Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hasbro Mandalorian Helmet Repaint!

  • Adam shows you how to take Hasbro's The Black Series Mandalorian helmet and make it look more like the prop used on the show. As Adam and Norm experiment with the paint process, they run into unexpected results that make the helmet look amazing. Using some standard clear coat spray spray paint, airbrushed floor wax, and a weathering pass of Archive-X acrylic, you can transform the off-the-shelf helmet into a cosplay-worthy piece with just the right amount of shine and grime!

    I see a really good looking replica of Mando's helmet... But I also see a blank Mandalorian helmet ready to be painted. Many of the Mandalorians in the show had either identical helmets painted different colors and/or with little addons. It's a good Mando helmet replica, but it's also a good starting point to be your own Mandalorian.

    Hey as great as the quality of the Anovos pieces are, it’s probably good to acknowledge that very many of their customers never got their products, or were strung along through years of delays. Adam's bit about focusing on fixing what's going to be seen (the front of the helmet rather than the back) reminded me a lot of my 3D Game Art class lol. There's a super common thing, normally called back-face culling, where Game Artists know a part of a wall or something won't be seen and they just don't even bother making it.

    • @VAXHeadroom
      @VAXHeadroom Před 2 lety +1

    Adam- do not promote Anovos! They have taken fans money for YEARS and not delivered products from Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel and Ghostbusters. They now appear to be operating under the name Denuo Novo though that company claims they have nothing to do with them. They will not answer if Joe Salcedo or Dana Gasser of Anovos are involved in this new company. If they are, they don't deserve one penny.

I just ordered this Hasbro helmet and will be doing the detailing myself now after watching this. Disney / Lucasfilm needs to align themselves with an efficient consumer oriented prop company to make products rather than the Anovos clowns

    Making stuff look worn and used like this is amazing. Ive done a LITTLE bit of stuff like this, and when i do i try and think about WHERE on the object would get the most wear, where you would actually grab it when taking a helmet off and on. I think about where the helmet would hit the ground if you were fall or lay back on it, basically where the dirt and grime would end up at from your hands and the world around you as well as where that same dirt and grime would end up being rubbed off or smeared around the most.

    I can smell the scent of aerosol and paint through the screen and it's making me want to go and start painting right now. Just leave work now on lunch and go to my shop.

    He dropped the roughness and upped the specularity, lol. I found this funny as well because of the various effects vids on peacekeepers helmet vid and when your filming stuff with chrome/reflective effects and the last thing you want is the camera and crew reflected in the scene.

      I'm pretty sure the Hasbro finish is vac metal coasted with a matte varnish to dull it down, so of course it looks like chrome when you remove the roughness.

    It's so interesting that these methodes of making something look more realistic are pretty much the exact same methodes I use to create realistic looking textures (but digital of course).

    I'm just excited we live in an era when these are open and available to anyone, within a reasonable budget. Also that be an easy way to achieve a chrome storm trooper look.

    I think that the reason why there are soo many clean #mando suits is that lots and lots of people love the look of clean chrome and don’t want to “ruin” that paint job.

    wish this would have showed up in my recommended about 3 months ago when I did this with my Hasbro Death Watch helmet... making me think about redoing it and starting with that nice shiny chrome base despite knowing that it looked easy because you've been doing this kind of thing professionally since I was a kid.

    The Bkack Series must have originally beena mirror chrome finish and then was dulled down at the factory in order for the gloss Adam sprayed to bring it back to mirror chrome. It's really fun watching these guys. Adam gets so giddy and seeing Norm progress over the last few years. Love the 1 day build videos guys. Keep them coming.

      I'm just wondering, How could I dole it down just a little bit to make it look like metal without using the floor wax? I don't have an air brush but I would like something just to bring it down a little bit from the mirror finish so it looks like metal

    I really like that chrome-ish effect that Adam got on his initially. Kind of Mandalorian meets Cylon, which may not be that practical for combat armor, but it sure looks great.

    Nice job. I like to play with pigment too. I did my helmet similar to yours only difference I’d I put some dirt on the visor corners to simulate grunge.
