    Lot of these I learned by doing photography back in my high-school days. Still recommend everyone to get a cheap camera and learn how the camera itself works, dive into photography a bit, will be super straight forward bringing those knowledge into any 3D art works.

    It was such a relief to hear you calling out The Golden Ratio for the bollocks it is. I was worried when I saw it in the thumbnail. I laugh when I see these posts of images with a spiral superimposed on them in any-which-way in feeble attempts to make it somehow line up with things.

    You jumped up about 6 places in my book when you said the golden spiral is bs. I've suspected that for a long time but I'm not a pro. I also expect that while color schemes are real and useful, there are enough of them to apply to just about any piece of art there is. I'm really enjoying your videos and never been tempted to take a masterclass as much as I've been tempted by your offering. Thank you for the excellent videos you produce.

      Thank you. I'm 80% sure the golden ratio is a load of nonsense in the majority of cases.

    9:49 3 is on the Fibonacci sequence. That might be part of it why it works. Fibonacci isn’t just the spiral. It also might be three is the smallest loop able number so you can make a circle without too much stuff. 2 makes a line.

      Very possible.

      I don't think it's because of the Fibonacci sequence.
      The best description of the Rule of Threes (not to be confused with the Rule of Thirds) that I've heard is three is the smallest number which establishes a pattern.
      One is an anomaly and two is a coincidence. Three is the first number where you can start making extrapolations. And our pattern seeking brains find that appealing.

    Great video man, I knew most of it already, but it's always good to refresh some knowledge. But hey, what happened to your views / traffic? Did CZcams chance anything in its algorithm?

    • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  Před 3 měsíci

      Some videos just don't gain traction for whatever reason. I guess composition is just a boring sounding topic and people aren't willing to give the video a chance.

    I dropped by just now to see if you have a video on mixing and masking in the shader and compositor editor (which carries over to gn) I think I have a solid understanding of the mix node settings and usage but I will get unexpected results. I return to the same videos I know are comprehensive. I watch photoshop blend mode videos, I read about the darkroom equivalents, I try to just understand the math. I can get results just from experience but I get frustrated that I don’t set things the way I need first try. I really want that foundational certainty that one needs to build on top of. Maybe you’ve got the language that will get through to me on this subject. You’ve helped me level up in other areas. I’m sure you’ll be covering it in the course to an extent but this is a reoccurring vex I badly need to nix

    The golden ratio is no BS. The reason why it applies to the cat comic is because the cat is a part of nature and everything that is part of nature follows the golden ratio. Take an arm of an normal person. The elbow divides the upper arm from the forearm exactly in the golden ratio. The wrist divides the forearm from the hand exactly in the golden ratio. The finger knuckles divide the fingers and the palm exactly in the golden ratio. The knuckles of the fingers each divide further in the golden ratio. The ratio of the circumference of the upper arm to the forearm is exactly a ratio in the golden ratio. This could be continued for the whole body. But not only for the human body. Also for all animals, plants (e.g. the alignment of sunflower seeds follow the golden spiral), structures in crystals, patterns (e.g. tree bark, dried river beds) or even wave structures. The list goes on and on. Even the distance between planets and the sun follow the golden ratio. And that even in the rythm of rotation.
    What I'm trying to say is that it's no wonder that you can put the golden spiral almost anywhere. Because if you couldn't do that, the picture wouldn't look natural and therefore not convincing. So it's absolutely not BS.

    • @Stanimate0515
      @Stanimate0515 Před 3 měsíci +1

      lol of course it's BS. You have to really stretch to say even most things in nature follow the golden ratio, let alone everything. There is no such thing as a "normal" person, so of course it will always be different numbers for every person for all the measurements you listed. Despite the name, the golden ratio is an irrational number, so even if you have a perfect "normal" person, there is no way to take two measurements and have them equal "exactly" the golden ratio. There are lots of spirals and things in nature that are close, but lots of things that are not. regardless, the point is about whether it applies to composition. The cat is a stylized drawing, so it's not part of nature. The artist could draw the tale curving any way they wanted. They aren't forced to make it fit the spiral. Like he said, people just see it everywhere in art because it's easy to just mess around with a spiral until you get something that sort of lines up.

    I got some "What Does the Author Mean?" vibes, as in the author meant to write a story, not everything has to have a hidden message. But I know better, I know rule of thirds and golden ratio are a legit thing, but sometimes it just feels like a load of bs. 😅
