    Hello again, great video I thought at first glance that you might have the elusive Stanley Gibbons listed 4d sage-green plate 17 which catalogues at £20,000 (Catalogue number 153). However your analysis was spot on, the key is the Watermark which puts the stamp into those issued between 1880-1883. The colour threw me a little (appears slightly green on my screen ?, however I have a sage green (plate 16) and the colour difference is marked. Your stamp has to be the 4d grey-brown and the plate number is 17, Stanley Gibbons number 160 catalogued at £80. The postmark is a squared circle and it is a very clean collectible copy.
    Thank you once again for an excellent video.

      I was hoping someone would notice that this stamp could be Scott #153 by just the appearance! Yeah this stamps color is a little off which is why I am also sending it in, who knows, might be slightly more rare than we think!

      @@mallardstamps The catalogue number I'm quoting is 153 from Stanley Gibbons. There is little or no correlation between Gibbons and Scott numbers. The watermark is the absolute with this stamp, the sage-green is watermarked with the Large Garter. The colour of your example could have been affected by aging, storage, moisture, soaking etc. Having said all that, it's a great video. They say that the UK and the USA are two great nations separated by one language, it looks like we could also be separated by two stamp catalogues. Please keep up the great work, I've been collecting for 50+ years and this channel is a must see.

      O my bad I thought you were referencing Scott! Admittedly I didn’t actually check before writing the last comment to make sure we were talking about the same stamp lol! If I had then I would have realized you were referencing another catalogue completely!

    I am glad that you did a video on this subject as many people have trouble identifying stamps including myself and often hope it is the most expensive stamp or rarest of any variation of stamp when in fact it is most likely the most common version that is defined by a watermark, perf size, color, flat press or rolling press, and other stuff too that is hard to differentiate. Thanks for all you do Daniel! You rock dude!

    It’s really important to remember that catalogue value is for perfect specimens. For used stamps, this means that it should have a light, pleasing postmark.

    A lot of the colors for GB stamps of this period are not color fast in that they may change slightly when soaked in water. I have one example of a stamp in which the entire design becomes blurred and almost unrecognizable because of the water soaking.

    So if you do this will you be able to get $62.50 for the stamp? I find that CV is much more than what people pay for stamps on eBay. Maybe instead of getting 1/10th CV you could get 1/3 CV or better... Never done this and I have no stamps that I know of that are worth sending in. But good to have this knowledge. Thanks for the video.

    Is this the only way to get certification? How about a licensed appraiser - certifier in California. Other than sending the stamps thru the mail. What about a stamp that is valuable say $15,000 Is the cost of certification 5%?

    Couple of questions.........What would they charge if the stamp is found to be a fake? APS should not charge as fee to a high dollar "fake" stamp. Is the fee schedule same for damaged stamps? I assumed that if you use an old stamp catalogue for stamp value, and the value has increased to present time, you will be invoiced for the difference in fees before you get the stamp back.

    • @mallardstamps
      @mallardstamps  Před 3 lety

      My guess is that if you sent a fake stamp on they would charge you the minimum amount... I’m sure that question is answered in the fine print somewhere on their site if you are super interested! Also I assume for damaged stamps the APS would still go off of catalogue value

    • @mallardstamps
