- Building and painting Revell's 1/24 Sauber C22 F1 car as driven by Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld during the 2003 Formula 1 season. This is one of a range of kits Revell released in the 2000s, including the Jordan 197, Jordan EJ10, and Mercedes W01 cars which I have already built, plus various Ferraris, McLarens, and Toyotas. Despite the decals on this kit looking old and a bit dirty, the end result was really pleasing.

Setting aside those minor issues, the outcome is a really great job on this kit. I suppose one positive of these racing kits is their colourful paint schemes which makes them stand out and tend to hide any shortcomings. It must feel good ticking off a job that's been in the making for over two years, MN :)
Thanks, it really does :) Tonight (as you'll see on Patreon over the next couple of days) I've been working on the LCM diorama and the farmyard repair diorama. Although the freezing temperatures predicted for this weekend don't bode well for 3D printing the roof tiles...
Nice little build. I've a few of these kits plus also have this teams F1 truck by revell. Also have the old tamiya big scale JPS lotus.
I'd love to have a go at one of the 1/12 F1 cars. I'm really hoping Tamiya re-release their FW14. I'm on a bit of an F1 push at the moment for some reason.

The beauty of the Pale panel lines is,you could have done it as a BLUE PRINT plan paint job,I have seen that done on an FW190 some years ago

Very nice end result. Always enjoy your videos. I've never considered building F1 cars but your builds certainly make me tempted. The late 90's early 00's cars are by far my favourite, Particularly the B&H Jordans.
Thank you. The Revell kits are definitely a good bet if you don't fancy spending big bucks on Ebbro or Tamiya F1 cars. They're super expensive these days.

So cool looking. Another awesome job. I managed to snag a couple of these 1/24 Revells (Ferrari's F2000 & F2005, and a BMW Sauber), but you have me on the lookout for more at shows I attend.
Thanks! Yes, I'm on the hunt for the BMW Sauber and the Toyota too. The only risk with these older kits is the decals - and unlike the Tamiya kits, it is hard or impossible to find replacement sets.
@@ModelNerd Agreed, I always check to make sure they're not too yellowed or appear cracked before I buy. I wonder if a bad set could be scanned, cleaned up in an editing program, and then printed off by an expert like Indycals to get replacements made. Surely wouldn't be cheap.
Nice work, mate. This is tempting me to build one of my Revell F1 kits - I have the Merc W01, the McLaren Mp4/25 (which I have made before, but off channel) and even the Toyota TF102. That one is strange though as it was reboxed with a Dremel livery for a promo.

@@ModelNerdthe box has a Spyker on it as Dremel sponsored them during their sole season as rebranded Jordan. There's no reference to the team on the kit decals though.
Nice build! As you say, these are good kits with some interesting cars. Amazing to think that Red Bull was just a sponsor here before they achieved their current prominence in the sport.

Yet another excellent build video. I've been a fan of F1 for many years (back into the early 1970s), but if you hadn't pointed out the 'discrepancies' & faults with the decals, I'd never know anything was wrong. I'm currently building the Tamiya 1:12 scale Renault RE 20. I started it a while ago & got frustrated with some issues. But after seeing your builds, I realise I'm building it for myself & no one else, so will be a little more 'lenient' with it. 😉

Thanks. These ones are the easier of the F1 kits since there is no engine detail that will be seen. In that regard not too different from a tank, except subassemblies often need painting before final construction. Tamiya kits are a bit more involved because their cowls can be removed to view the engine (and although I never do remove them on my display models, I have to do the engine :D ). Tamiya models of the older F1 cars (like the P34s I did) are the worst because their engines are always visible :)
Sauber were metallic as of 1996. Minichamps represented the paint as metallic on their 1/18 diecast
Yeah. Unfortunately I couldn't find a good paint match.
That's a nice looking car and colour scheme. I suspect the Tamiya kits cost a lot more than the Revell ones. I think with Airfix and Revell you kind of get what you pay for. If I am after a particular awkward colour I play around with very small quantities of colours first. Really just dips of the brush in various colours until I am confident I have the colour I want. I just make a mental note of the rough ratios of paint. Once I know which colours and rough ratios then I go for larger quantity. This stops you wasting large quantities of paint. Its not 100% foolproof though.
Thanks. Totally agree - the Revell kits are very good for their price and I'm very keen to try the McLaren MP4/25 now. Oh yes, I've wasted a lot of paint and thinners by not doing what you suggest! I need to try it :)
Yes! i love the early 2000s f1s and although this video was uploaded at a late time,It is amazing the paint job is also special and you executed it great,I think you should try the jaguar that was used at monaco with the diamond in the nose!Great work!
Haha, that would be great. I do have the decals to convert the McLaren MP4/13 into the Jaguar R02 (or was it R01, I'll have to drag them out).

Lovely job, I miss when F1 at least made the attempt to be competitive. I don't know if this would be a useful tip for you or not, but I find painting the black parts first easier, then doing the main body colour of whatever vehicle I'm painting. I find then it leads to only minimal clean up (at least for me!), as I hate re-doing base coats.
Thanks. Yes, this was a good era for F1. I normally do as you suggest with the black. In this case I totally missed the fact that those aero parts should be black until right near the end! :)
What Colors I need to buy for this f1?
The main one is just the Tamiya blue spray can that I mention in the video. Plus the white and the yellow, which are available from most manufacturers.
