfect example of divine/cosmic irony. The Norns don’t even really HAVE to do or say anything. Even as they tell them those tidbits about the future they straight up say that the characters acting “predictably” or in the nature they would usually react will lead them to the fate they wish to avoid. Everyone just chooses to ignore that in favor of the other information the Norns are giving.
Now that I’m thinking about it It’s like confirmation bias on steroids LMAOOO
Like.....they literally make it pretty damn plain that THERE IS NO FATE. It's just that everyone is so damn predictable they always do what the Norns say they will.....not because there's no free will, but because you're all incredibly, boringly predictable.
And the best part, the very best part, is that *Kratos, Freya and Mirmir completely fucking ignore all of this and act entirely predictably* as the Norns flat out said to their big, stupid faces. It's simultaneously infuriating to watch them do it, and yet the entire damn point.

Yeah, sad time that he never pauses on the runes long enough to notice the upgrade prompt (again). In fact, I think earlier in the series he did upgrade one (he realized you use exp to level them up which is why the game seemingly gives you too much) but the game has simply tossed too many mechanics and side stuff at him so his brain has been overwhelmed. There is kind of a lot of bloat in the menus because of how much stuff there is. Not a bad thing, most games in the genre do this, but for some this is the result.
I mean you have three weapons for kratos each with two runes and a handle, three kinds of shields with a boss, then you have a relic, three peices of armor for kratos, the necklace with up to nine slots, then you have Freya's skill trees, her armor, sword, and bow with three talisman slots and then the same for Atreus. On top of that you have all the combo attacks and abilities for all three characters and of course lore and side quests galore on top of having to remember where all the shit you need to backtrack to was when you were there hours if not days ago. On top of that he has is career as a content creator to distract him further.
It was inevitable, really.

my favorite thing about this game has to be kratos' journal entry. Because of how little he speaks and how short his sentences are when he does speak it paints him as almost like a meathead, but reading his journal entries you see that kratos is actually quite smart, and it makes me see him a lot differently, less like a beefed killing machine and more of an intelligent being.
Mimir asking him riddles and Kratos getting them instantly is great.
I’m aware his past as a Spartan did require him to be literate and he is tactically smart. So not a meathead, yes, but we know how much his rage blinds him and that’s what people tend to remember him for.

Kratos isn't a sociopath. He likes making people feel better, just like any normal person. It's just that all his training and life experience is around killing things (up to and including gods), so if the problem at hand can't be solved by killing something, he might be at a loss.
Still, you're right - it was good to see Kratos find a non-killing solution to something.

I wonder if the God of War games will ever explore Celtic mythology & folklore/ legends.
We know Mimir comes from the Celtic lands (3:38 he's supposed to be Puck/ Robin Goodfellow from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"), so he's probably got a lot of history there for the games to explore. Mimir has made a number of referrences to Celtic folklore in both games, i.e.:
- Oberon & Titania, king & queen of the faeries
- Nimue (Merlin's lover & Excalibur's creator) 1:52:57
- Kelpies 0:09
- the story of Macbeth, etc.
1 of the 4 symbols in Tyrs vault was Celtic so I’m guessing they might. Seeing how one of the other symbols was Egyptian I believe, hence the ending of the game
The way the Norns see what most call destiny is exactly how I see it. A being outside of our reality or one who can view time would be able to see the end true, but ultimately the path to get there is an emergent property of all the decisions made by all beings and quantum superstates simultaneously acting together. Or at least that is what I think goes on
The axe, twin blades, a frickin soul reaver blade, and now an infinite spear. This game just keeps getting better. This playthrough, specifically your playthrough, has been an absolute joy to watch.
Maybe we'll get to use Mjollnir too :D

I think one of the best things in the new games is how they use his theme in very specific moments where parts of his old self shines through like if you looked at his face during that scene you could see he wanted to kill them but he knew that it would not change anything because unlike the fates from greek mythos they don't have the power to control fate. Also the Odin scene where his theme also came through and you could see Odin got scared

1:53:07 Jack missed a pretty big King Arthur reference here. Nimue was the name of the Lady of the Lake, the Fae entity responsible for raising Lancelot like a son and both forging and gifting Arthur with Excalibur... hence the "talented with a sword" line. Calling her a lake nymph is their way of keeping it from being too obvious.

Mm yeah there's a lot of references that state that mimir was from England before he came to midgard. He was called Puck and robin goodfellow in both games, and sigrun referred to Titania, the Queen of A midsummer nights dream.
