    I'm completely blown away at all the easy to access high end gear in the stores. I dare say Hong Kong gives Japan a run for its money if not flat out beat it as a hub for the electronics/audio geek. Awesome video Lachlan. My future wife has visited Hong Kong various times and shes said I haven't lived until I've visited Hong Kong. I have to see what you and her is talking about one day, hopefully soon.

    It was like this, the reason I subscribed your channel because of one video you made, and that was reviewing the Sony XBA H3, at that time I was really fascinated of the XBA H3 and I was comparing the H3 with the UM pro 40, then I bought it after I watched your review. It was great, but then then A3 and the Z5 came out. And now I wanted to buy the A3....
    Back to the topic, your video are great, keep up the good work, I am a HongKongese 2. Love you video!

    My old UE finally broke down and I would like to try out over-the-ear type. Could you please recommend a noise-isolate headphone that is good at orchestra with a rich, warm bass, at $100 to $300 price range?
    I'm kinda stuck between ATH MSR7, M50X and AKG K550. There are couple good choices in Sennheiser and Grado, but they are all open back...

  • @Steampunk915
    @Steampunk915 Před 9 lety +9

    you just perfectly described my feelings when purchasing a really expensive headphone, whether the headphones are cheap or not you wonder if you ever gonna use this headphone everyday or these pair of headphones are just gonna sit on the desk gathering dust and you wonder that overtime you either love this headphones or straight out underwhelmed by the sound it offer for the price. but I guess that is the life of a headphone collector, you either love them or hate them.
    damn it, of all the times I've been to Hong Kong I've never got a chance to go to Wan Chai, thanks for giving me an even longer list of the places that I want to go to when I'm there!

    • @RBUpload
      @RBUpload Před 9 lety

      I take it even a step further. I was introduced to higher-end headphones last year with an AKG K551 (the "portable" K550) which I picked up for a mere 80 euros (!). I love the sound but it can be a bit harsh and tiring sometimes. They also needed a LONG time to "burn-in". Before that period the bass was non-existent, but after 50-100 hours the bass started to become very tight and deep.
      I was looking at a Denon D600 I could pick up for 160 euros, but I didn't because I already own a pair of good headphones. I can't justify multiple headphones to be honest. How do you guys justify it?
      ***** Great video by the way! Love the impression of Hong Kong and their unique stores.

    XBA-H3 owner here and love them for what they are: not neutral, bass heavy with laid back mids and highs (good for casual listening I guess). I've also been eyeing the X5 but you're right about them not being an emotional purchase. Congrats for owning them though! Right now I am considering at the XBA-300AP which is only sold in HK (I think), has 3 BAs instead of a hybrid config, and is priced in the A5 range.

    Lol after watching part 1 I would have never expected you to get the xba z5. I did think you were nuts for not liking them, and something I really love about them are the bass and treble. It feels very pleasing at times. They are beautiful and sound great, better than my previous sennheiser ie60 which are good enough if you don't want to spend too much money. The only complaint about the xba-z5 is that the material of the plugs that go into the earphones somehow scratch the inside of my ears and left some cut marks. Well I guess love hurts. I fixed this by using the plugs from my ie60 and now they are perfect!

    I feel your pain, Lachlan. I suffer from analysis paralysis so much. I'll spend hours reading and re-reading reviews, spec sheets, combing stores and online vendors for prices, checking the used values on eBay...
    Actually I'd say my analysis paralysis is probably what's stopping me from seriously going in on a pair of CIEMs, because I can't really demo them, especially not in America, where audio is treated more like fast food than fine dining. :(
    I'm actually still in love with my IM70s and have felt quite content with them. I just need a better pair of home headphones because while my JVCs are good for $30, the build quality is just not there and already something is rattling around inside one of the ear cups. x_x The IM70s are also making me realize just how lacking the RX700s are in the bass department.
    I need something else. I want AKG K712 Pros, but I _cannot_ in any way, shape or form afford them... (plus I'd need to get an amp).

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety +1

      ***** Oh excellent! I am really looking forward to your impressions of it, because even though I do have the IM70, I would go in for IM02 if it can even come close to Ety levels of detail.
      And yeah, got my ear to the ground discounted K712s. I will wait and bide my time, patiently, lying in ambush and ready to strike... :D

    I've got the 400i, great pair of headphones. To call it a fun headphone is an overstatement because that makes it sound like it's a v shaped headphone. I'd say it shares some similarities to the dark sounding LCD2. I was a bit disappointed with the 560 as they didn't sound different enough to be worth nearly double the price.

  • @Daniel-md1fm
    @Daniel-md1fm Před 9 lety +6

      Did you find the X2's to be of greater or lesser value then the K712s? Just based of First impressions of course. I've been told that the K712s are a very articulate headphone.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety

      I think it depends on what price you can find on them. I'm not really familiar with the street price of the X2 at this point. Of course you have to also consider the Massdrop AKG K7xx!

    The thing that impressed me the most about Sony XBA A series was the vast improvement of A1 over XBA H1. I believe H1 costed $99 at first, and that is how much the A1 costs right now. At the same price, A1 is a huge improvement over the H1 and I wouldn't be surprised if you recommended it to us if you ever happen to own it.

    Once again Lachlan, you did not disappoint with another headphone expedition. But darn it, I was SURE you were gonna go back to that first store to grab up that set of cans you were thinking about.
    To be honest, I couldn't justify spending sayyy $500 CAD [ALOT of $ for me], on a set of earbuds. That I would have rather spent it on an open back set of Audio Technica's. I guess if I were to defend that decision, I would have to say that given the price of high-end audio gear, I would want to get a big bulky set of drivers like say, the ATH-Ad1000x. Because it's a rather large set of cans, I would feel as if I would have got better value?....Does that make sense?

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 6 lety +1

      It makes sense, but I’ve gotten a lot of happy use out of my z5s compared to even a lot of my larger headphones. Maybe it also depends on where you do most of your listening?

    • @proudcanadian9816
      @proudcanadian9816 Před 6 lety

      I get that. Because if you are on the go, traveling or around in the city, you want to pack light, and bulky headphones won't work. But if your doing long distance hauls, you can then go for a bigger set. Like when my wife and I go on vacation, I bring 3 sets of headphones
      1. Bose QC25 noise canceling; cuts out jet noise, screaming unruly kids, etc etc, or at home playing video games.
      2. Bose in-ears for when I'm floating around the airport waiting for a flight, or maybe just downtown at home
      3. Apple earbuds, for when I know I will be in a situation at home [at the mall where I don't wanna flash my "EAR-BLING", or on vacation [beach]
      I ALWAYS evaluate where I am going to be, or what I'm going to be doing, and select the appropriate headphone or earbud. I'm a practical guy :-)

    Hey Lach,
    I own a pair of ath-m50s for at home use and a pair of JVC-HAS500s for outside use. Would you recommend i buy th sennheiser momentums for at home AND outside use? I have found a new pair for 175€ instead of the 299€/240€ normal retail price. I am really tempted to get them while i can :S

    • @chopcookies
      @chopcookies Před 9 lety +3

      Go in a store and try them on. Comfort was always a problem for many people, so its worth trying it at some local store. As for sound the momentums will sound somewhat more lively and open with some peaks in the treble and bass, as opposed to the m50's just having a boost in the bass if I resemble correctly. But the m50's, you most likely will find, has better resolution and imaging.
      For that price the momentums seem like a good deal, but as I mentioned earlier best bet is trying them at a local store and see if its worth the 175€ TO YOU!

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety

      Good comments :) it's very much worth trying to see if the smaller earcup size of the Momentum will work for you for longer term use. The M50 should have more of a artificial peak in the treble compared to the Momentum.

      @BazedLi Před 9 lety

      Hmm i see. I will give them a good listen if i can find a store that has them :/ Maybe ill just buy them online and send them back if i dont like them. I will have to pay shipping costs twice but that is an acceptible evil. Thanks guys :)

      They're releasing the Momentum 2.0s which have bigger earcups and are foldable as well as a wireless version if you wanted to wait.

    • @adamnelson8572

      Not to mention featuring active noise canceling as well. However the price is $500 USD, nearly twice what the original model is selling for, so it's for debate whether the new features are worth the significant price hike.

    Are there any headphones better looking than the beats? I feel as if they want to compete to sell more headphones they could invest in the design more. I mean Sony has amazing designs on their futuristic phones, tablets and tvs. They can make a very appealing design that cab very well look better than beats with their amazing audio quality.

      Just like sound, I think looks are very subjective. I personally think the SH Momentum is one of the sexiest things ever conceived by mankind. We sleep together every night. Others will turn their nose up at it. Everyone has different feelings regarding the looks of their headphones and the importance of that. After all, headphones have become a bit of a fashion accessory among hip young people. While I prioritize sound above all else, design is still pretty important to me. I don't really care for Beats that much. The plasticky look and the bright colors aren't doing it for me.

    Ah... the classic *_"To buy, or not to buy..."_* inner monologue.
    I always do that to everything I buy online. Well, in terms of stuff I _want_ to buy and not necessarily _need_ to buy. Though most of them usually ends up with the item being sold out.
    About the Sony IEMs, I'm actually more interested in the lower A-series: the A1 and A2. A1 because I want to see (or hear?) if they actually fixed the H1. A2 because it's pretty similar to the A3 with difference being the smaller dynamic driver and the _conventional_ form factor.
    I'm kinda skeptical about Sony's (new?) house sound for their flagships. They keep toting around the whole *"Hi-Res AUDIO"* thing but having a very dark sound keeps it from being "Hi-Res". Reason being is that the main advantage of "Hi-Res" audio is that it keeps the upper range complete and with lossy removing most of the detail in those ranges, _according to Sony_. Also, the treble region often give people the illusion of detail.
    gomen for rambling

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  Před 9 lety

      I am interested in the A1 as well! The interesting thing about the A3 / Z5 is that despite being very dark, the BA tweeter does its job and the treble is very detailed as well. I think the A5 and the A3 are the best versions of this new sound so far. At least better than the 1A and the Z7.
