  • This video takes you step-by-step on a drive across the border from Phoenix, Arizona, into Mexico.
Crossing the international border in Lukeville, Arizona / Sonoyta, Mexico is usually pretty hassle-free. The entire drive should take less than four hours.
Driving across the border can be intimidating if it's your first time. This video should give you an idea of what to expect as you drive a car through the border check point into Mexico.
The video also shows what it's like to head back north, from Rocky Point to Phoenix, passing the border patrol inspection station as you drive back into the US.
I'll also discuss warnings about speed in Sonoyta, and why you should have some cash on hand.

A lot of people ask the question: "Can I travel to Mexico without a passport?"
There's a chance you won't be asked to show your passport when you enter Mexico. That was the case for me on this drive across the border. However, I'd never leave the US without my passport, and you're almost certain to be asked to show it to the border agent when you drive back north into the US.

You could also mention that there is a USPS and Duty Free shop at Lukeville in the same parking lot as the gas station.

So they didn't check your passports? Do they often check passports?

    No FMM needed?

The consulate says "most" tourists going to Mexico by land or sea will need an FMM... but no one I know has had it checked driving through this port of entry. If you're handed one to fill out at the border, the policy is: You're required to keep it with you, and be prepared to provide it to immigration authorities when you depart.

I don't carry much with me. It's usually just what was leftover from my last trip. I just go to an ATM when I arrive in Mexico.

And the proposed bill is to increase agents... then more cars can be inspected/caught. Maybe the GOP will do something.
