@@senecaturtles yes, at one time I did auto adjustments for State Farm. But now currently only do property damage claims.

Nice video! I’ve been putting off purchasing my adjuster course. I’m really interested in becoming a desk adjuster but my problem is wanting to research so much that I end up getting confused and wondering if I should really drop the money to do something I’m not sure about. I guess with anything it takes time and patience to learn. Really looking for remote positions and even to work independently so I can stay home and also still be a mom to my young one
It's a great career choice but it does take time to get rolling. Definitely worth it!
Ditto! I tend to get fixated on researching and NEVER taking action. The Xactimate piece (and not knowing exactly what it is) was definitely scare me off...lol!
Anyway, if you decided to pursue this endeavor, please share with us how it is going for you.
Don’t give up. It seems hard at first but well worth it.
Simply just really grateful for your help in seeing this for the first time. Takes the worry out of most the process. I am considering with my experience in managing 60 million dollar high rise buildings and also industrial properties as well as extensive work with residential and real estate. I just think that storms are not going away and empty neater I can retire as an adjuster just need to start the process. Any suggestions. I also worked with several difficult insurance companies on residential. So I know the pit falls and a former adjuster turned roofer has helped me a great deal in learning what's covered and what isn't.
You have excellent experience that will definitely help you in this business. The road is the same for everyone, but the additional experienced people in other trades, will get the opportunities faster. What about for example, a customer hires a general contractor where the roof and siding is be replaced. He subs the roof to a roofing crew, subs the siding to a siding crew, subs the gutter and fascia to a gutter company, subs electrical to remove exterior lights and power meters so siding can be replaced, subs an HVAC company to disconnect and reconnect lines from several heat pumps so siding can be replaced, and subs to a drywall contractor to repair drywall damage around several skylights that were replaced with the roof. That is 6 trades involved. Does something like that warrant the insured to use a general contractor and warrant the general contractor to be paid that 10% for overhead and 10% for profit?
Typically the insurance company looks for any opportunity to combine trades. Roofers are their own contractor and don’t need a supervisor. Typically siding, facia, and gutters are the same. This can be the same over many different trades. If the job is small, the insurance company will not pay overhead and profit. Typically, they’re looking for anything over $25,000 in the repair estimate, to potentially justify overhead and profit. But if it’s just roof and siding, they wouldn’t pay for it. I’ve seen overhead and profit included on large interior jobs or large exterior jobs like a tree falling on the house. But wind, O&P wouldn’t be added. It’s a fine balance, but the insurance company will let you know if they will pay for it or not.
Thanks for the video, Got a question. Why you change the 4-12 slope roof to a 10-12 slope, instead of 6 or 8-12? Just for demonstration purposes?

I just passed the Adjusters course to receive the Texas license. Also took the Xactimate training. Should of asked this question in class but was trying to just take in what was being thrown out there. I do not understand how you get the measurements of the roof so you can draw it. I have watched many videos and did not see anyone actually measuring the perimeter of the roof.
Congratulations!! The main measurements when drawing a roof using a tape measure is the rake, and the ridge, sometimes the valley is a good measurements to get. Once you draw it in Xactimate, using the rake and ridge, you will have the perimeter measurements in the details tab of the sketch. Also ridge, hip, flashing etc. measurements will be there too. Hope this helps

As an adjuster, do you still have to make your own roof sketch with the new measurement programs? On scopes, I've seen some adjusters attach the hover.
@tythompson5152 I sketch everything unless a roof sketch can be imported into the program. Most of the carriers I have used will not just allow a copy of the Hover (etc.) be uploaded into the file because they want annotations on the sketch for where the test square was taken, and where the wind damage was etc. Hover will typically import into XM8, so this is a good one to use.

You are welcome. That XM8 code does not come to mind. Try the search feature in XM8

Yes, every process in construction is not fully represented in XM8. Sometimes a misc line under the trade can be added as long as a note is included.

Hi Daniel, I just had roof inspected at my personal home and the person who came just did the damage inspection and photos. i asked questions of course for my personal knowledge since I am newly licensed and he said he didnt do the estimating part, he did the inspection part. What type of title would he be called? i was under inpression the damage inspectors were adjusters as well. he said someone else would do the adjusting part after he sent in all the photos and his report.
I have been seeing a trend toward this type of inspection. I think it helps the insurance company see the houses faster if they don't have to wait for the adjuster. A lot of adjusters can estimate from the photos so that they don't have to go back out. As long as the inspector is not making a decision, I think they can do this. They will make much less money doing this than will an adjuster. Just keep that in mind.

Yes, you can. Check with the carrier that you work for, sometimes they can order it for you.
So I'm starting training for my IA license this week. My question is this - Is the expensive Xactimate training offered by the different IA training groups worth the extra $295 or so? Or can I download the Xactimate demo and follow along with a training video like yours and expect to have a pretty good idea of how to use the software effectively? Thanks for any advice. Any and all training that teaches you the software is good to know. Personally, since CZcams has come around, there are hundreds if not thousands of videos teaching Xactimate. No need to purchase a course when there is free information out there. Just need to take the time to watch them, study the concepts, and master the program. It is not rocket science. Quick question. When you get deployed for a hail storm or any catastrophe. Would we need to do a sketch for every claim? I'm new to this, I've heard carriers typically don't require a sketch. Any input greatly appreciated!
Absolutely have to do a sketch. I have never heard of a carrier allowing a claim to be submitted without a sketch. Handled over 5000 claims. I’m not sure where you got that information from.

A local roofing contractors here in Dallas, Tx is also an IA and he was saying not to worry about sketch since carrier's don't require it during a CAT. Also something about eagles view diagram being included with claims more often now so the sketch will automatically upload. Not sure if that's true or not
Correct, Eagleview is used a lot more, but we still have to put our annotations on the roof even if it does import the sketch. Any interior damage will have to be sketched. It is nice on the catastrophe events that a lot of the carriers use Eagleview. But don’t get used to it because there are a lot that don’t use it, on regular daily claims. You need to be ready to draw the roof and the interior if needed.

I am with three and two did a back ground check and one did a drug test .. 3rd one is top 3 but refuses to spend money on background check .. I am with pilot , alacrity . I did rope and harness with pilot .. are you recommending to have more than 3 major cat company , certf with usaa, state farm . .
At one time, I was on 40 rosters. I weeded out the ones I didn’t want to work for and at one time was consistently working for about six. It’s nice to have options. If you don’t have work, sign up for a bunch more. You can always drop them later.
is that 40 with background check or just 40 applications
I think I had 5-6 with background checks, the rest were just extensive paperwork. I found that some of the smaller firms were able to provide me work faster than the big ones. Look on catadjuster.org for the list. Just my two cents.
When I add my room it pretty much the same size of the roof...why? And how would I make it smaller?

Thank you for so much for this, just playing around with the system, if the claimant’s address and phone number is different from the loss address and phone number, is there somewhere we would input this or just in our file notes?
Xactimate has a way to put in several addresses and several phone numbers under the claim info tab. Definitely change it, and make the primary phone number, the number that you reached the insured.
The reason why this is important to change, is the price for the estimate may change, because the line items are based on the ZIP Code. It could affect your estimate dramatically.

Congratulations! Xactimate as a desk adjuster is used mostly on the back end for minor changes. The field adjuster is going to do the sketch.

How I can print list of category and selector?
To get a list of all of the categories printed, go to the search TAB in an estimate, click on SEARCH PRICE LIST, click on what category you want to print (can't do them all at once) RIGHT CLICK on the first line item, go to OTHER OPTIONS, then SELECT ALL. Once highlighted, RIGHT CLICK, the SEND LIST TO, then EXCEL. you can print and save from this page. This will give you all the line items. As far as categories, I'm not sure it can print those, but you can look under Reference search.

I typically use the highest tax rate, that has to do with improvements. That’s a typical tax rate for remodeling.

Do you pay for Xactimate yourself or is the software provided by the carrier(s) you work with?
If you are a desk adjuster, then normally that is included in the computer that you work on. As a field adjuster, you’ll have to pay this monthly. If you work for a big firm, like Alacrity, they get a discount for the software, and they will allow you to utilize the discount, if you work claims for them.

It would be good for you to take a course from one of the adjusting firms to help you. Or you could watch my videos. I have a lot of help in there.
OandP can cover gutters and windows and fencing. So OandP at 10 percent is very common.
Overhead & Profit is something insurance companies try their best to not include. If a contractor is self-employed, (eg fence installer, gutter guy, window guy, roofer, etc) then the insurance company holds on to the fact that they do not need supervision to do their job, thus O&P is not needed. Only on the super big claims, can we add O&P. Keep that in mind.
@@danieltheadjuster I found in working with my roofer that LM was an absolute no on O&P. Farmers and State Farm would sometimes include it and sometimes you could fight for it. No matter the size project. Oddly LM paid for O&P on fence but not on roof. As an adjuster all that fight will be left to the insured and insurance. Adjusting takes me out of it. Less stress. Yet I learned so many ways insurance would short change contractors. Programs that didn't include labor and or price increases etc. Learned their games and now I will just be able to leave it all up to others.
I want to get licensed in multiple states and move around like FEMA. Explore the country and get paid for it.

I typically make my front of the house the bottom of the drawing entering from the bottom of the page in Xactimate.
That would make the left side left, the right side on your right.
So you do not need a windows computer anymore to run the new xactimate?
No, you have to use a windows 10 computer and/ or use the iPad.

The title is a bit misleading. Good video for beginners that don’t know anything about adjusting. You’re talking about changing the date loss and finding the pricing list geez i hope folks know this Adj 101. I was looking to see the different features and changes from xm28.5 vs X1
Thanks for your comment. We don’t really have a choice when it comes to upgrades. Xactimate changed from 28 to X1 and didn’t give us much of an option. But X1 is definitely a little different than 28, but it doesn’t really matter, we just adjust!!

@danieltheadjuster Hey Question for ya. You mentioned using an actual camera when adjusting. I see xactimate has an app and allows you to take pictures directly in the app and then you can label those photos right then. What are your thoughts on that?
I’ve tried the app, and I feel like it’s slow and cumbersome. For me, I just don’t care to use it. My camera takes photos and records them to a card, I take the card out, put it into my computer, and it’s a piece of cake. Everyone can use their own systems, I choose to stay with this one forever.
