Thanks for uploading this, it was extremely helpful as I knew of differing measurements according to years and printing style.
I didn't know we measure the frame not perforation edge size.
    It really has helped me

I recently found my stamp collection from 50 yrs ago, when i was 8. I knew absolutely nothing about stamps then, as I was just copying my big brother. I never realised how interesting they are until now. Thank you for this, I'm off with my ruler!

I've taken a known flat plate, inexpensive stamp, and cut the four corners edges off so I can lay it over another stamp to see if the frame lines up. It's a quick and easy way to distinguish between rotary and flat plate stamps.

I’m glad I found this... I have to find you on my account too, I found tons of stamps and postcards, used and covers and so on, from mid and late 1800’s up to the 60’s and some 70’s .. I have over 200 of the Washington and franklins green the reds and so on, trying to learn what is here.. so many to measure and check peers... I wish there was something where you just sit the stamp on and it is easier to see

Thank you! You have provided me with the means, on how to tell my McKinleys appart! There is conciderable difference in pricing! It is nice to know that I have stamps worth thousands instead of a few dollars! Invaluable insite were the mundane can tell the difference between Rotary & Press printing. Nowhere have I found anyone to explain the nuaunces between the types of printing as you have presented, quite clearly. I am imbarised that I had not figured it out in the past! I had always tried perf to perf and couldn't figure why it never came out as expected!! Thanks again!

First off let me say congrats on a terrific site!
But I have a 1923 Harding Black no. 490C type: FQ3 D: 2C which I believe to be rotary press however it is a perf. 11 but measures 19 1/4 x 22mm where others say it should measure
22 1/2 instead of just 22mm... is it still considered a rotary press? As you know if it were I'm sitting on $40 grand. So please could you help me out? Thank you and thanks again for just a great site really.

Look at the gum side, if there is even a slight bit of black ink that bled through it is the flat plate variety and worth a couple of bucks BUT if there is NO ink smudge on the gum side U got a winner.

What about no perfs on 2 edges on a 1 cent george stamp? Stuck on a postcard dated 1913. 12 and 13 perfs on the other sides.

    • @mallardstamps
      @mallardstamps  Před 3 lety +1

If there are no perfs on the edges then that’s called a horizontal perf stamp... it would be odd to have 12 and 13 perfs on the same stamp (no definitive Washington stamp has 13 perfs) so I would bet it’s a horizontal perf 12... but to know the real value you’ll need to see if it has a watermark or not!

Does Its mean anything on inverted surcharge ? Or its still up to which the stamp is ?
Example; 1½¢- deep yellow brown, ROTARY PRESS
Warren Harding SCOTT #582 Perf 10
    Inverted " EL MIRA N.Y. "
Some says: nothing special with that but Some else said: Recently sold at 45,000$
    Arrrrrrrrr .... so confuse sir
