Danish National Simphony Orchestra, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - absolutely stellar rendition. That's what to react to next.
If you want an emotional sing, Iris Dement- My Life
Several generations of childhood. Grew up with this song, still brings tears
Like many I am sure it was from my childhood. My Dad loved it and sang it to me and my sister
Don't worry girl, a 58 year man is again misty eyed again. 😊
I'm 71 and this brings back so many great memories. Thanks Maggie
I’m 70 & this was a major part of my childhood!💜💜💜
I agree. Wholesome songs like this aren't made anymore. 😢
I was born in 63 so this song has been my life from birth. ❤
I’m 67 and I absolutely loved to hear them sing this. It’s a great song
I'm 71 and I listened to this as a child. I've never heard this particular rendition before and I was crying. You need to listen to "500 miles" by this group because it is so moving. The 60's had everything from folk, to folk-rock, to synthesizers, to hard rock and the beginnings of metal. I still miss the "Leslie" amplified speakers on the organs of the 60's. The peculiar warble of that amplified speaker is beautiful to my ears.
This song still makes me cry. Such an honest look at the loss of a child's innocence. ❤
I know I am not the only one crying. 😥😥😥 I am 67, I had the 45 and listened to it for hours.
I still have it on original double album vinyl
I remember being about 5 and crying my eyes out because Puff was so sad. And now I'm old and the truth of the song still remains. No more tears though, as Puff is alive and well, and mighty as ever. Great post.
I'm 67. This has been one of my favorite songs
In the live performances I have watched, Yes us older folks know the lyrics, but it was surprising the number of our children knew them, and how many of their children at least knew the chorus. This song never gets old.
Stookey wrote "The Wedding Song", to which many couples have been married over the years.
He is now to be among you
at the calling of your hearts.
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
for whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is love
There is love
This was played at my Wedding. People were in tears, especially those who never heard it before.
This song came out the year I was born and I still love it to this day. Folk music of the 60's was more than just protest or country style music, but some of the best story songs ever written and sung.
I had the EP and the cover had a puzzle of Puff on it. I’m now 63 yo and still cry when I hear this. My absolute favourite in my kiddy years.
Millions of people grew up to this song i loved it as a kid and still do as a soon to be 49 year old man. this song first came out in 1963.
Puff, the Magic Dragon" (or just "Puff") is a song written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary from a poem by Leonard Lipton. Yes for us older folks tis can be powerful, and yet heartbreaking all at the same time. I'm 68, a former school music teacher, and now, after this, I know for sure Maggie Renee is the REAL DEAL, and an old heart deep inside....she needs to sing to us more and get it out there.
Thank you very much for this. I am 80 I have tears down my cheeks. They had so much wonderful music.
Those three made magic for a lot of us. That was not their only popular song.
Mugs all around. ❤ This is the childhood of so many of us.
I was surprised how good the audience was.
My generation was the proudly the first to witness this magic. My Mom had the album. I'll have to dig, but I may still have it. So glad so many kids have been blessed by this song.❤. Blessings sweetie. Grandma Shirley out ❤
I’m 57. Big part of my childhood too. Brilliant reaction.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
This made me so happy. I had a huge smile on my face for the entire song!
Still my favorite P.P.&M song of all times and I was NOT a child when it came out. In fact the oldest of them, the late Mary Travers is only 7 yrs older than me.
‘78 born here and I remember seeing this performed several times as a kid on tv. So pure and brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you Maggie
'62 born here... my ENTIRE life... and I got to meet PP&M... they were EXACTLY as you would expect... but when you listen to them, remember there is a 4th, very important musician... Dick Kniss... the ever present, behind the scenes bassist...
He also played bass for John Denver.
@@bradsouthers7476 Why yes he did!!
Wow, wow, wow that is my childhood - and a great showcase of talent, pure and unaltered. Voices, instruments and the audience. We have lost so much in our digital, manipulated, autotuned world. Love this.
Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers put a young singer-songwriter named Robert Zimmerman on the map with their version of "Blowin' In The Wind". Bob D. had written it in 1962; it was on his second album.
Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in 1961. They had a lot of great hits such as "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In" etc.
They also recorded Early Morning Rain a song penned by the late lamented Gordon Lightfoot.
This song came out when I was a child and it was magical back then and it’s still magical today. Beautiful song.
Why does it make us cry when we listen to this? Such a simple innocent story, and it's beautiful.
I was 7 years old when this came out - one of my favorite songs of all time. Other songs of theirs I grew up with are: "Where have all the flowers gone", "The Lemon Tree", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", and "Blowin in the Wind".
❤ I'm 65. I just teared up, big time. 🥲
I still remember watching the cartoon as a kid. Brought back fond memories
Many years ago I saw them in concert when they played a benefit in Oklahoma City for recovery after the federal building bombing. What I didn't know was the benefit was partly coordinated by a family friend, and he invited us to go backstage afterwards to meet these wonderful performers. It was one of the best days ever.
My first concert was Peter, Paul and Mary in the round. I will never forget it.
It's always a good day when the artists encourage audience participation.
Such a nice trip down memory lane.
That was performed at their 25th anniversary concert. Download the entire concert for their greatest songs.
I was fortunate to see Peter, Paul and Mary live in concert at the college I attended and they were wonderful. That was somewhere around 1963 if my memory is still functioning. This song touched and involved the audience just like we are watching here.
Second time I have seen her speechless.
Thing is, this song wasn't part of my childhood, but listening to it, it was. It just has that quality.
I was 9 and had the measles when this song hit number 1 on the charts; can remember hearing it over and over on the little portable radio in my bedroom and loving it every time.
Saw them live twice. Love them.
This is the first time I ever teared up listening to this song. Realizing just how old ai am . Grieving the loss of my innocence I guess.
Peter and Paul lived up to the old saying "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't." And poor Mary saying "Now boys "
WOW Mr Peppermint use to sing this song often on the TV show back in the 60's and early 70's. LOVE THIS reaction. Can you also do This Land Is Your Land and Blowin In the Wind by these three??????
I served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive & would watch "Puff, the Magic Dragon" rain down bright red tracer fire at night. "Puff" was the name given to the original AC-47 (DC-3) gunship & then used generically to refer to all AC-47 gunships. Many of the USO bands entertaining the troops would play the song.
I learned this song as a young child just a year or two after it was first released. Now that I'm old enough to understand it's true meaning, it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Damn who's peeling onions! Thank you Maggie.
I love them telling the story about how this was misconstrued to be a song about drugs. People can take anything and turn it into a “hidden meaning” meant to brainwash us all. This is just a beautiful song. Still makes me cry after 60 years. Thanks for showing it. ❤❤
I was so lucky to know Paul working on the Eugene McCarthy campaign in 1968, and in later years was fortunate enough to see them in concert with backstage passes several times when they toured colleges.
I can't believe I actually cried.😭
I love this song so much it always reminded me of my dad. I miss you dad. Father and son forever and always ❤
It's funny because I'm 24 and I would watch my father cry to this song almost every night it's been a staple in my life and I hope it does the same for everyone beautiful song
That whole video concert is just gold. Brings tears to me when I hear them as they were such a treasure and remind me of the brief folk music scene of the early sixties.
Watched this in the 80's , glad to see again. I also grew up with this song.
I don't know why I still cry over this song Love it
If I had a time machine I'd go to a PP&M concert around 1963 or 64.
I LOVE this song! I used to swing to this in my back yard as a child! Not that I can sing! lol!
I remember playing their albums when I was a kid in the early 1960s.
I would imagine that this is the dream of any performer. To have an entire audience literally in the palm of your hand.
When you are soo good at what you do, and do it with love and respect for the audience this happened.
This song peaked at no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. So, it was a major hit.
It was a pleasure watching you expression during that.
Love that he spoke up and solved the mystery of what it’s about!!
All of us originals knew it was an innocent song about childhood and nothing more!!👍
This song means a lot to me because my sister would sing it to me when I had a bad dream or was afraid. I always have tears when this song is being played either on the radio or on CZcams.
I sang to my son at bedtime, at the end I'd sing, boom boom, and Alex would say no boom booms dad. I saw them perform while I attended college, never forget the power in her voice! Peace from Northern Michigan.
Such an awesome song. So frickin' full of emotion. I grew up singing this. Even as a teenager, I had no problem singing this song, especially sitting around a campfire up in the canyons as we cooked stiff in Dutch oven and made S'mores and we were teenagers. Such magical memories
When I was 15, the TV show came out and my family watched it, all 11 of us.
Then when I became a daddy, I sang this song to my boys, only had sons, when it came night night time. Bought the book to read to them while on trips or at bed time. Wore the book out. The boys memorized the story and took turns "reading" the book to each other. The also wore out the VCR.
After my second divorce, when I got my two youngest sons on the weekends, they were 3 and 4, I would take a couple of daughters of a single mom along, and spent Saturdays doing things with them. First thing they wanted to do when the got in the minivan was put the DVD in and listened to "PtMD", "Witch Doctor" by the Cartoons, and "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha" several times. Sidenote: I blubbered walking each girl down the aisle, I became their step-in dad.
Now their kids sing those songs and everybody joins in, except the "Ha Ha" song. My exes and the girls" mum still think I was sick to teach them that song when they were young.
Maggie, thank you so much for bring back those memories. ❤
The kid next door had this on a 45, we would listen to this, Beatles and a wide variety of songs
So many memories from childhood. These songs will live forever there and so glad it's still relevant😢😂❤
OH HOW I LOVE THE CARTOON THATS BRINGS THIS TO LIFE ..THANK YOU FOR THIS FLASHBACK TO MY CHILDHOOD 😭❤
I watched the 25th PP&M anniversary special on KQED when it aired live as a child with my parents and younger brother. All of us either sat transfixed or sang throughout the entire duration!
Irish Rovers 'The Unicorn' and 'Wasn't that a Party"
I'm another one, I'm 65, this was a favorite when I was much younger, this brought a tear, or two
They did a lot of lovely songs in the 60s beautiful folk singers
This song has been around for so long that the first generation to hear it is now playing it for their great-grandchildren. YES, it has been that long. And they all still love it. It hits one way when you are 5 and totally different when you are 35. So many memories and emotions.
In case you don't know, when "Puff the Magic Dragon" was originally released, some thought it was a drug culture reference. All you have to do is listen to the final verse, it's about growing up and putting childhood behind. If you ever wondered where the overall plot of "Toy Story" came from, it's the same idea.
Aah the memories this song brings back ! This song is a timeless masterpiece in my mind.
This seemed to really touch you. Thanks for letting us see your pure heart.
I got goosebumps too - and I was born in 1941.
I knew this songs as teen not as kid, but I love it, and feel always sad for the Dragon, but also love that explain how fast a child grow, and the days of innocence are very little
I love this song, I cry every time I hear it, but love it.
Oh, and I was born in 1943 so I was 20 when this came out and it became a staple for my three daughters and me to sing at bedtime.
I was a kid when this came out. I am 66 now and I still sing it when I am at home with only my dogs and cat in the house. My hens don't care for this song . When this was released I was in Kindergarten in Oklahoma City back then. That was also the year President Kennedy died. My Aunt and Uncle got married that night. My Uncle died last month.
So wonderful! Grew up with them and had the pleasure of seeing them multiple times at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. They were magic! So miss them.
My wife and I saw PP&M around this time. It was incredible. Great concert.
This was absolutely beautiful! So many wonderful memories.
The first time i can remember hearing this was in 1963 when i was 7yrs old and it was played on the kids show Captain Kangaroo.
Thanks! The lyrics are a poem written by Lenny Lipton, originally inspired by an old poem by Ogden Nash about a dragon and a pirate. The music was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary. Yarrow and Lipton have always shared the songwriter royalties. I am very happy that you enjoyed this so much. 😃
I LOVED this!! And THANK YOU so much for not only bringing this wonderful video to the channel, as many people are enjoying it like we all did, but also for so generously supporting my journey!! I APPRECIATE YOU!! 👍🐶💖🤗
Always loved this song. I think i remember an animated movie based on the song.
When I was wee and little, I had a fisher price phonograph player that played 45s, and I had this gem and wore it out.
Only one thing I can say, you smiled from ear to ear, thank you for making me cry
And you can go see Puff anytime you want to.
I saw them in concert as a teen with my family. One of the most memorable shows I ever saw. They shifted around the single microphone depending on which one was the featured singer on a given song which varied the trio's sound to exactly what was wanted on that song. I loved the audience participation (which didn't exist back when).
Back in 79 little 5yo me sang this at my aunts wedding, my uncle played guitar.
PURE MAGIC!!! Enough said.
***Mic Drop***
I remember this song from my childhood in the 1960s.
OMG This was part of my childhood too Love This Thank you for sharing Lots of love from York Pennsylvania❤
Peter Yarrow wrote a book based on the song. It's a beautiful children's illustrated book. I have bought it numerous times for family and friends who have little ones. How better to keep Puff Happy and alive than to introduce your little ones to the Msgic Dragon. On a Side note, not all little boys grow out of their wonder of things Magical. Right here is one! 60 years old and I still get tears of joy and sadness whenever I hear this song. And I have it on my main Playlist and listen to it often. As to other songs. They wrote Blowing in tge Wind, If I Had A Hammer, Where Have All the Flowers Gone. 500 miles. I have loved these three for years.
I was 10 yrs old when this came out. PP&M have been a staple in my musical life since then. Love them.
