And you can't just "have healthy people go about things normally and protect the vulnerable" ... what, do you take school kids away from their vulnerable parents? Because what works for LA and NY (questionable at the rate people are leaving) doesn’t work for Sioux Falls SD. It was by design. And when it comes to parliament vs a 3 branch system, I think I’ll go with the one parliament asked to bail them out of 2 large military conflicts, and put a man on the moon 🇺🇸. The competence of the voters to understand local people and local matters, and for the people they deem to be competent by popular vote to bring these concerns to higher levels of government, without requiring every single voter to understand every single part of the large machine that is our government.

      @Ericwvb2 Před 3 lety +6

      @Marc Rittner It's not working because only swing states get any attention. The Electoral College was originally set up to give the slave states more power so they would agree to join the union. Slaves could not vote, so a direct election would mean the North would have far more political power than the South. With the "3/5 compromise" and the electoral college, slave states would get additional political representation and still prevent their slaves from being able to vote.

      @Marc Rittner I feel like the Electoral College now only gives the advantage to the states mostly populated by people who want to make America white again. It clearly doesn't give the majority of the country an advantage. Look at George Bush and Al Gore. Trump and Hillary they clearly lost but thanks to the Electoral College they won

      @daemn42 Před 3 lety +4

      Disclaimer: This is an explanation, not an endorsement for or against.
      We have never been a true democracy in that all the eligible electorate can vote on an issue at the national level. We've always been a representative government (electing only the representatives to govern for us), but the founders recognized that we needed a mix of state based and population based representatives, which is why every state gets 2 Senators to represent the state's interests as a whole, and House gets a number of representatives in proportion to their states's population. The electoral college is meant to meld these two together which is why there are the same number of electors as there are total state representatives, and electors must be chosen from the public and cannot themselves be office holders to attempt to avoid corruption and established party-line voting.
      The most obvious problem with the modern version of the electoral college is that because most states have fallen reliably into firmly red or blue category, the presidential elections fight over about 10 so called swing states and ignore all the rest.
      The problem with abolishing the electoral college and letting only the national popular vote determine the presidential ticket is that more than half of our total population resides in about 10 states (CA, TX, FL, NY, PA, IL, OH, GA, NC, MI), so most presidential campaign promises would target those states, ignoring all the rest. If you live in Maine or Wyoming or Alaska you might as well not exist.
      Now to add some context to what the founders were thinking when they created this system.
      1. They really didn't trust "the masses" as a whole to make informed decisions.
      2. National scale elections that gathered votes from all eligible voters in a short period of time was simply not viable at that time, and some would argue perhaps not even now. Early on some of the states even missed the deadline for getting their electors votes in. The constitution *only* specifies that the states choose a set of electors from the public, and how many there are. It doesn't tell the states how to choose them. Many states initially had their own state legislatures choose the electors, and only over time did they move to allowing them to be chosen by popular vote of the people.
      3. They originally envisioned that the electors would all be free agents chosen by the people and then could vote for president and vice president responsibly. The creation of the limited party system as we know it, caused this to break down, and eventually the states all bound the electors choice to the popular vote. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this binding rule challenged in the courts following the 2020 election. Imagine if the new majority minority population flips the state popular vote from red to blue in a traditionally red state (say TX or AZ), and then some electors choose to not vote for the blue candidate. It's 2020, so why not.
      4. Slavery both in the north and south and the 3/5ths compromise.. It's complicated and despicable of course, but the short of it is that southern states gained about 1/3rd more representative power in congress relative to the northern states and the same proportion more electors by counting their slaves as 3/5ths of a person, without actually allowing them to vote. This compromise baked into the wording of the Constitution (Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3) by the founders, makes them *all* responsible.
