In a beautifully worded and performed farewell to (his performance as) the 11th Doctor Who, Matt Smith's speech is unique in that it breaks the 'fourth wall' - he's addressing NOT JUST Clara 'Impossible Girl' Oswald, but, to ALL Doctor Who fans.
the one scene i felt where Matt wasn't talking as a Doctor, but as an actor having to let go of a role he dearly loved.
"I will always remember, when the Doctor was Me . . . "
In a way it feels like all the Doctors do that, or at least ever since 2005 when the show returned. Each of them said something before their regeneration that can also be interpreted as their actor saying how they enjoyed the role or how they need to let it go. David Tennant even started acting so he could play The Doctor, so his final words of “I don’t want to go” could be him not wanting to leave the role.
@@supersonicheroes i completely agree - all the doctors in their last words have at least one line that feels like the actors are speaking, and it's probably the only time i think it fits. It's nice to know they appreciate it; Tennant loving the doctor since he was a kid, and frankly for Matt it was a break role for him. So to see their understanding that they were part of something big is so nice.

Apparently when Matt read the script for his regeneration he got emotional and Moffat had to comfort him
Eccleston's last words were "You were fantastic, and you know what? So was I"
That last phrase was like a fuck you to BBC who clashed with him continuously.

Anytime I watch a regeneration episode the moment it happens I always make sure to say “goodbye _______, Hello _______”.
I love the New Who exits for this reason: they convey not only the Doctor's feelings, but the actor's as well (at least partially). I will always remember when the Doctor was Matt, and I never wanted for Ten to go. I will always think that Eccleston's run was absolutely fantastic, and I will always take a moment to get things right with Capaldi.
i am so so glad they brought Amy back for this - Clara was always fine, but the chemistry between the doctor and Amy (not romantically, just in a sense that they worked really well together) was so much better. I was crying the second Amy stepped onto scene, so happy Karen Gillan came back for it.
She was like The Doctors family. That's what I loved about them all together.

Honestly, Clara really had potential, even in the initial vaguely romantic-from-both-sides version that they had during season 7, but she was failed by the writing. More specifically, the writing process. Basically no one writing any episode with her in it before Day of the Doctor had any clue who she was even supposed to be. Entire episodes were written based on the Dalek Asylum audition dialogue, or thinking she was a victorian governess, and the need to kind of clean things up accordingly is what held her back. In a show where episodes were written in a Writer's Room rather than by one individual at a time, she could have been every bit as great as Amy ever was.
Matt smith gave so much life in his already amazing role as the doctor.

When the orchestra began playing the long song was when I finally understood that he wasn’t really leaving. He’s just letting welcoming the change of time. They are a lord of it after all.

The one thing i understand is that his character arc, from the one who forgot, become the one who will always remember. The Denial, now acceptance. The doctor, he always will be. Always.

This speech is so true to life we are never the same person throughout our lives and we change because of our experiences and we always remember who we where before and after the experiences brilliant and in my opinion the best last speech by the doctor

I love the feeling that this wasn’t something the doctor said, but that Matt said as his true feelings as he ended as the doctor. I can just imagine him coming on set for the last day of recording, and everyone getting ready and he starts something new, and everyone is just so so quiet as he pours his heart out. That Clara’s reaction was real, that she really cried.

11 and Clara, they’ve always been and always will be my favorites. Fellow Whovians may not agree, but it will always be the two of them for me. Such memories.
9th - 11th doctors were my childhood, I understand the love that DT gets for the role but for me MS narrowly bests him.

i was a benge watcher of doctor who because i watched it in early 2020 or late 2019 so it was really sad because matt was the first doctor that I watched, and before i finish his final season i decided to watch all the other doctors in the new series and matt smith doctor was really sad to see go

I saw this episode like a week ago or something, and I thought it was sad... BUT not as sad as David Tennant's "I don't want to go".. fucking cried my eyes out. UNTIL I read a post about when Matt Smith regenerates and they mention him looking and talking into the camera saying this line, like he's saying it directly to the audience.
Aaaand I cried my eyes out again - didn't think about it until I read that post.

Critics say it was a regret for his 'dead mans halucination' of Amy , but i think its fitting for him , as a doctors personality is based on the emotion the previous regeneration had while regenerating , he was clingy to his companions due to 10 dying lonely , so its fitting how he had his best friend and first companion was the one to give him the final goodbye to him
Ill rephrase the last bit *it was more of a last goodbye from Amy , his best friend , first friend and loyalest companion*
Also the reason people say he looked crazy/drunk , he aged previously , hes an old man of course hes gonna act like one now that hes gone through that.
Four and Five both saw previous companions before dying so why not?

I am late but his regenerations got more and more violent in the new series. It makes sense that a completely "new" cycle will be the strongest one....at least for me.

The better question is why doesn't the TARDIS interior change for 12? It changed during 11's era and then it stayed that way from what I could tell when he regenerates in the TARDIS it forces the TARDIS to also regenerate but now it seems less powerful until 13 becomes 14 then it looks even more powerful and back to not being as spectacular when 14 becomes 15
I can relate to Eleven the most. Goofy most of the time, but serious when he needs to be. Eleven went out with dignity. More than I can say for Ten’s whiny “I don’t want to go.” Thank you, Matt Smith, you’ll always be my Doctor.
Whiny? Life was a big adventure for him, he had so much left to do still, lives that he felt still needed him, connections that only 10th would have. There was nothing 'whiny' about that moment. Even people who accept they are dying don't WANT to die, and for once 'The Lonely God' wasn't lonely - he had a whole gaggle of companions, enough to steer the Tardis like it was always meant to be! For a moment, the most powerful man in the universe was vulnerable and oh-so-sublimely-human. Relatively immortal or not, he did NOT want to let go of all he'd done and still had left to do, leaving behind the people he loved and that loved him. Because he knows from experience that the next Doctor would be just that: The NEXT Doctor. Not him, just a new person with all of his memories.
For a moment he wasn't the thousand year old alien whom all the villains of the universe from dawn to dusk feared, whom countless planets called out for when darkness fell.
He was just a man, who didn't want it to end.
10 had reason to be sad... since he only lived for SEVEN years! While eleven lived for what EONS.
