    I always am amazed when watching some videos of these UK engines cranking for what seems like 20 minutes before they make the first puff of smoke, and then it's another 10 minutes before they're up and running. This engine is hard to tell if it's running at all, and is so clean and quiet in comparison.

      The latest ESU decoders have a very accurate Tier 4, Prime Mover, sound file (S0735). The SoundTraxx TS2 Tier 4 sound decoders are great too, just tad bit too much chuffing; but still nice. The prototype actually has two turbochargers, one large and one small; producing a unique sound signature.

      If you get a chance to hear them in person, and close by, you’ll be surprised how loud they can get under load in run 7 or 8!

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220 Před 3 lety +3

      @@stevetodd478 Agreed! They lack the classic chug in the middle notches, but I think they sound far better (and louder) at full throttle. And under the right conditions you can still hear the chugging near half throttle...sounds pretty cool with the two stage turbo setup.

    • @stevetodd478
      @stevetodd478 Před 3 lety +3

      @@railfan220 indeed. The latest version of the HO ESU Tier 4, is very close now. They have continued to make new recordings, and with this one, they made great improvements!

    • @stevetodd478
      @stevetodd478 Před 3 lety +2

      Indeed, I have the latest HO ET44C4 from InterMountain, and it has the latest version S0735 sound file. It’s a great improvement from previous versions. However, still lacks the true sounds of the Tier 4. ESU USA has contacted me about the new file, and seem interested in improving the sound files even more. I wouldn’t rule out a new file from them in the near future. Glad they are continuing to make it right, shows they care.

    • @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife
      @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife Před 3 lety +1

      I love both GEVO and 710s, unfortunately, the 710 is functionally extinct so no use making a fuss of it. They are only making new blocks for international rail and power generation, internstional maritime, domestic marine and rail repower, and special use customers now. I'm not even sure if they're still making them at the La Grange facility anymore or if it's active. EMD has mostly moved it's production out of the Chicago area (but management is still here last I checked and CAT just fully moved it's HQ from peoria to Chicago recently so who knows). I'll have to drive over that way this weekend to have a look. I'm curious now.

    • @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife
      @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife Před 2 lety +1

      @@sontungle2641 it's pretty incredible they were able to achieve that. I am sad though that the 710 program was never pushed to meet tier IV. From what I understand from people familiar with the company, it's not that it was "impossible" to get the 710 to Tier-IV without SCR, it's that it would've taken too much sink cost to develop the engine like that. Even so, they came quite close with just adding an EGR system on top of a test engine. I think they would have had to modify the injectors, compression ratio, redesign the turbocharger, among other things like Crank Case Ventilation CV via the EGR.
      And on another note, how come did neither EMD nor GE develop a cheaper solution of HC-SCR (hydrocarbon reductant SCR, ie, using diesel instead of DEF to catalyze diesel emissions). Another technology that could help curb emissions is DFI or ducted fuel injection. We'll probably see these technologies deployed on Tier-V engines.
