  • How to Replace BMW B+ BST Battery Safety Terminal on ANY BMW such as 3 series 5 series Z4M E85 E86 X1 X3 X5
    If your BMW won’t start after an accident or after a minor “bump” event, such as hitting a kerb, then there is a good chance that the battery safety terminal that is fitted onto the B+ positive terminal of your battery has triggered.
    Of course, if a BMW DTC code has been triggered, which has resulted in the SRS airbag warning light coming on, then this will be clear.
    I highly recommend the Creator C110+ Fault Code Reader for clearing your BMW airbag light (Once you have fixed the fault) - Costs $45 / £48 and will SAVE you that much the first time you use it!
    UK link: amzn.to/3qamVLg
    USA link: amzn.to/3gHK9Db
    BUT in many cases, even when an airbag light hasn’t come on, it is still possible that the BST has blown.
    IN THIS VIDEO - I will go through the symptoms of a blown BST and show you how to check yours, so that you can be sure that it has activated. I will then cover two possible fixes!
    1) How to do a Temporary “Get you home fix”
    2) How to replace the BST with a good condition used part and save yourself money!
    In this video, the car featured was a BMW Z4M coupe E86. However, this information should be relevant for the following cars (probably plus many more too!), your battery may just be in a different location and the shape of your positive battery terminal connection may look slightly different.
    BMW 3 series E46 and E90
    BMW 5 series E60 and F10
    BMW 6 series E63 and E64
    BMW Z4 E86, E86 and E89
    BMW 1 series E82 and E88
    BMW X1 E84, X3 E83, X5 E70 and X6 E71
    PLEASE NOTE: For the permanent fix mentioned above, especially if your airbag light is on, you really need to check the SRS system using a diagnostic tool such as BMW V57 DIS software or a BMW specific fault code reader. There is a chance that the trigger signal is still in place (for example from the front bumper) and if you replace the BST, it might just blow again. If your airbag light isn’t on then the chances are good that the BST blew due to a one-off trigger, therefore you SHOULD be able to go ahead and replace it but I STILL highly recommend that you check for codes first.

      @ReviveMyRide  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi, to separate the two parts of the cable at the BST, you have to pry open the black plastic housing (which I assume you've done already) and then you need to lever the two sections apart. 04:45 in the video shows this, you may need to lever at different positions all around the edges. I kept the original positive cable from the BST to the car and just replaced the clamp and BST part where it goes onto the battery. Hope that helps! Cheers, Phil

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi @romero10374 In theory, the event that triggered your BST was a one off event (impact) that was detected by the sensors. Therefore, you should be ok to fit a new BST and it will only trigger again if there is another "event", so yes, you should be ok to do this. Note that I said should a few times, I've never tried this! 😀 Later on, if you decide to do some repairs (hammering, removing panels etc), it's a good idea to disconnect the battery to prevent a false trigger. Hope this helps. Thanks, Phil

    What did u mean at the end the risk of blowing it if u air bag light is on while u replaced it... should i clear the code and then shut the car off disconnect and replace?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, I think it's important to make sure that the original trigger resolved and cleared. So, for example, if you had a minor bump and it blew the BST (or triggered and airbag), check the fault codes with a decent OBD scanner to make sure the original fault is cleared. Of course, the BST itself won't clear until you replace it but there shouldn't be anything else showing on the SRS system. This isn't a huge risk as normally airbag & bst triggering is a momentary detection (that isn't permanent) from the sensors. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

The video is aimed at people that do have a BST and it is preventing their car from operating properly. If your car starts and runs ok, I’m not sure I would try to retrofit a BST into it. Do I have to clear any codes for this to work ?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před 2 lety

      I'm not 100% sure tbh. Because I had the equipment to do so, I went and cleared the code straight away. Sometimes, just correcting the fault is enough, the item will start working (In this case the BST) and the code will sit in the background unless cleared (which is no big deal). Other times, the code needs to be cleared for the system to start working again. If I was going to guess based on my prior experience, I would say that you need to clear the code. This can easily be done with a BMW specific fault code reader: czcams.com/video/Xk5AtAtoV_k/video.html or with a cable and software on a laptop: czcams.com/video/Fkon2rxijs0/video.html Hope that helps! If you replace the BST and the car still has persistent airbag light on due to being in accident, will the BST blow again? Or do you have to fix all the airbags before you can replace BST?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi that’s a good question! In my situation, the car had been all fixed and I just had the BST to do. In theory, it is the “trigger” of the event that sets off the airbag & BST not the airbag light / fault code. So, as long as you don’t get another trigger event, then you should be ok to replace the BST even if the airbag light is ok. However, please get a second opinion, as I haven’t had the exact situation your described, any friendly car body shop should be able to answer. Thanks, Phil

      @@fedorov5549 Hi, yes, initially as a "temporary fix" I opened up the BST cover (as shown in the video), cleaned up and pushed the battery terminal connections back together again and then drilled a small hole in the metal clamp so that i could put a self tapping screw in to hold it together (although tbh it is a tight fit, so would probably just stay together on its own). And then, as you suggested, I unplugged the airbag wire. However please note: Your entire airbag system may not work and in the event of an accident, your battery will not automatically disconnect. I weighed up both of these things but I also have some older cars that don't have airbags or battery disconnects, so I was often driving in exactly this type of circumstance anyway! Just be mindful of other passengers that you may have in the vehicle, you could be comfortable and aware of the risks, but they may / would not be? Hope this helps! Phil

      Hi, By "witness" I think you mean the fault code? And your problem is that it won't clear even after you fix the BST. First, please double check that the fault code you are trying to clear is for the BST, it should say something like "Safety Battery Terminal" and not some other problem on the car. If your fault code is for the safety battery terminal and it won't clear, even with a new BST installed, then the most likely cause is that the wiring is different on the connector as shown at 05:02 in the video or it isn't plugged in properly. btw, here is a video on how to clear the fault if it helps you: czcams.com/video/Fkon2rxijs0/video.html Hope that helps! • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před rokem

      @jayserna1989 That's the tricky part! BMW (pretty much in acknowledgment of the issue) sell kits for most of their models but they are expensive! In the video, I try to show you have to get a good result for less money. So what you need to do is take a picture of your BST, then go up to your computer and search for BMW BST / battery safety terminal on Ebay. Sift through the results and look for one that looks like yours. Maybe initially include your exact model in the search, for example: BMW 3 series E46 BST and maybe you''ll get lucky and find one exactly the same as yours. Take note of the small (usually yellow) electrical plug that connects to the BST from your car, these do change in design across models and it is a lot easier if you buy a replacement BST that has the exact same plug. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Před rokem

      Hi, sorry for the slow reply! Just away for a cheeky holiday 😉 There are quite a few things that can cause that. No.1 is a poor connection where the red wire is bolted down: if it is loose or if there is any corrosion at all then there can be more electrical resistance, which leads to heat. That is what I would check first. It may not be easy to tell now that it is melted but when fitting the new one, ensure the terminal is super clean and nipped up tight. Worth checking all other electrical mounting points in the area positive and negative (because a poor earth can also cause the problem, even though it isn’t the earth cable that has melted). Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

      Yes, you can just connect direct to the battery. Another downside of the BST is that if you have a minor bump or hit a curb, it can trigger and if you stop the car, it won't start again! A lot of modern cars don't even have a BST but of course, it is a safety feature, so it's down to personal choice.
