Very, very, VERY TIRED, but I got the job done thanks to you! It was a simple job like you said, it was just the element of doing something for the first time that made it feel so exhausting. Felt really rewarding however once everything was finished and I heard the sound of my Corolla running again! Thanks again 😊👍

An awesome detailed tutorial. I would recommend this tutorial to anyone, it's very clear and concise. Because I'm not a mechanic and unfortunately do come from a layman's point of view, I would suggest to others, when placing the starter into the bell housing, make sure the wires are clear from point of entry, otherwise you may insert the starter and then crank down the two starter bolts until you discover the power wire has been lodged and pinched between the seal. Another suggestion; when positioning the shroud, be beware that there are left side & right side Shroud slide in attachments found at the base of the shroud to seat the frame,.

Clear, concise video - Doing mine this morning - Will edit with results - Thanks for the lesson!
(An hour later...) Finished, it went perfectly thanks to your video! - I ended up replacing the two zip-ties that hold the wiring harness to the fan shrouding as they snapped from age. The upper bolt in back was tricky to get to but did it all with a 3/8" socket wrench, 10mm deep socket and short 12mm and 14mm sockets and a screwdriver. Also took the liberty of deep-cleaning the battery terminals and connectors with the two-piece terminal cleaning tool.
Most amazing thing, I didn't curse once and that's something! No blood, no broken knuckles. Thanks Todd, and thanks unknown Toyota designer.

I watched this video a couple of times before heading out to do it and it took only about 30 minutes to change it out. Having all the tools ready beforehand was helpful as you stated in your video what sizes are required. I bought my 2003 Corrola NEW off the lot in May 2002. I drove it until last year and then gave it to my 17 year old son. This morning I get the call that "the car won't start". This car has 160,000+ miles on it. It sat for 2 years while I was stationed overseas from 04-06. Anyway, everything checked out except the starter. I followed your instructions and in less than an hour the car was running again. Excellent instructional video! The only thing I did differently was to remove the short bracket held on by two bolts that blocks access to the back starter mounting bolt. (this may be a model year thing) Easy two bolts and my pudgy hands were able to get to and see that back mounting bolt. The two bolts on the bracket are two different lengths, so keep track of that for reassembly. That's all I did to make it a little easier. Now hoping to get another 160K miles out of the car. Best car ever! I tell my son that every month his car runs and keeps getting him to class and work is like putting $350 a month in the bank! Again, EXCELLENT video!!!

Car has nearly 3k miles. I changed out my factory starter 2.5 years ago at Advanced Discount Auto. Starter was a little over a hundred bucks, but it had a lifetime warranty and they honored that. I think other auto parts stores do the same thing. So the fix was purely labor. This job took 2 hours the first time and only 1 hour the second time because we knew kinda what we were doing and this video helped a ton!
    Excellent job!

Thanks for the useful video. I have had two Corollas, 2004 and 2005, both developed starter problems. First was due to the ground strap corroding off (no protection on it, no good in salt country) and second was brushes wearing out (I think). In both cases this renders the car 'dead', so knowing about the starter is important as these cars get older. cheers.

A little aggravating but pretty straight forward. Mine had a bracket in front if the throttle cable assembly that had to be removed in order to get to the starter bolts but, other than that, exactly like your vid showed. With it being a first time job for me it took abt 3 hours including time to rest my aching back from bending over front of car. Saved me at least a couple hundred bucks in labor charges. Good vid. Thanks.

Following the video, spent an hour and finally got the old starter off and put the one one in. One thing I need to add is that the old starter could get stuck there so hard that it needs a hammer to knock it off, which is my case. It got stuck so hard that no matter how hard I tried I could not get it off by hand and I even started to think there might be a third bolt hiding somewhere keeping the starter there. After reviewing the video two more times, I was confident that it could be stuck due to age and I need to use force to knock it off. With a 3-lb hammer, a few times of tapping hard, I was able to knock it off finally. Installation is much easier compared to disassembling it. With the old starter, every time I needed to try a few times to get engine started. With the new one, start it just like a new car. Thanks very much for the instruction !!!

On our 2004 Corolla, the starter’s rear bolt was the more difficult to get to, but persistence paid off. About a 25 min. Project.

In my experience with several Toyotas now, I have just replaced the contacts on the original starter and they worked perfect again. If you open up the starter, you will see what I mean about those contacts. Really simple and super cheap to do.

On the same car, I did mine by removing the intake manifold. Not difficult, and it gave me plenty of room. One has to be careful to make sure all the hoses go back in place. It didn't occur to me to take the fan and shroud out. Next time I have to get to my starter, I'll try your method.

I had to rap on the starter body with a ball peen hammer to get it loose, but it came right off. The hardest part for me was just getting the little rubber boot out of the way to refasten that last nut. I've changed several starters, but never on a Corolla.
    Thanks!!!
