  • In this episode of the Blake Builds Van Life series, Blake installs the drawer runners (finally! 😅 ) and continues installing the wiring to be able to charge e-bikes, fit a boiler for hot water for the shower etc... All in an effort to build what Blake thinks is the ultimate mountain biker's van life conversion!

It's done now, but when Blake pulled out that loom he had just installed he should have taped a spare length of wire, or some string to it that would have pulled from the garage end, then he could have used that to pull the full loom back through with much less hassle.

Yes Word of Advise for anyone else doing this put the cables in plastic flexible conduit before running it in through the van and when running it through the structure of the van use big blobs of silicone to hold it in place wherever possible or use expanding foam to hold the cables / conduit in place. As the constant movement of the van is will rub the insulation down to the inner core of the wire and can cause electrical problems for the whole van that are a nightmare to trace once all the finished cladding is on. All sharp metal edges of the van that the cable crosses over, use Duck / Gaffa / Foam Tape over these edges as again the movement of the van will slice through the cables and conduit in no time.

  • @dazmtb
    @dazmtb Před 2 lety +2

I think you should run som spare cable runs just in case you need them in the future.
Take photos of where the cables runs are and where all the open areas are between the braces just in case you want to add any more electrical items or built in speakers 💭

blake, I reaaaallly hope you treat/paint all those welded steel you got in your van (and every exposed metal when you cut holes in your van next time!!!), or your van will tend to rust like hell in near future! tip for the wires: I put them into cable hose before I put them through the van, that way its a little bit easier (still hard work), but the cables are better protected from the sharp metal edges of the van and also won´t cut open so easy from the vibrations later while driving - cheers

Looks great and it’s cool to see metal frame work. I too really enjoyed cutting the windows and fan holes. It’s very satisfying. Looking forward to seeing it done. It’s great that you’ve got help on hand. The electronics to me awhile to get my head round and my dad helped me being an ex car mechanic. Keep smashing it out you’ve got this. Love the energy, Blake! The house of a van is a moving earthquake. Those wires need loom to protect them from the van’s sharp edges!
I’m using Ancor Marine duplex for my 12V. It’s red and black with a sheath, inside a singe white sheath, AND I will use loom around that; plus extra protection where the wiring is in close contact with the van metal.

Just wondering have you purposely left the insulation until after you complete your welding for fire reasons? Also, for your electrical install, you should wrap your wires passing through the body with split conduit. Bit late now, but multi strand wire should be used in vehicles as opposed to single core wire.

Double pole means active/neutral or positive/negative are switched together. 2 way switching is having switches that turn of/off from 2 different locations. I’m assuming UK is same as Aus and requires motorhomes/caravans to have double pole switching on all 230V wiring.

Line it before the weld. Move welds so one area does not over heat and warp. Thin metal to a thicker metal to much weld can burn. Right through it. I’m learning welding. My first lesson move welds to not over heat. And line your lines with tape or rope so you know you are straight. Magnets as well use them.

Everything looks amazing and really like how you think everything in advance , well with few mistakes but amazing man. Just want to ask, why you dont use cable protection, because :
    - with vibration and time, cable is getting old and with contacting with metal can be destroyed at one point and short-circuit can happened.
    - prevent mouse from eating it :D yeah i know sound funny but its happens.
You can put all the caballing in this protection soft pipes :) Just giving advice.

All that wiring needs to be in conduit or wrapped in fabric tape and strapped in place .
Split flexible auto conduit is cheap and you can even put it in after , although not as easy.
The conduit still need fixing in place too. Any bare wires should run through grommets in bodywork and all edges , wire or conduit runs over should have tape on the edges.
All this cuts down on annoying rattles too.
That wiring is going to be a nightmare in the future.

Make sure you go under the van and respray the underseal where you have welded. It will burn it off and rust. Transits don't need any help in that department.

It’s cool and fun to watch, but I’d stay at hotels and spend less money or in this case time (which is money).

When a hydraulic brake has leaked do you need to buy a brand new set or can you fix the broken brake

this isn't GMBN Tech channel, you're better off asking Doddy over there. but depends on where & why it's leaking. if it's leaking because of a bad hose then you replace the hose & the fluid and away you go. there's a whole video over on GMBM Tech to show you how to do that. personally I don't know much about brake levers or hydraulic calipers for bicycles beyond what I've just mentioned
