How do I get a job with you guys?
they're a private company, it's a nice benefit to get a card and if you can turn that around to 3K then good on you
It's like a company giving stock away to the employees and them selling it. Nothing wrong with it. Pokemon gave employees exclusive cards as well.
I think it’s brilliant by Upper Deck. Give the employee a non taxable promo item as a bonus rather than cash value taxable benefit. Win on both sides
Still have to claim the taxes when you sell it but I understand what your saying business side
False, it is taxable. It works just like any bonus program, similar to my work, where you are issued points that can be turned in for reward. It is taxed when the points are issued, so you don't have an impact when used.
I’m with you no different then them giving them 1000 dollar bonus and telling you do what you want but can’t buy a new lawn mower with it.
It says employees on the card, they aren't making a card that is being put out into the public market to compete with the public.
Fair? Foul? WTF.......The FOOL is the person who buys it!
Offended? What? Ridiculous.
Can't wait for the SCI exclusive Will Grier autos!!!!! Sure to be all the rage this Christmas!!!!
Why would anyone want to be connected/buy from PWCC? Any company that has been kicked off of eBay for questionable activity is not one someone should be connected with.
If they were given as gifts, the employees are free to do with them what they will!
It’s no different than Tesla, or Apple, or whoever else giving their employees stocks in the company. It’s a private company. Its assets are the cards. I see nothing wrong with it unless it’s cards that are expected to be in products that consumers can hit.
I really love these discussions! Thank you for posting them every week. I'd love to see you have a segment on TCG, specifically Lorcana. With the Lorcana Challenge scaling up, and first chapter cards skyrocketing, I think they're worth briefly mentioning, even on a "sports card" channel.
One of my favorite cards I own is the 2007 employee upper deck quad patch of Jordan/Lebron/Kobe/KD.
Employees get bonuses for working with the company and that’s a cool idea being recognized with perks money doesn’t fulfill.
You get to be apart of history just like employees who get rings and bonuses from sports teams.
Let them keep or sell it if they want. Some people might want to trade that hockey card for the card they actually want.
Collector WANT to acquire rare things like this!
Let it happen!
Upperdeck has always appreciated their employees and have been gifting them cards for decades.
I mean it’s whatever, it’s basically a raise 😂 it’s collectible for anyone and still a limited card
I don’t see a problem with this at all, awesome employee benefit
“Employee cards” have been around and being sold for years. The big league influencer cards are similar in a less valuable way. The “influencers can easily and prob do list them on eBay and sell them for $80-100 each. They were each given a nice little stack.
While F1 races have weird start times for us in the US, the races are easy to find on TV with them on ESPN/ABC. While the F1 market may be small compared to football/basketball, those that are into it are fanatical in a great way. Also, F1 Topps now makes some really nice cards and uses great images, I personally think they use better images for those cards than they do for chrome/sapphire.
What’s the difference between this and a company paying employees with stocks?
If you can't trust the SGC 10 modern graded card then how do you trust a vintage SGC graded card
what to do when you pull a numbered card with a parallel not listed on the check list? real question
What's the difference between giving out valuable cards and say, giving associates company shares or profit sharing bonuses? I don't see an issue with it.
Well let's just be honest. How you got rich, and bought & sold cards were not always moral, etc... it is amazing how some people complain about the same things they themselves do.
Yeah this dude gives used car salesman/crypto scammer vibes!
Hello - here’s a topic idea: can you guys discuss what baseball boxes are the best value and which still have big hits that could still be unopened. I recently visited a hobby shop and didn’t know what to purchase left thinking that I need to do a lot of homework just to find a good purchase. Way too many options. A video like this every quarter could help for all folks who don’t typically buy boxes. Thanks
Are 9s the same price as 10s?
The company can do whatever they want to....fair
I am sure Jeff gave him guys his dumb topps cards? Seems like a smart business move. You give 3k bonuses for the price of printing
I crossed an 86 Fleer Magic base BGS 9.5 to PSA 10 but this was almost a decade ago
Just like Clark Griswold's Christmas bonus.. it's the gift that keeps on giving.
What are you guys talking about regarding stopping employees from selling things? Even Tesla and other car dealers make it illegal to sell their cars in the first year. Even the Oscar award can now never be sold. It is awarded to the actor, but it can never be sold according to the Oscar agency who awards them. Why couldn't a card company make some cards unable to be sold too? 😮
I own a couple of the oversize Kobe Bryant Santa suit cards. Paid about 10$ each years ago for them
Notice that all I look at have print issues - bad edges, spots etc.
That thumbnail gives me strong "Sports Card Dad" vibes....
If I was an employee who got some crappy gift instead of a raise, I'd be selling on ebay too.
Nobody's forcing anybody to buy these cards.
I guess I'm a little confused as to why this is even a video. This is simply an employee benefit, correct?
The cards i've seen on ebay all look in not that great of condition. If you zoom in there is a lot of chipping around the edges of the cards.
upper deck employee cards have been in circulation since the early 2000’s. its like giving a “bonus” to your employees. theres nothing wrong with that. in return, this undertaking also gives brand recognition if an employee sells his bedard employee exclusive in the secondary market.
1999 Michael Jordan jersey card was the first. Geoff is 25 years late to the debate.
If these folks are selling what was given to them as gifts or bonuses, I don’t have any problem with that whatsoever. But if they’re taking cards out of the production line that are supposed to go into packs and boxes, that’s an entirely different issue.
I would love Joe DiMaggio refractors. I would go all in lol. I feel there are not really any good moderns of him
SCI Chipper Jones Auto’s? How about you select 10-20 cards (Topps UD Donruss) and stamp them SCI Auto Release, Chipper signs them and a few go out as a giveaway ??? I’ll take one for the idea, and I’m willing to approach CJ with the idea if you fly me down.
100% with the employees (labor)! In a capitalist society that loves democracy and freedom, if they want to sell them, sell them! 🦅🔔💰 Also, I'm with you- Shoeless Joe Jackson refractor would be awesome!
They should sell the bedard cards. It’s a nice little bonus for them. Also a cheap way for upper deck to give bonuses without costing them much. Also ppl need to realize that not every employee collect cards or care much about them. It’s a job to them
Maybe psa should provide a $1 credit for each returned labeled
They've been doing this for year's. It's a great bonus get a job at UD
Its there yearly Bonuses
it is fair. as all the money you all spend is not fair to me. I'm disabled and would give anything for a box of nice cards. I could never afford any. So good for them.
this might be a catch 22 on the UD bedard, if you upload it on ebay, and nothing happens, congrats you just ousted yourself as a guy who doesnt hesitate to flip cards once they are in your possession, might be a cull if anything, id appreciate the employee card and keep it mint for a decade or two, some disney employee stuff commands insane prices because a couple bomber jackets from 1985 were employee gear, you have to understand that in this game, exclusivity is key, and if you help with it, why not get one in return
What's wrong with them doing that? It's fair considering that dealers have been jacking up prices on new releases for years now.
Fair, we don't have to buy the cards. Not sure how much money the employees make in general but I doubt that they are making big bank at Upper Deck on the regular.
Crossed a BGS 9.5 Messi 2014 WC to PSA got a 10, However, Crossed a Montana Rookie, BGS 9 to PSA, came back a 7, OUCH. Win some, lose some.
If they are given the card, legit, no issue with selling. If they are stealing out the back door, I have an issue.
kinda like the silver packs at walmart or target when they open a box for single pack sales... what happens to the silver packs? etc.....
🤣🤣🤣 you do realize that Silver Packs are hobby exclusive? Also when is the last time you saw regular packs of Topps or almost any product in individual packs? It why they invested blaster and mega boxes and hanger packs.
@@carolinatarheels7903 tru... hobby shops could easily do the same ... how about those hobby boxes opened for individual packs at shops? is that fair?
Perks of the job. Nothing wrong
Awesome job upper deck $35 a pack.
Can't wait till sixty
Of course Geoff doesn’t know anything about cards before 2020 because this was already a debate about employee appreciation cards all the way back to the first one with the Michael Jordan jersey card that employees were selling in 1999
Do a box battle who ever looses shaves his stash😊
😮😮😮😮
I think it’s fair, as long as they aren’t pulling out cards that are supposed to be in hobby boxes
It's perfectly ok. They gave them the card, it's a gift but it now belongs to the employee to do what they choose with. If these employees could use 3k more than a card than good on them.
Completely Fair!
They are just going to keep doing it but not mark them employee only. It's like a free bonus for the company.
Good for the employees.
My company gives me exclusive gold shares, but the average fiat debt driven American has no interest in that. God Bless!
Its fair people can sell there stuff if they want
There is a reason UD only has an NHL license. Look what they did with the Griffey Rookie. Nothing has changed.
MLB was the one that took Upper Deck and Playoff’s licenses after 2009 because they only wanted one manufacturer. It had nothing to do with what Upper Deck was producing.
My BGS 9.5 came back a PSA 7.
Does it look like a 7?
@@montana01 nope
$3K really isn't that much money. The way Doug talks about $3K, thinking he's not paid very well to work for Sports Card Investor haha
3k for free goes a long way dude. Some people struggle even to make 20k per year, it definitely helps
@@TheGuavaGuy No I get it, these guys who work for Sports Card Investor must get paid shit, like $20K a year where $3K matters.
I agree with you 100%
@@TheGuavaGuy I knew we were on the same page haha
The irs will have the last laugh! 😂
I think it’s a great perk for the employees
If your a Topps employee yea, its unfair. They have to dig cards out of the trash to resell.
It’s a way to give a bonus without costing upper deck hardly anything
Whats the point of the buzzer if geoff talks through it for minutes and also cuts off the other two guys?
No issue with this practice.. no different than a bonus in the way of a product gift. I would bet that a lot of employees with process positions are not even collectors so it makes sense to put them on the market for cash instead. My two cents
@sportscardinvestor @itsgeoffwilson can you discuss the huge debacle about the Topps transcendent cut autos this year in the next episode? Topps has absolutely butchered the cut autos from transcendent. They got both of the historical auto guys and even the card collector guys mad this time! Some prime examples are the Willie McCovey, Mark Twain, and Theodore Roosevelt among others. In years past there are a few cut autos here and there out of each product with cuts that don’t look good, but this years transcendent is by far the worst many have ever seen across the board!
Better than poorly made "ACEOs" or "reprints" on EBAY that no one has right to sell with logos aplenty. One of the perks of working at UD is the cards you get. Who cares. It's not like they stole $300 mil from a money storage facility in California.
This is the kind of thing that happens when a company has a monopoly.
That’s prolly the only benefit they get working for them. Let them have it.
Forget the employee cards: where’s the 1/1 Upper Deck???!! Tell us!!!
It’s whatever for me. Look at it as a bonus lol. I mean it is what it is. Me personally I don’t see none wrong with it
Fair or foul fanatics selling upper deck retail products at 80% mark up????
It's kind of funny that instead of giving a cash bonus to their employees they print out some free $$$$, genius.
You should sign Wander Franco
Why is it foul? Its like their bonus for working for the creator of the company. If you dont like it dont buy it.
This is like ANY fortune 500 company that gives their companies their discount on their products and so on.
I remember way back when Magic: The Gathering had just blown up I went to DragonCon (1994 I think) and one of the things they gave us in our gift bag at check in was a unique Magic card of a Dragon with the DC logo where the set logo usually was. Within hours people were on the pay phones selling them for up to $500 each! (imagine what it would have done if E-bay existed, thousands I'll bet.) 3 weeks after DragonCon the new issue of Wizard magazine came out with a copy of that card in EVERY issue. The card dropped from hundreds of dollars to $1 over night. What if UD has more of these Bedard cards to be inserts in a soon to be released product?
Small perk for what is probably low paying job. No issue at all here.
I like it, thinking of like, First Edition novels signed and handed out to the author's family and friends
Not forcing anyone to pay $3K.
Says everything about the culture when the boss gifts an item but wants to control how the person handles it….
As long as it’s not part of the set I’m okay with it.
Not a thing wrong with it. It's a great perk for working for the company. It's a bonus like any other company gives when things are going well. I bet they are working harder than they have in years due to the demand for the Bedard Rookie.
Topps did this with ohtani RC’s in 2018, they gave away auto versions for the Christmas holiday. This has been going on for a long time, this isn’t new and nobody cares
It’s There Bonus
No problem whatsoever with employees selling the card. My issue is with UD. While they may claim publicly to be opposed to their employees selling the cards, I'm sure they're gleefully rubbing their hands together behind the scenes as they further feed the frenzy of the Connor Bedard hype which further drives up the price of all their 2023-24 products.
How about Michael Jordan
Easy fair 😅
Reggie Jackson, A’s and Yankees.
A gift is a gift. It’s a gift. It’s totally fair to sell it. Upper Deck employee gifts have been being sold for YEARS.
UNLESS, there are documents that we can’t see or don’t know that would prohibit gifts/swag from being resold.
Why is this even a topic? Of course its fair. Its called a bonus.
This video buried every grading company not named PSA.
No, what’s criminal is Upper Deck selling hobby boxes for$300+.
Not their fault or Panini’s when stupid buyers have to get their fix and have shown they will pay anything to get it. No one is making the buyers buy.
@@carolinatarheels7903 True, I'm not buying at that price. Everyone wants to pull the Bedard bounty card.
How is this a video? All companies offer perks, some places are cooler than others. In this case Upper Deck gave employees something really nice. No different than Nike or Apple or any other company giving exclusives to employees
Shave the stash😂
