This was one of those songs that everybody sang along with especially at the bridge. Even 50 years later I find myself singing along.
This was when the Doobies were at their best (before the MIchael Mc Donald era). They were a straight up rock band with great group singing.
This song was their very first hit, but this performance is from a concert after Tom Johnson regained his health. This concert also has a great version of "The Doctor".
This is the ONE song that I have been wanting Home Free to do. If only just the breakdown at the end. Imagine it, flawless 5 part harmony. Maybe one day.
How do we convince them to do it? I'm sure it would be awesome.
Me, too! At least they did "Listen to the Music"!!! 🎶 ❤
This was constant radio play mid 70's. So many hits for the Doobies and with Michael McDonald.
I am 71 now and I saw them live twice once in an NFL stadium. We were allowed to take in an 8- gallon keg with a wash tube and Ice. The ticket price was eight dollars. Great times.
I'm so glad I grew up with this music it takes me back to my childhood and I am 58yrs old
Their great music began in my college years and continued from there. Some bands change their set lists every concert. Alice Cooper does this because he has such a large library of hits. Love this live performance and your reaction, Maggie.
Always good to hear the Doobie Brothers. Can’t get enough of it
This song hit the top of the Billboard chart the day after I was born. When I decided to get lyrics tattooed to my forearm, I pulled from this song. "And I ain't got no worries, 'cause I ain't in no hurry at all."
This is my most favorite Doobie Brother song. I grew up on the 70's music
Love anything Doobie Brothers but this song is their BEST. Maggie I love how into the music you're listening to you get.
The guy in the middle is Tom Johnston, who a couple of my sisters went to high school with, and his brother used to live next door to me.
Absolutely one of my favorite songs! there's something just soothing to the soul with this one!
This song was a mood changer-- like a lucky charm when it came on the radio back when! 😎
Just saw them in Hawaii over a year ago...man, they're great as ever! It was terrific seeing young people there, like our 3 boys. IMUA Doobie Brothers! 🤙The 70s were the BEST decade of music ever!
We got to do this in choir my senior year. Added it to our concert. So much fun! 1975!
I appreciate your choice to review live performances. The studio albums are pristine, but there’s an immediacy and realness to the live performances that cannot be replicated.
Someone is missing from this performance. I think it's whoever would normally sing bass or baritone. There's a more prominent bass vocal part in the harmony sections that is part of the studio recording. It adds a necessary foundation, more depth and complements the rhythm.
I don’t think Michael McDonald was on this version. I listened to another version with him on it and I could tell the difference.
It's Michael McDonald' !!
Actually, Tiran Porter, their long time bass player, handled the bass and baritone vocals on the studio version. He retired from the band.
Tiran for sure.
Tom and Tiran shared the bottom end vocal portion of the acapella in the studio version, long before MM was in the band.
I love this band, there's not a day that goes by that I don't play at least one of their songs.
My very favorite Doobie Bros. song, and that's saying a lot, and probably in my top 15 favorite songs. With all the different change ups and the use of fiddle (not violin), harmonica, and even the clapping makes it one of the songs with best groovy feel to it. Also, the content is much like my youth, homemade rafts, catfish jumping around, being out on the water all night long. Now you need to hear the studio album cut to hear the full sound.
classic Doobies!
Big hit. Although the Mississippi is male; it will always be Old Man River.
Hi Maggie. While I agree with you about the set sheets, I have to say that sometimes (especially in the 70s lol) some of the entertainers may have had a 2nd sheet reminding them what city they were in!! Nice reaction btw. Love your energy, Stay safe and well!
Great classic
Love the Doobies! I did a little research on them one time, learning that they used two drummers in the early days (as did the Funk Brothers).
People should check out The Doobies "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" and "Another Park Another Sunday". Both great songs!
I like this one.
Glad you did the live version which is much better than the original which is played way slower with a more sedated vibe.
The Doobies were notable as one of the very few bands that had two full trap drum sets rockin' the band in the '70's and beyond. Only other prominent band that comes to mind is the Allman Brothers Band. Any others?
I saw them on my birthday in 2000! 🤓
I've lost track of the number of times I've seen these guys. Always a great time.
Now you need to go back and listen to the earlier days of this song
Maggie, i bought this album in 70s..... my car radio had a problem with rear speakers & since this is recorded in stereo w/ split sound that is not put out on each speaker, I never heard the whole song.
Mostly just heard parts of "harmony".... like at around 7:35 - 7:45 word like "I wanna Honkytonk" was all of this song I heard for almost 6 months.
You should check out the same concert China Grove. A totally different experience !
I have loved The Doobies since the 70's and finally saw them live in Melbourne, Australia with Santana in April 2017
The white pieces of paper on the floor are the set list
The Doobies used huge rolling papers.
Thanks! Don't need studio tricks and a dozen takes to sound good. When you can do it live you've got something.
Exactly!! I can't wait to record my own music. Thanks so much for your support! 💖🐶🙏🏻
I don't know if you've done this or not. ''As the years go passing by'' by Eric Burdon and the Animals. It's a long version of the classic blues song and, in my opinion, one of the best. I appreciate that you are a professional singer reacting. Not really a big fan of watching people watching videos but it has made me rediscover some songs that I didn't pay as much attention as I could have. I'm 74 so 14 when The Beatles arrived in my life and changed it. I worked with musicians for many years. Anyway, keep up the good work. Not many I look at. You're one of them.
Hey Maggie I would like to suggest china grove for your next Doobie brothers song. Take care y'all
The Doobies had two fine songwriters and singers in Tommy Johnston and Pat Simmons. This is a Pat Simmons song and personally, he was absolutely my favorite. Loved his writing and his singing. They had so many hits!
If you liked this, you will love the group Little Big Town.
BOONDOCKS is just what you need to hear. I promise you no disappointment.
And then, loosen up your hips to Brooks and Dunn and swing them to the infectious rhythm of PLAY SOMETHING COUNTRY.
Keep going and enjoy
Set lists are common but we also used "cheat sheets" for our peddles used for certain songs. Great group and their best song. Thank you for your reaction.
classic song grew up with this on radio or in the workplace
The white piece of paper is the play list
Ah the music of my youth! I was just out of high school when this was first released in 1974. The original was recorded without Michael McDonald which is why the harmonies sound a little different to me. He joined in 1975. I’ve primarily heard it performed with him doing harmony. You can always hear him whenever he’s in the mix.
The Doobies are an awesome band. There is such diversity in their music. Lots of pop of course but some blues and light rock built in there too. McDonald took over a lot of their leads until he left the band. He has a very distinctive voice. Their songs like Minute by Minute, What a Fool Believes, Listen to the Music, China Grove are all classics.
Hi @magglereneemusic. Please do a reaction video on singer Sydnie Christmas from Britain's Got Talent. The order of her songs are Tomorrow, My Way, and Over the Rainbow. I really like to hear your opinion. ☺
I do hope you react to Takin It to The Streets. A great song.
Love the Doobie Brothers!! Can you react to Suite: Judy Blues Eyes by Crosby Stills Nash and Young…
Old Man--William Faulkner (short story)
👍❤️❤️
Sorry to go off topic but in a reaction to "loney day" from soad, everything in that video is on fire because Daron, who sings that song, brother died in a fire 😔
Dear Maggie você trouxe Luciano Pavarotti ele é pra mim o maior e melhor Tenor já existente. Você pode trazer dele Miss Sarajievo? Você vai se emocionar. 😘😘😘🌹🌹🌹
I know you've done a reaction or two to Sarah Brightman... But I have not seen a reaction to her performance in the film Repo the Genetic Opera....Would really enjoy that
dancing music
Look up their early stuff 1970-1975 or so. It sharper and harder hitting.
play New Riders of the Purple Sage. Even had Jerry Garcia for a time
In this live version you can't really hear the call and response between the violin (it's a viola in the studio version) and the guitar.
Like to make a request for a mother and son duet cover rise up by Jordan Rabjohn they really good please its a feel good song
Thank you for your support. Here is the info on how to request a video reaction:www.maggierenee.com/book-me/sponsor-a-reaction-live
Please listen to the studio version. So much better. The bass singer seems to be missing. Their line up did change over the years.
Can you please react to some Mark Chesnutt? Ill Think of Something or Almost Goodbye? Thanks!
Set lists
You have to react to paradise city by guns n roses you will be shocked
Just in case you were curious, none of the Doobie Brothers are actually brothers.
Not the live version.
The studio version sounds a lot better.
A song written by a non-fisherman. Catfish don't jump.
As good as this sounds the original video sounds way better plus I believe that Michael McDonald is missing and that definitely makes it sound better !!
Terrible rendition. It's so much better in studio. Give it a listen.
