Before They Are Hanged is my favourite book in the trilogy because of the developing relationships and the journey they go on.

I liked this book the least in the trilogy, but after reading the third one, I appreciated it so much more. The Logan portrayal stuck in my head, especially how other people in the group saw him, and later when he reunites with his “old friends”, we get to see their perspective. That was so real, and I am not talking about Bloody Nine. I think that the ability to transfer all those messy, destructive human traits to paper is best shown in Logan, and in this book, we get to see his “good” side.

  • @vaughnroycroft999

You've given a solid explanation of why I prefer large casts and mulit-POVs over first person. And, yeah, particularly seeing protagonists from other POVs, at least periodically, and particularly during middle books in series, is satisfying as hell. It's a good cure (among other things) for murky middles, IMO.

On my 2nd re-listen of "Before They Are Hanged" right now, and I'm enjoying it a lot more this time around. I think I was annoyed with it the first read through, mainly how the journey concluded, but now I see it in the broad scheme of things and it makes a lot of sense.

hooray! imo Best Served Cold - the first of the standalones - might be better than the trilogy, but not so for The Heroes and Red Country. His new trilogy though, that's the best yet!

    Absolutely agree with you,
Sometimes the second book will definitely stand out after the first book.
I recently viewed you video on Traitors Blade,
    I will admit,
    I loved the first book,
    But,
Reading the second book, Nights Shadow was everything you said about Before The Are Hanged,
It was truly a wider better visionary than the first.
Just thought I throw that in there.🤘

Heroes is ehhh...it's ok. Red Country I rather enjoyed. But Best Served Cold is fantastic as are the Age of Madness books. Abercrombie is definitely one of the best doing it right now. When I read his stuff or Brian Mcclellan's work, I can't help but think what a great time it is to be a fantasy reader.

  • @thecontradictorian2225

I never end up loving the middle book more than the first or the last, it’s always a disappointment (*cough* Siege and Storm). This is the one exception to that rule. This thing transformed me from “Duh, I thought Abercrombie was better” to “‘My Lord and Saviour, Lord Grimdark”. Jezhal’s development in this one is just chef’s kiss.

Wow, the First Law UK hard cover! I thought they were a myth. Do you have the whole trilogy? Wait, how many copies of First Law do you actually own? xD
SPOILER FOR BEFORE THEY ARE HANGED!!!
    .
    .
    .
I just love Joe's spin on the epic journey trope. They travel all this way around the world for freakin' nothing (yeah, we get the character and relationship development but you know what I mean). At first I was pissed off but then I actually found it hilarious. It's such a HA! in the reader's face and I love it.
For selfish reasons, I think you should consider making a list of the best First Law moments, quotes and/or characters when you finish the series. I just want to laugh out loud at the genius of Abercrombie's writing again but I read them all last year so don't feel like rereading them so soon. xD
