As one of the kids who hung out in front of Motown as a teen. It was just plain magical to be there. The love was given to everyone. Even me. Privileged to be next to Russ Terrana in the sound booth when Tammi Terrell sang, ain't no mountain high enough, in first take. Tammi made me her good luck person. When Tammi wasn't there. Martha Reeves was my Motown mom. Had to earn my keep. Also they drove me home. I cleaned the building, polished brass, did windows in and out. But Motown is my home. Everyone there my family.

Not only one of the greatest Motown recordings, but one of the greatest recordings of all time. There’s not enough Motown reaction videos.
The Motown Sound is so distinct! The soul music made a huge jump into mainstream radio play because of it. And this is probably one of the best examples to react to because of it's smooth soul sound and use of voice and instrumental arrangements. Thank you Maggie for the reaction, and Mike for the suggestion.
Absolute classic. Grew up listening to the Motown sound. This song is just timeless. Sounds as amazing today as it did back then. Great choice, Mike. Great reaction, Maggie. And always fun to revisit your San Francisco streams.

From back when recording did not involve a zillion takes and endless processing, when artists came to the studio already fully rehearsed and you might put a song in the can in an afternoon. When talent counted more than technology.

@@firestriker3580 In 1965, groups did not get to spend days and days in the studio on a song. Time was too valuable. Revenues from singles was much more than from albums. And there simply was not very much processing available. A 4 track recorder was a big deal. Not until the Beatles and the Stones did that sort of thing start to come along. And even Sgt. Pepper was done on 4 tracks.

James Jamerson (one of the greatest bass players to have ever lived in my opinion) played the bass with 1 finger because he got his start on the upright bass where he played with only 1 finger
I am from Detroit and love this song. You can see Smokey Robinson in the background at the beginning of the video. What this reminds me of is how happy people were back then. Just look at the part when the guys are dancing. It was just too cool. Man i miss those days. Great video.

Ah, the music of my youth! Thanks Maggie for reacting to this old school music. Brings back some very, very old memories. No easy access to music in those days. You either heard it on the radio or TV or bought the record or album. Totally different world in many ways. Too bad some people are trying to drag the country back to the worst parts of back then. I lived through it, it was awful. The discrimination, the censorship to mention a few things I don't need to relive. I'm too old to go back out on the protest walks. We got some things changed and reverting back to it would be a crime IMO. Sorry for the soap boxing. Old music brings up old habits.
This is a song that transcends all age groups. Such a happy feel good song. I remember seeing them in the 60’s on the Ed Sullivan show with my parents.

Back in the day everyone I knew loved these groups.
This as you see is a film of The Temptations recording the song. In background when David Ruffin says "I've got sunshine", you can see the writer, Smokey Robinson over David's right shoulder. Now that you've finally gotten to listen to a little Motown, how about reacting to Smokey Robinson and The Miracles doing their live and in black and white version of their "Ooh Baby Baby", from around 1965. There you get to really see how Smokey performed with that incredible voice, which is one of the prettiest in the history of R&B/R&R, while both engaging the audience and interpreting his great lyrics.
This aggregation of Temptations is considered the "Classic 5" with David Ruffin singing lead (his first one with the group). The Temptations are also known for the fact that every single one sings lead, not just David. I would recommend " You're My Everything" that features Eddie Kendricks, the first tenor with David singing a short verse and "Just Another Lonely Night", that features their stellar baritone, Paul Williams, "Old Man River" which features the basso profundo Melvin Franklin and, finally, "Don't Send Me Away", lead by Otis Williams, second tenor and the sole remaining original founding member of the Temptations. The Temptations were the very first Motown group to win a Grammy for "Cloud Nine", have been showcased in a television series based on Otis Williams autobiography "The Temptations" are still being presented throughout the world in the form of an Emmy-Award winning Broadway Musical called " Ain't Too Proud" and in 2024, the Temptations, with Otis Williams, are still touring and selling out venues all over the world!

In Detroit, this is the music I grew up to. Notice the fine clothes and choreography. At the beginning (behind the lead singer) you see a man (with headphones on) that's Smokey Robinson.

Great Motown time. Grew up with it. The Temp[tations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder etc. The wonderful Sixties. Great that you react on it. And indeed, most singers in that time did dance on their songs and had a orchest on the background. A harmonic music period.
It's how Motown did it from 59 to around 67 .... 4 mikes, placed strategically, and just get a good stereo mix--the musicians / singers would do the rest, and it was a great clean, "Live" sound that even made the records jump more.( When the 8-track recorders came out tin '68, The label went psychedelic, and the Tempts got even bigger with that sound) Weird how today's music, with a gazillion dollars of production gear, can't get results like that.

A gorgeous song, so well done by one of the greatest of all the vocal groups.
Noting your comment, Maggie, about wishing it were longer, that's exactly the point. It hearkens back to the old vaudeville adage to always leave your audience wanting more. Songs were shorter for radio play restrictions but also to feel like they ended too soon. It made the audience want to hear it again. Most modern songs aren't really any longer, lyrically. They're just padded out with an appalling amount of repetition that, by the end of the song, you've heard enough. A two minute song that outstays its welcome for another three or four minutes.
Songs from this era got to the point, added some instrumental moments and got off the stage. We just wanted to hear it again.

Lead singer was David Ruffin. The band fired him for missing rehearsal and performances regularly due to drug use. Over time all the members were replaced creating a Tribute Band.

If someone asks me to play the best pop song ever done, this is what they are getting.
The Temptations had so many great hits that I remember growing through my teens and twenties with, songs like, "Get Ready" "Just My Imagination" "I Wish It Would Rain" "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" "Ain't Too proud To Beg" just a few to be going on with.
Of course there were many other great Motown acts but, I don't think any topped the Temptations.
When we were in High School we couldn't wait until evening when the Detroit radio stations would turn their transmitters towards Windsor, Canada and we could pick up Motown in the Akron area. One of the guys was gifted with "soul finger" that could invariably find a Motown song on the radio.

Maybe the most beloved of all Motown hits, written by one William Robinson, Jr., a.k.a. Smokey.
Apparently you didn’t notice, he wasn’t using his thumb at all, just one finger! He was the greatest of all at!
In that era, there were plenty of Male and Female groups like this. If you like this sound, you should check out The Drifters. "Under the Boardwalk" and "Up on the Roof".

The Temptations were the pinnacle of these 50's singing groups. They were the best of the best and my all time favorite. You should hear them sing their other greatest hit called "AIN'T TOO PROUD TO BEG". It's more up tempo and blows your mind hearing it sung by their lead singer DAVID RUFFIN. He killed it on that song. It'll make you want to sing along and shout and move your feet every time. Check it out when you get a chance you wont be disappointed.

The dude singing second was one of the first musicians to really go off the rails publicly with drugs, mostly blow. He O. D.'d & died a few years after this came out. Think his name was Terry Ruffin.

I'm the bassist/singer in a local 60s/70s band in S.E. Florida. I sing this song, but because I'm a baritone I have to take it down a step(Bb/C). I announce it by saying "this song's introduction features... ME!" Then I start the bass part. If we have dancers-we always do-we go back to the top. Fun song; always gets a reaction.

Motown's most popular male group, formed from two earlier outfits, the Primes and the Distants. Truckload of hits over the years. I think Otis Williams is the only original member left.
You owe it to yourself to check a modern cover of this song by a group called Blacktop Mojo. The vocalist of this band is amazing and totally gives the song a much darker and more chilling vibe.

Growing up …. Near miles from Detroit in the 60’s … Detroit was the epicenter of music …Motown was number one in the country if not the world … I was lucky enough to hear most of this ear era music first hand …
This is probably the most famous song of Motown...it was written as sort of answer song to the previous 1964 hit sung by Mary Wells "My Guy" which was written and produced by Smokey Robinson. My Girl, Written and produced by the Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, became the Temptations' first U.S. number 1 single.
The dancing segment is from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand broadcast every Saturday & was the only opportunity most teenagers got to see popular artist & the latest dance trends.

ive forgotten more about Motown but specifically the Temptations than most people will ever know lol. i highly suggest watching the movie about them. Leon (the black man in Madonna's like a Prayer) absolutely is the closest we could ever get to having another David Ruffin.

i was born in Detroit in the 60's so this music is in my soul Detroit the town and Motown the sound so let us get down.
Motown was a hit factory who promoted primarily singers and vocal groups. The music for these vocal groups was provided by a group of a dozen or so musicians who were basically the studio band. When Barry Gordy started the label, he sent his people out to look for the best jazz and blues musicians they could find. Once found, they were signed to what were supposed to be what Gordy considered to be exclusive contracts with Motown.They referred to themselves as the Funk Brothers and played on more #1 hits than Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles COMBINED! There's a documentary about them and their adventures titled "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" that is well worth a couple hours of your time to watch.

Others you might want to check out are “Duke of Earl” by Gene Chandler and “In the Still of the Night” by the Five Satins. Chandler sounds more like Motown than the Five Satins - his vocal control is astounding.
The Five Satins were a Do Wop group, so it’s different than the Motown Sounds, but the lead singer, Fred Paris, has an amazing voice. Enjoy!
I was born in the 50s raised in the 60s and partied in the 70s. We had the best music and the fastest car ever.
