  • PM Modi was in Moscow this week, marking his first visit to Russia since the country invaded Ukraine in 2022. The hug between Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin caused a global stir, drawing particular ire from Western nations and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor delve into the relationship between India and Russia, analysing how it has evolved over various Indian administrations.
Looking at it more militarily, the defence duo answers why India heavily relies on Russian military equipment, detailing India's extensive inventory of Russian hardware, from Sukhoi jets and MiG series aircraft to T-90 and T-72 tanks. Russia’s cost-effective and reliable supplies have historically catered to India's defence needs.
What do Russia and India gain from this alliance? Is Russian military equipment the best choice for India? What are the challenges India faces in reducing its reliance on Russian arms? Has the Ukraine war exposed vulnerabilities in Russian equipment, prompting India to seek alternatives? ‘India realised this a long time ago,’ says Shiv. So, what does the future hold for the India-Russia defence relationship?

India has avoided war between Venuzala & Guyana. The Venuzala is indebted to Russia. Now look the trick , Russia bought oil from Venuzala and sells it to India. All 3 are benifitef. Now Venuzala has stopped bullying Guyana which has found oil and India is helping in oil exploration the country has 40% indentured labours. What a diplomatic act for the benifit of all these countries

Interesting discussion by Dev Goswami and Shiv Aroor on the continued predominance of Russian arms and systems in India’s arsenal and the resilience of that bilateral relationship. As noted, the main selling point of Russian equipment, despite its high maintenance costs, is their reliability as a supplier. One hopes the U.S. takes that point seriously if it hopes to secure more high value arms deals from India. And India is still a major arms buyer, despite the indigenization push.
Regarding the Arjun tank, there are reports that all the research and development by the DRDO that went into it, is now being used for coming up with a prototype of the new lighter Zorawar tank, with many off-the-shelf parts, that will be useful in mountainous terrain in India’s northern frontier with China.

@@user-xs2ru9on4s there are some design problems in some classes of equipments, namely T72/T90 tanks, in general Russia equipment is very good in terms of price/quality. But in terms of air capabilities, having the second best fighter is not really a option, and Russian in a two year war against a opponent that has almost no air assetes was unable to dominate the sky's, and that is really weird.

French Mirage 2000 were bought for qualitative edge over limited scale conflict and Russian jets for quantitative edge over long prolonged war.
U must understand.. Indian military is vast with limited budget.. So can't afford overall qualitative equipments. For that u need indigenous industry.
