- ‘Big’ is such a subjective word, especially in surfing. ‘How big is it’ is probably one of the most asked questions in all of surfing. The answers are always different.
Now, scale those questions up to mountain-sized, and you’re left with whatever happened at Nazare over the weekend - with Lucas Chumbo surfing the biggest wave of the day, perhaps in his life as the man himself says, in conditions that really shouldn’t have been surfable.
We tapped up Mr Chumbo to talk us through his decision to get out there, the wind, is onshore the new offshore? And a few more bits. Hit play!

sick wave. this focus is the reason i'm a manual focus guy, especially from a distance since it's so close to or at infinity.
Such a shame we can't see it but congratulations!
Brazilian surfing is impressive....show Congratulations Brazil
Congratulations Chumbolino
Merci Lucas CHUMBO
The white water when the wave crashed was over 60 feet… unreal
👍👍👍
How long can Chumbo hold his breath?
Long enough 😂
Most big wave surfers can hold their breath to around 5, some a bit longer. But 5 minutes in still water translates to maybe 30 seconds when you're under a big wave.
The WR is finally back again to Brazil :)
The only world record Brazil has is the number of dogs that go to other country’s and drop in on locals . Bunch of muppets
