My husband was in his army uniform and a guy outside of a gas station asked for money. We were broke, he had maybe 5 bucks to get gas and get home that night. Well my husband gave his guy that 5 bucks. As he turns around to leave, this guys yells back "come on, man! you're white! you got more than that!".
Over the last few years, my husband has gone from being the guy who would give you the clothes off this back to being incredibly suspicious and jaded of people "in need" because of experiences like that. And generic obvious scams.

A few years ago, I walked out of a dollar store, and a male asked me for money to buy food for his kids. I didn't have any cash and I had spent the last $20 on my card. Times were tough and I was struggling financially but I knew what it felt like to be hungry. I felt bad and wanted to help. I offered him the food I had just purchased (bread, mayo, turkey lunch meat, cheese, potato chips, cookies, water). He got mad, cursed me out and walked away because he wanted money. I ended up feeling so upset at his response because I was just trying to help. It took me a while to realize that he likely wanted the money for something else...maybe drugs, who knows. The entire situation was a bad experience. Nowadays, If I donate, I always go through a reputable organization.

Looking a bit ratty, whether clothing, car, or home, is a certain amount of protection. Thieves don't want to steal from people who have nothing of value, it's a waste of their time and taking chances for nothing.
When someone comes begging to me, they'd better be ready for the air to turn blue...I don't put up with it. When I've been needy in the past, no one ever gave me a helping hand, and I can't stand lazy people. I'm also very much aware that most of them make more money begging than my wife and I make together from our retirement. If you ever want to know if they're legit, pull out your phone and act like you're going to take a picture. They'll run like scared rabbits. Evidence they're just bums, and not needy.

Before Christmas, a woman helped disabled me load my few groceries in my car, "she had stepped up from nowhere" when Walmart staff refused to lift for me. So I drive a 12yr old car. She started gushing what a beeyoutiful car I have. I told her, it's very old and held together by rust. She lifted my groceries. She had her few groceries in her cart, all pet food. It all felt odd. Then she burst into tears. And asked for a hug because her mother died a week ago. I mentally checked my pockets, nothing to steal. Car keys in my hand. So I gave her a hug. Thanked her for her help, and encouraged her for the holidays. But yes these on-going scams left me aware, good, BUT what if she truly was just lonely? I'm feeling that a good many are illegals, and I refuse to give them anything. They need to return home and take their forceful, demanding attitude and change their country for the better. I was approached twice before this kind of scams were common, but both times I said "no" because I felt they were just a little too aggressive. Now, I don't feel so bad. But one night, as I was exiting the store, there was this little girl about 9 or 10 years old standing at the entrance asking me to buy something from her for a charity, like a fundraiser, and she was legitimate. I think she had permission from the store to do what she was doing.
But I was in a hurry to get home and I did not want to turn to her to say "no." So, I just walked past her without saying anything. But as soon as I was about 8 feet away from her. She called me a racial slur, "ch!nk." And she was very lucky I was not in a bad mood, otherwise I would have gone back into that store to have a little chat with the manager to let them know what kind of little girl they gave permission to ask for donations at the front of their store. 😀

When I was at Meijer someone tried that to me a little bit before Thanksgiving. She had a full cart of food and had her two kids with her. She asked if I could pay for her cart of food so her kids can eat. Now, I’m not one to usually judge or assume. But this lady had nice clothes one, her kids also with nice clothes. She’s at Meijer (which yea isn’t super pricey but usually a little more than Walmart) And sometime just click, like why fill a cart with groceries if you’re not going to get them and put your kids through that ordeal?? I told her unfortunately I don’t have money and was using my mom’s food stamps to get her and I dinner for the night (which was true) so I couldn’t afford to pay for her groceries. She just moved on to the next person.

The problem we're having is our willingness to try and help people who confront us directly. I've suggested to people I know and don't know who do this, that they find out where the nearest shelters, soup kitchens, and pantries are in the areas they frequently visit or live in and make a donation to those facilities. Because it is difficult to know who is scamming you and who is legitimately in need. And if necessary advocate for more facilities in their area. There is no shame in saying no with a solution than just saying no. Those in need will appreciate what information you provide and those who don't just want your money. I stopped beggars from congregating in my area by standing on the corner and passing out a list of places that are in place to help them, to people who think they are doing something good. When what they were doing was drawing more of them to that particular spot. What amazes me is they complained about them being there. One woman asked my guy for the receipt and he said, “No, I paid for this, not you.” They rolled the cart out of the store (Walmart) and we watched to see where they went. They rolled across the parking lot to where the gas station was. When they got there, a group of people emerged from some vans and they conversed. We kept watching, they took the items and then the same two women pushed the cart back to store. Likely, to scam another person. I will never to do that again. They'd ask me to buy their groceries because whatever they wanted wasn't covered by EBT/SNAP, then they'd offer to use their SNAP benefits to buy an equal value of mine. I never went for it because I had the good fortune of recognizing the first one to approach me with it as a street beggar. She had mysteriously lost her disability, regained her leg, and stopped the endless crying to come shopping. If their benefits are legit, they don't need your help to get them. Now, if you are talking about buying something for a family member who can’t seem to get their act together, that’s a different thing. Because if they return that item they’re going to come back to you crying that they needed it again. So yeah that would make sense. But if you’re dealing with a stranger, sure go ahead and keep the receipt because it probably has the last four of your credit card number on it.
