  • The Indian Air Force continues to shrink even as regional threats show no sign of abating. Does approval for a new squadron of upgraded MiG-29 fighters show a new way to address India's depleting fighter force?
Naghma Sahar, Senior Fellow at ORF, and Angad Singh, Project Coordinator with ORF's Strategic Studies Programme, discuss.

I am pretty convinced that Mirage 2000s should be the mainstay of the IAF over the next decade. Get them from France and gradually upgrade them. I hope IAF gives it a serious try.

Wonderful Discussion Nagma. Japanese funds with Western technology and harnessing pur private industry, we can ramp up our capabilities with Research and Development. I think the story of Rafael, and what are the plans beyond the 36 to be delivered, was not clear from the discussions.

Why not Rafale, because the India specific IAF requirement has already been amortized across the 36 fly-away jets. Therefore, the remaining 88 aircraft should be much cheaper than going for another make.

Okay Mr. Nathan Sekhar Sydney Australia,
      1. US won't sell F-35 to India .
      2. India would buy atmost 150 aircrafts, and it would cost india 200 million+ per aircraft and add weapons to that $300 million+ that is a $45 billion deal.

The idea of going for Mirage-2000 is bonkers. Instead India should get atleast 200 Rafales for IAF and Navy under the Make in India initiative. We can also ask Dassault for their help in our Kaveri engine development as well.

      My take is-
Place combined order of Rafale for IAF & Indian Navy (Rafale M). Total around 150 rafale(90 for IAF & 57 for Navy) Manufacture within india get french help in Kaveri engine development.
Order 83 Tejas Mk 1a & Speed up work on Tejas Mk2
Upgrade Su-30 to Super Sukhoi Standard
Get 24 to 36 F-35C for Navy Helicopter carrier (4 Heli carriers are planned). For now Drop plan of acquiring 3rd Aircraft carrier INS Vishal. INS Vishal is a luxury which we cannot afford right now. Dropping INS Vishal will alone save 20 Billion USD.
2 Aircraft Carrier and 3 or 4 Helicopter carrier with F-35C on them will provide much boost to naval power of India.
3 to 4 Helicopter carrier will cost within 5 billion USD and 36 F-35c with in another 5 billion. US will easily Provide F-35 ti Indian navy because all major US allies(South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Japan) in Indo-Pacific have F-35 .
Rest divert fund and focus on AMCA. AMCA is very important for India
