    The 1971-72 season had the most amazing finish. One point seperated the top four teams. On the final midweek games - three were still in it (Derby, Leeds, Liverpool) Never been such a tight 4-way ever!!

    • @paulgraham6316
      @paulgraham6316 Před rokem

      Indeed. Liverpool drew against Arsenal and Leeds, much fancied, lost to Wolves, thus handing the title to Clough's Derby County who had already given up the race and were on holiday abroad. And we'll say nothing of the Emlyn Hughes attempt at bribing the Arsenal players for Liverpool's final game.

    Back in the day when teams weren't even allowed to wear the same colour shirts, shorts or even socks as the opposition in case of a clash of colours. Hence the sometimes odd combinations shown in these old clips. I recall whenever Liverpool played Watford away it had to red shirt, black shorts and yellow socks.

    At the start of this season, Manchester United played their first *home* league game at *Anfield*. They beat Arsenal 3-1. Their second *home* league game was played at Stoke's old Victoria Ground where they also won 3-1 against WBA. United had been banned from playing their first two home league games at Old Trafford because of crowd trouble there at the end of the previous season.

      Leeds had to play Four `Home` games at neutral grounds. They won two and drew two. Ironic, as they were the only Division 1 side that season to be unbeaten at `Home!`

    I love this vintage football, I could stay hours to see it. I admire the bravery and the courage of all players and their positive mental attitude to try to push forward the ball under any condition.
    One thing that always amazed me is the low skill level of most of the goalkeepers. I'm not talking about reflexes or courage, they had plenty of it, I'm talking about the lack of even the basic skill level and ABC of goalkeeper technique.

      Ecz 1967, exactly mate. The goal keepers were so dodgy but great at the same time. I still wouldnt pass the ball back to them even when the could pick it. In a game once i played in our defender past it back in 1991 before the new rule came out, so we waited on him picking it up then he tried to beat the forward who easily took it off him then scored. We were livid, spitting teeth. To me its like just scoring a goal for the other team, thats why he was a goal keeper becouse he couldnt beat players and was 5'10" tbh i thought he was a bit to small to be keeper. 6ft would have made him better. But he did pull of some great saves though. This was when most keepers were 6ft then 3 years later they were 6'4" to 6'6" but i was told keep your shot down low becouse there too tall to get down to it fast? And he was right.

      Nick dunne, so true. Or at least 6 players, 3 from each side scramble about mad 6 yards out to it ends up 2 yards out then some one trys the clear it but it comes off his own team mate and brian moore screams "what a great goal that was there" he did ruin it a bit by over doing it by a long way. But did the bbc directors tell brian moore to act like that to make the game sound alot better? Am sure a read that some where in an autobiography that it was all exagerated when the commentators knew the tv cameras were there, becouse in those days only 4 games where watched by the tv cameras. But wasnt it just brilliant to watch from 1967 to the early 1970s becouse 1967 was when coloured television sets were made, but they were dear. Becouse they were so hard to make. I still thinck the colour looked better then than todays? Todays looks kind of fake colour. But its brilliant seeing the old strips with no badges on them becouse they didnt need badges. Then the parks getting muddy as it went into november, then by febuary they had some sand scatterd on the goal mouth becouse it was at least 3 inches deep in mud right up to the 18 yard line, then the middle of the park was just the same, about 11 feet wide in mud and at least 17 feet long. You rarely saw a medic come on unless some one broke a leg, arm, jaw, anything. Becouse they were harder men then especialy with George Best playing at that time and at his best, becouse one of the first things that stuck out about him was he never shirked the tackle even if it was 70/30 against. Best still went for it and hard. Even high balls with his head and ones at about 4ft high he would go into 4 players and take it on his chest, and these are men that are going to clatter you and no holding back. And watching how good the football was on they mud swamp potatoe field parks, the way they could hit a 50 yard pass and right onto your foot. Then the mud the was on there strips and faces, becouse i played on parks like that and we loved it. Great players can play on a knife edge. Any surface is no problem to they guys that you just watched. So what would they be like on todays carpets lol with no tackling allowed, or even if you thinck about a tackle your off and finend 2 million pounds, 2 weeks wages? Am gratefull to have been old enough to have watched football like this and played it as well with so many great players!

    Any summary of the 71-72 season is a bit lacking if it doesn't contain Martin Chivers' masterly second goal for Spurs against Wolves in the UEFA cup final, first leg, at Molineux.

    A cant believe they didnt show the two best goals that we will never see again. As in the george best goal against sheffield utd october 1971 when he picked up the ball just over the halfway line then made a diagonal run across the park getting faster then faster then faster and he went past at least 5 or 6 players and they thought he had went to far wide to score, but george knew where he was going and as the keeper came out to block is awkward angle george kind of puts his foot round the ball as he shoots past the keepers far side in off the post it went. And you see the keeper looking at the ball in the net then strangley looking at george lol as if to say "wait a minute georgie did some one knock that in or did the goals move at least 4ft along the line to you lol then against southampton in november 1971 charlton plays a great ball into the box along the grass then george some how gets it then draws it back of the defender with the inside of his foot then in the same movement he does a double shimmy that muhamud ali would have been proud of and sends the second defender the other way then george just places the ball away into the bottem corner, it was as if the ball was stuck to his foot the whole time. Brilliant. And we wont see a goal like that again. A had the impression the bbc had it in for george tbh. If he was born english they would have shown every goal he scored that year and not 1 or 2.
