2003 Chevy Suburban Fuel Filter Replacement (Flex Fuel)

  • In this video I replace the fuel filter in my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, with the 5.3L flex fuel motor, with a Napa Gold unit. The swap went pretty easy other than the fact that the first filter I bought was the wrong one. You'll definitely need a quick disconnect tool to complete this job.

    Just changed my fuel filter a couple of weeks ago on 2003 Tahoe.I have Lisle 39900 Master Disconnect Set and there is a tool for GM that I use from the kit. It is a 3 pc, one piece is cut in half to go around the line and then the handle that goes around both pieces and just a little bit shorter than the disconnect you used. It is somewhat of a pain to use in tight spots. The line that you are disconnecting is a short line and normally I take off at the other end and take filter off then take line off the filter. Terrible location for a fuel filter. Thanks for the video!

    @roltyd22 Před 2 lety +1

    You can follow that short quick disconnect line to where it plugs in the other fuel connector and remove it with the filter its only bout a foot long and remove it from the filter on the work bench,lot easier if you dont have the low profile disconnect tool

      Yes they do and those engineers should be banned from the automotive industry, at my shop when we encounter this wonder of a design we splice an adequate generic external filter into the factory feed line, they can be picked up at any parts store, just make sure the filter and supporting hardware are rated for your specific fuel system and do not use rubber line with barbed fittings for anything other than emergencies

    I had the same problem with my 97 GMC Jimmy for the longest, it wouldn’t start it would just spin. What my solution was that I had some corrosion in my distributor cap, after I took the cap off and removed the corrosion it sparked right up. Not sure if you’re still having the problem but that was the solution to my truck.

    I am having the same type problem with my 2002 Tahoe.
    Your filter is the type on flex fuel vehicle.
    You don’t need a tool for that filter.
    You squeeze the two tabs with your fingers.
    I know I have to put my o rings back in my quick connect because I found a piece of it on the ground after putting it back on. I am hoping my no start is from that.

    I tried to do this, but I couldn't unscrew the threaded end. I felt like I was going to damage the fuel line and cause problems, so I stopped. I have the new filter and bought the tool you recommended, so I want to finish the job. There is little rust, so that should not be the issue. I'm not sure what to do next.

  • @sheputthelimeinthecoconut629

    GM famous for fuel pumps. I even keep one with the spare tire tools in my Yukon. Have you checked your fuel pressure yet?

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 Před 4 lety +1

      @She put the lime in her coconut The GM assembly line does not install the rusty dirt packets in the plastic fuel tanks when new. Your dirty fuel is coming from the station where you buy it. They installed filters inside gas pumps in the 90’s and later moved it into the external hose with a clay the swells with water contact. The pump is not a garbage disposal and has a different armature for flex fuel. While inside a plastic bucket to maintain a fuel supply without air during turns with low fuel reduces misfire codes. This pump assembly has two filter on it with one on bottom & one inside on pump. The filter media is better as you get closer to the injectors, so if running @ 7,000RPM with restricted per-filters, amps go up, terminals get hot and volume drops, pressure suffers and injectors stay open longer. Install a new ACDelco / Delphi pump in a dirty tank and it will fail quickly. Inspect in & out for contamination before new pump. If dirty, remove tank, wash vigorously with really hot water, drain & dry. This is in the factory service procedures. Buy your fuel where they sell a lot and keep tanks clean. It’s your money so ask how got 5 years from first pump, then install the same pump as the plant did and it only made it 7 months? Just answered. Not just a GM only tech but worked at dealers for decades and independents on imports as well. EFI since 1976.

    Check the fuel pump. Turn the key to the run position and listen for a hum from the gas tank. Also, check your fuel pump fuse and relay just in case it might not be the fuel pump because if you have to replace the pump, you have to drop the gas tank and you don't want to waste your time dropping the tank if it was something silly like the fuse.

    I wish I’d have seen this when it came out, because it is, or it was your crank sensor preventing your truck from starting and vacuum leaks on vehicles with efi result in erratic idle and running in general. And future reference, those pink filters will not prevent you from inhaling o vapors ie gasoline vapors, paint vapors etc... you need a filter rated for organic vapors. I work with automotive paints which use hardeners that contain isocyanates which if you’re thinking “hey that sounds like cyanide” you’re correct as they are chemically related, and if breathed in will attack your nervous system as will gasoline vapors because they easily cross the blood brain barrier. Point of this little rant is some manufacturers will advertise their filters as having charcoal filter media but even if it is there it’s not enough to protect from some truly awful sh!t

    Water in MAF terminals, loose fit from quick lube joints pulling on it to sell an air filter. Check vacuum leaks with carb spray or propane enrichment tool while IAC unplugged unless DBW, then watch fuel trim change. Bad MAF signal due to poor ground or pinched wire from previous accident... Get a GM Tech w/Tech-II scan tool, don’t guess. They only made 1.9 million “Z” flex fuel GMT600 trucks, very few have captured high temp silicone intake gaskets fail. Oh yea, removed knock sensors, clean valley threads, use dielectric grease for good water proof ground as this changes knock sensors biased signal then high temp Red RTV cap covers and use dielectric grease on terminals. Your dropping needle dough on stuff you don’t need. Goggles - ok, gloves - ok, but activated charcoal respirator is a little much. No fire extinguisher handy - priceless
