  • Building and painting an in-flight model of the Revell Lancaster kit. This kit compares very well with the Airfix kit, with none of the plastic warping that I experienced with that. I built this model in wheels-up mode because I accidentally dropped the undercarriage onto a concrete floor and destroyed them!

    If you're going to have a stopped prop, you need to feather the blades. Turn them parallel with the airstream. If they're left in normal pitch they'd spin due to windmilling and not be stopped. At least until the bearings fail and the whole prop rips off... There are photo etch "prop-blur" items available. That might be something to investigate. I've got a Hasegawa Lanc. in the stash but I've got to engineer some display space before I can do any more multi-engine jobs.

    • @ModelNerd

      Thanks - that's good advice. I hadn't thought about the pitch before - good point!

    What a great build.
    I would prefer the model with all propellers mounted like it’s frozen in a millisecond in time. Without the propeller blades the holes for them in the spinners kind of reveals that they’re not spinning anyway.
    Chilling to hear that live sound clip from a mission. British people always seem to keep their cool. So the got a German night fighter, ehh...

      Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. Yes, the holes are a problem with no propeller blades. I'm still looking for a perfect spinning prop effect :)

      I recently built a 1/72 airfix Zero and I deleted the prop by fitting the blades then snipping them off with sprue cutters. I then filled the holes with some putty, sanded and painted it. It looks perfectly fine in a diving pose.

    I just purchased this model today because theres a D-Day group build coming up on a Facebook page I'm a member of. It's for brush painted midels only, so I'm gonna have some fun trying to keep the paint smooth on such large flat areas!! 🤣
    The audio at the end was a nice touch. It's good to be reminded of what the kit is all about. Theres mote important things than ejector pin marks, fitment issues and the wrong number of rivits. We need to remember that thousands of crewmen died in these planes.

    Reckon if you're going to replicate damage at this scale you need to go balls deep; big gaping holes, exposed framework, missing cowls, maybe one damaged gear down, flaps down, escape hatch gone, one spinning prop, the others feathered and possibly burnt out, guns jettisoned, smashed front perspex...
    But great work, Nerd, once again 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    Very nice build. Bravo, and I'm glad it's not just me....I too had huge problems with the Airfix Lanc's warped fuselage and bomb bay. The one noticeable flaw with the Revell kit is the FN 50 mid upper. They captured the complex curves of the cupola really well, but it sits too high.

  • @BillHalliwell
    @BillHalliwell Před 6 měsíci +1

    G'day Stu, I truly like your Revell build of this iconic bomber. Airfix plastic has been too 'soft' for quite some time and this leads to warping and bending either by poor mould ejection or due to packaging and handling issues in the supply chain.
    If I can offer up my 2 bob's worth: as the underside of the Lanc is black, a black stand, to my eye, makes it look too similar to part of the aircraft. Of course, I know it isn't but the first impression of models is dependent on those first few seconds when something is seen for the first time.
    I would suggest either a white stand or, preferably, a clear stand. I don't know if clear material can be done in 3D printing; that technology being a mystery to me.
    Apart from that, your Revell Lanc is a great build of my, all time, favourite heavy bomber of WW2. The design of the Lanc is far more 'logical' and balanced than the B-17, yet I am fond of the 'Fortress' too. I've got squadrons of them either built or still in my stash. Happily, I've got 3 Revell Lancs unbuilt and I want to do at least one as an aircraft from a RAAF Sqn., having been in the RAAF myself. I'm also saving up for a 1/48 Lanc which, down here in Australia can be had for a small fortune! 😉
    I've been a subscriber for quite a while now and I always look forward to your builds.
    Cheers, and all the best for 2024. Bill H.
    P.S. Briefly, my pet peeve about model manufacturers is that most of them provide 'in-flight' options but a scant few companies provide pilot models. I could be wrong but I can't recall seeing pilots or aircrew figures in Airfix kits for years. In fact the last Airfix pilot I saw looked like the poor bloke had been dipped in a vat of acid; so I didn't use him.
    Airfix was not very good at figures, perhaps that's why they stopped them.
    The level of minute detail possible with 3D printing is amazing.
    I predict that plastic model kits will undergo a 'revolution'; entire kits, one day, being done via 3D printing. I just hope I'm still around when that happens. B.H.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks Bill. Yes, it should be possible to print the stand in clear resin. I agree about the pilots - a lot of the Vintage Classics kits from Airfix include them still, but at some point Airfix seem to have stopped including them in new releases. Happy new year!

    Beautiful build.I am currently building the old FROG 1/72 Lancaster, which has the bulged bomb bay doors to accommodate the 12,000-pound tallboy bomb.I am only using the parts and decals supplied with the kit and limiting myself to only using materials available from when the kit was originally released,and,to be honest,I haven't had as much fun building a kit in a long time!.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Fantastic! It can be so much fun building these older kits, and by limiting ourselves to OOB it can also reduce the stress, I find. I'm surprised there hasn't been a modern release of the Tallboy equipped Lancaster. I have a 3D printed conversion for the Grand Slam (which is essentially just the bomb - no bomb bays needed). I read some quite intense debate online about whether the bulged bomb bay doors for the Lancaster Mk II (as supplied by Airfix) are the same as the Tallboy doors. Anyway, enjoy your build!

    Another great build of a great bomber and brave crews And I think the only bomber in WW2 with a " loo". I'd be interesting to know if anybody tried to use it dodging AAA, and wearing high altitude gear. This video is also an excellent tutorial as I have the two Airfix. Kits, radial and Merlin engines.They are in my stash hanger along with Airfix ground support kit for hopefully a winter, build, I'm still working on all these new paints and washes. BTW, I do have the VMS varnished. Excellent 3D stand. For a challenge regarding aircraft damage diorama I've never seen a modeler attempt a diorama of the B24D Lady Be Good I have no idea how to go about creating damage like that on plastic. I have had some success with ICM 1/48, crews both German and British I believe they also might have 1/72 as well. Recently received an ICM 109 and crew. The officer in trench coat looks like Galland. TAMIYA AND ITALEARI TEAMED up on a Hurricane that is very nice. Japanese called the crew " dolls". I went that route over the ARMA. Cheers till the next video.

    A lovely in flight model. What do you use to thin VMS varnish? I have tried VMS but it made a sticky mess of both the model and the airbrush.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před 10 měsíci

      Thank you. I don't think the VMS varnish, although like you I have had many issues with it gumming up. Some things I have found help:
      Sometimes a lower air pressure sprays better than a higher one.
      I work on a 'production line' basis. I get everything lined up that will need varnishing and then I spray. And I don't stop until they're all done. I've found even a minute or two pause and it starts gumming the needle.
      If the needle gets gummed I dip a cotton bud in Tamiya lacquer thing and dab it on the end of the needle.
      I never use the VMS as the last thing I spray that session. I always try to have something else to paint afterwards, to help flush out any remaining varnish.
      If I've been spraying the varnish I always have a thorough clean and disassemble straight afterwards (this is another reason to spray many things at one time, to do this as few times as possible)
      I hope this helps!

    Die Version mit einem Propeller und der Rest ohne Blätter finde ich die beste Lösung. Nur würde ich den stehenden Propeller auf den Motor mit den Beschussschäden setzen, denn da ergibt es Sinn das dieser abgeschaltet ist.
