Octopath Traveler 2 Review

- Watch our Octopath Traveler 2 review! Five years after the original, this sequel from Square Enix sticks a little too closely to the original systems without expanding on them much. The still lovely visuals don’t stand out as much anymore, but the turn-based combat system is still quite fun and satisfying. If you liked the original Octopath Traveler (or even any of the Bravely Default games) Octopath Traveler 2 is another good ol' fashioned 80-hour JRPG - it just might be one you feel like you’ve played before.
Octopath Traveler 2 reviewed by Seth Macy on Nintendo Switch, also available on PlayStation and PC.

The soundtrack of this game is truly phenomenal. It is not even mentioned once.
Agree
Agreed
Playing it in theatrhythm is going to be beautiful.
Ign barely ever talks about the music unless it’s doom
That's very subjective, perhaps the score wasn't as striking to this player as it was to you.
If you've played the first one to completion you will know the differences. Animations, job reworks, day/night cycle, weapon designs, character interactions, and so much more.
is there character interactions and a actual over arching story now? because this review glossed over that completely
@@tylerdurden7965 there are entire chapters that involve different pairs or travellers working together, so I'd say there are defnitely more character interactions
Do you need to play the 1st one in order to understand the story?
@@MouadJmariNo, the stories are completely separate
@@MouadJmari noo , but if u play the first one u'll know the differences about the game , there's so much change and upgrade from the first , u'll love it 😁
why would you skip characters prologue and rush through the story just to give out a half baked review
Cause IGN lol
Yup
Cuz some journalists at IGN are ridiculously underqualified to review a game
Because it’s IGN
It’s classic IGN behaviour my friend
"Hiroki's tale"
Leave it to IGN to mess up a main character's name even after spending dozens of hours with them.
They also loved playing Xenoblade Chronicles, with Rain and Duncan.
@@Palidorbeat me to it
yup, came to the comments to post just that
Who cares 🙄
Americans really have problems with foreign/Japanese names.
I'm not sure how anyone who has played the first game could look at this and feel that it is almost indistinguishable from the original.
it is mostly the same, only color tone and better background is different. funnily this game have less area than first game despite vast map with sea, how rushed this game is.
@@caxshen Not as rushed as this review...
@@christopheribarra1170 yeah true😂they didn't even finish it.
thats quite the overstatement, it's still a pixel crafted game, they have more angles, better colours, more shadowing and other improvements but it's far away from indistinguishable lol
The sumos over this game in the chat is insane
Notice each of the 8 Travelers share a similar goal to one other Traveler:
Hikari and Ochette are on journeys to recruit others to try and save their respective homes.
Agnea and Partitio are both trying to bring happiness to others through their chosen professions.
Osvald and Throné are both seeking out the ones that have wronged them.
Temenos and Castti are both trying to solve a mystery.
Ok so.. Metacritic says it's an 86 score as of right now which fits much more. Every review is saying that if you like/love the 1st one that you will love the 2nd one even more. It was already a winning formula and they perfected it in a couple ways that could be improved. I'm so stoked for this game it looks amazing and the gameplay was so great😎
Slightly higher than the first game then, that's fine, imo.
Metacritic is an average of scores… so yea you need a mix of low and high scores to average out to 86
ты долбоеб без вкуса, кто в этом виноват
1:48 who in the hell plays games like this? Do you skim through books and then get upset when you don't understand what's going on? You're playing a jrpg. A genre known for their well-crafted stories. If you decided to skip a characters entire reason for going on their Adventure you had literally nobody to blame for yourself.
This review be like:
Yeah the games better than the first in every way… 2.3 points lower score it is!
lol
More like.. well this game is basically the exact same one as the first one which came out 5 years ago with very minor improvements
Game didn't advance much at all. And looks the exact same. if this were Ubisoft you would be mad the score wasn't lower.
Yeah but if it’s changed some for the better and has a great story. A way lower score makes little sense. That’s like scoring borderlands high and another one way lower because it plays the same.
This is actually one of the lowest score this game has gotten. Pretty much everybody else says the game fixes most issues with the first one and is all 8-9s
He said he charged thru the game with little regard to the story which is a terrible idea for this game. Apparently the story is much improved, but he hardly talks about them at all
@@philipsparks6089 That explains a lot about this goofy review.
why should every review be the same? if you like the game then fine, that’s great. that should be enough. if you need every review to be positive then that’s just sad.
@@megastephatron A reviewer shouldnt be skipping the damn story in the first place.
If you need IGN to tell you what to buy you got bigger problems than the score
So you're upset that you didn't bother playing through the characters first chapter only to find out later that it was crucial to the story? Lmao
I'm glad to have played the demo. Because this was a half-assed review
For real man, the second one is way better than the first
That’s not what he’s sayin, it’s ok to be a fan boy but
How exactly? Because the number at the end wasn’t big enough for you?
Seriously IGN, a 7? Did you even play the game.
Love that the reviewer chose to skip content tho
A reviewer does not need to do everything in the game
@@twakilon When he skips story in an RPG. He doesn't get a fair shake.
@@SourPatchKun As long as you mention it, it'a ok. Someone will relate with his review. That'a how reviews work. Not every review has to be close to the average.
@@twakilon But this ign and not some random content creator with 1000 views. They should be held to a higher standard when it comes to indepth reviews and thougts. Rushing through the game just to make a quick buck and complain about the lack of story that he's intentionally skipping. Can't even get the main character's pronunciation right.
@@SourPatchKun When did he complain about the lack of story? He praised it and actively warned against skipping.
This guy really complain about having to play the chapters of the game for each character? And he reviewed it?
You mean it’s important to see the prologues of the main characters? In a video game where it’s heavily emphasized that each character’s story is unique and intertwined with the main plot? Who could have guessed?
Plays a game explicitly about telling 8 unique stories. Chooses to "power through" and skip other character's first chapters. Complains about it.
Really feels like IGN doesn't take time with reviews anymore.
They’ve been kicking out a half-baked perspective for a long time for sure. Feels so base level.
Seems like all this reviewer was interested in was to speedrun the game by constantly referencing the danger levels and mispronouncing names.
Him saying Heroki instead of Hikari and not being able to pronounce the names just show how well this review was made
You saying Hiraki instead of Hikari takes some of the weight out of your point.
@@bjshnog MY BAD LMAO
It's literally light in Japanese
Who the hell is "Hiroki" dude 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
man I'd have to give this a solid 8.5 honestly, like the story arcs are fire af just the right pace not too slow not to in your face, theres def better character stories than others but they def keep you engaged seriously
For comparison purposes, what would you give ffvii?
@@cbtolin22 for a first time play through of FF7 like when it first came out, definitely giving it a 9 out of 10, The ONLY game that's a 10 in my book is FFT like that game has everything including replay value, like the replay value alone puts FFT at a 7 then the jobs and battles sends it over 10 but 10 for measure.
Why 8.5. Why not a 8.6 or 8.4.
Just finished it after the credits and ending, 9 out of 10. Amazing game.
This is an excellent OST with a game tacked on. The fact that you didn't mention the music is criminal
IGN needs to go back to structured reviews with gameplay, story, execution and misc sections
Says the game is too similar to the first one....Continues to list all the improvements, including story. and the graphics look better too
Might pick it up a bit later. My only real issue with the first was that there was so little that connected the characters beside little dialog opportunities. Hope that was addressed.
This was my issue in the first gane as well. It was very odd to have a group of travellers with no interaction or story intersection at all. Everything else was phenomenal!
There are episodes in this that tie them together
Yeah there are partner episodes this time round, where two characters get paired scenes together at certain points, similar to skits from Tales of.
The connection between them is kinda....subtle. The things that connected them is some kind of world breaking entity who threaten the world and without they realized, each of them had made contact with the people who involved with that entity.
40$ now might get or wait for it to drop more
*Hikari not Hiroki ;) anyways. Thank you for the review! The award winning formula is already apparent so just the slight visual upgrades during combat and of course, new soundtracks is more than enough to get me hooked!
The fact they gave fire emblem engage a 9 and this a 7 angers me lmfao
Not every new game needs to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes Mfs just wanna play a new game.
EXACTLY!!!! People fail to remember that some of their beloved franchises had the same formula for a few entries. This is only the second entry.
Team Asano's whole deal is NOT reinventing the wheel. You don't go to a Taylor Swift concert and expect her to perform Gangsta rap.
3:22 Hiroki? Wtf IGN, Hiroki?!
The game is voice acted, they have the pronunciation
worst thing a game reviewer could do... "just charged it through..."
This review was all over the place. Made it even more difficult for me to make a decision on buying the game..
Dont listen to this clown. Get it. Its amazing.
IGN reviews are not reliable source for reviews.
Don't let the review deter you, especially if it's from IGN. They've made several contradictions stating it's too similar from the first installment without mentioning its a standalone sequel, meaning you don't have to play the first one to get into the second one. Personally, the soundtrack and 3D rendering was enough to sell me on this game, mostly because I'm a big fan of the first Octopath game.
This game deserves more then a 7, you also didn’t mention the music and other things
Kind of an odd review. Seems like a bit of an outlier. 7 isn't a bad score by any means, but this seemed like an easy 8 minimum.
first game they give 9.3 i so confuse rating score from him bc everything this game do is better than first game
octopath is probably the best rpg this year and has one of the best soundtracks ever created. did he even play the game??
even if it were the same game with new story it will be awesome, but theres new functions and new charaters so is already amazing to me
The first was one of my favorite games of all time. Just fired up the demo and started with the huntress! Awesome opening, loving it! Surprised at the low rating here
7 is not a low rating??
@@WilliamChiarafor a game thats near 95% on steam yes its too low
@@Freestyle80 Whats the point of a review if they just parrot the consensus on a game
I' m sorry but did he say that the weakness system was a "new" feature to this game???
Reminds me of people skipping story in ffxiv and then complaining come back when you actually played the game
Ah, yes. Hiroki. Beset friends with Rain and Duncan.
Reviewers really should be professional enough to all follow the same criteria for every game that they review….
How does this get a 7, while the first game got a 9.3?
You are missing the point of reviews
@@KanalDerGutenSache No I’m really not
You can’t fix what’s not broken!
I’m grateful they are keeping this old school style
With Xenoblade, Tales of Series, Trails Series, and so many other JRPGs all going for the same 3D look, Octopath Traveler feels very refreshing. (I'm seriously getting 3D fatigued) Need more AAA JRPGs that uses this style!!
You can't fix what's not broken! But you can improve on it
It's 7 isn't it?
[EDIT]
...Omfg, it is... IGN - Never changes
Why can't we get a new Star Ocean in this style? Or even a Tales of Phantasia remake? 🤯
you didn't even mention the music. the final
boss has to be the best ost i've heard in any video game
My 3 hours of demo time flew by! Preordered
It's a shame the SE does not ship the Collector's edition to my country.
Hiroki Lol @3:22
2D 3D art style? 😂 idk why so many people struggle with remembering HD 2D
Nice! Looking forward to it. Mad the first one is leaving Gamepass this month too though
does 4 remaining non party member get expeirence too? in OT1 they only gains exp only in battle. that my issue in this game
its the same in this game too
Pretty sure there was a skill to give exp to idle party members
Can't remember if it was from the sage or merchant
Or neither. Been a while
Such a pretty game
Can’t wait to get it
Says this game doesn’t change enough, gives a 7.
Call of Duty changes nothing, gives a 9.
Different reviewers?
This looks a lot like Saga Frontier to me. Might have to give it a look.
I’m glad this is my first time around with it.
It will be my first time too. Tried the demo and thought it was pretty great.
Reminder to never take IGN reviews seriously especially when it comes to JRPG'S
Ahhh, the gold standard of ign reviews, the 7
They did improved the game immersive, characters calling others while in battle, before other characters just like 3 characteristics inside your mind, just like u are traveling on yr own.
Your review was really helpful was debating to get this or not
my gripe with the 1st game was the endgame, how about the 2nd one? are there endgame modes?
Dude can't even get the character's names right to his review is pretty meaningless
The like ratio never lies.
Hey IGN ever heard of the term “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”?
More games need cosy looking villages in them like this game.
Just got the platinum on my ps5. A solid 9.5 for me.
It seemed like you omitted some details in octopath traveler 2.
How’s the end game? Any extra dungeons etc?
Is there a way to sharpen the blurry backgrounds?
Are they going to release the first one on PS4 yet?
No, nintendo is involved with that and they rarely release the rights to other consoles.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. IGN giving a lower score because of this is pretty dumb.
Dropping from 9.3 to 7 seems harsh when you say it's more of the same high quality content lol
ok. but do the characters actually interact with eachother and their stories? or is it like the first game where they really dont
You know the review is crap when they don't even mention the music of the game
7? Are you serious?
Okay the first Octopath suffers so much from the lack of character interactions. Is it the same here?
Let's say it slightly improved. Battle interaction, Crossed path stories, Travel banter replays.
Much better your gonna love it!
Have to disagree with this review a lot. Also, his name is “Hikari”, not “Hiroki”.
This mistake in a fully voice acted game is so embarrassing lmao
a 7 ?!? For real, it's at least above an 8, and I'd give it a 9, and that's only from playing the Demo.
hoping for final fantasy tactics remake like this one T.T
My complaint is in handheld mode the print is too small.
A 7 for this game and some game as a service games having way higher note when they drop their development or road map and cancel the whole thing short after… that 7 is not right comparing to other games and notes. 😅
Oh great, another IGN review that manages to not only mispronounce characters names but give a lower score than the original despite being better in almost every single way. CLEARLY never learned their lesson from the Xenoblade DE review… 🤦♂️
Why would you not play the prologues, all of those stories also become connected in this game unlike the first
Im shocked they didnt say their usual "there is a little bit of everything for everyone"
How are you going to skip the characters stories in a game literally based on the characters stories💀
IGN back at it again with the inaccurate & crappy reviews!
7 is a piss poor score for this. It deserves an 8 at minimum. This guy was all over the place with his review
Congratulations. You got featured by videogamedunkey 😂
dont OD on that copium lmao
This is a piss poor JRPG. Play Tales or something
So what is the slightly retro rpg with a story line like an HBO drama?
Imagine if they made the next mainline Pokémon game like this.
Also it seems they put the true ending as extra stories rather than secret ending, less mysterious
True ending? Do you mean after you kill Galdera?
Really makes you feel like a traveler
This deserves way more than a 7
Ot1 was like a solid 8.5 and ot2 is nothing but improvements on a successful formula, probably going to be a 9.5 if its pulls through
Its not a COD.
@@EbefrenRevoDude, they haven’t given COD games high scores since Black Ops 3. That joke is way too dead.
you didnt talk about the ONE thing every complained about the first time. Is there more party interaction?
They have travel banter and shared missions.
Dude they dont even know hikaris name do u think they played long enough hahaha
yo whats up with youtubes 2 20secs unskippable ads?
7 is a new 7.
Really makes you feel like an Octopath Traveler
3:22 Did he just pronounce "Hikari" as "Hiroki"? smh
