Russia's 'Mango' Armour-Piercing Ammunition For T-90 Main Battle Tanks Now Being Made In India

- The Russian state corporation ROSTEC, through its subsidiary Rosoboronexport, has launched the production of 3VBM17 Mango ammunition, equipped with armour-piercing sub-calibre projectiles, in India. These munitions, designed to target armoured vehicles with advanced protection, are part of the Make In India program. ROSTEC made this announcement on July 4, 2024. The 125mm Mango rounds are compatible with T-72 and T-90 tanks, which are essential for the Indian Ground Forces. These Russian tanks are indeed present in large numbers in the Indian arsenal. A lot of Russian equipment and spare parts are made in India. But…and there’s always a but….
Transfer of technology includes significant payment for Russian defense companies. Not all components are manufactured in India (some are sent for assembly). And Indian made knock offs of Russian made equipment isn’t allowed to be resold for profit to other countries unless the Russians give explicit permission to do so.
Then there is the issue of low availability rates of Su-30MKI, crash rates of MiG-21, etc. Both of these aircraft were assembled in India, utilizing parts made from Indian defense companies. So quality wise, it’s questionable how good these end products are..

3BM60 is the latest and most prominent used round in Russian tanks. Why are they handing us their old 3BM42 rounds?
It's almost certainly the 3BM42-2 version. Longer penetrator and better propellants give it some 20-25% better performance than the original mango and they fit the t72/90 autoloaders without any modification. Svinets2 are probably too expensive given India's massive tank fleet and, frankly, they 're overkill against Pakistani or Chinese armor.

Because that's not for Ukraine, that production batch won't go back to Russia, at least not now, and also, tank on tank combat is so uncommon in Ukraine that's almost useless.

But by itself, an armor-piercing projectile is almost not needed in this war because there are no such massive tank battles as in World War II. Russia has plenty of these armor-piercing shells. And this conflict in Ukraine requires a high-explosive shell. Tanks in Ukraine are destroyed in 95% of cases by artillery, airborne drones, lancet drones, and ATGM complexes. Why would Russia suddenly run out of old armor-piercing shells in this case???
