My first encounter with JA was "The Shattered Sea" series a few years back. It was, imo, competent but rather mundane. As our intrepid reviewer notes the ingredients are there but not fully cooked. Frankly, I had no desire to ever seek out a JA book after reading this series,
But then I stumbled across LL about two years back, and she was so enthusiastic about The First Law books that I had to, at least, give 'em a chance. And a convert was born.

I couldn't disagree with you more! 😅Well, except for the third book. That one didn't work because it had one POV too many. I think it would have been better if the two guys were combined into one character. But I love the first book. I defy you to list all the things that happen to Yarvi and then say again with a straight face that the book isn't dark. And the second one? Abercrombie takes his style of characters and puts them in a YA romance, hitting all the tropes while doing it? I laughed my ass off! So good. I enjoyed your video anyway because think this series deserves more attention, and I think there are people out there who's curiosity will be peaked by this who will end up really liking it.

I read Shattered Sea a few weeks after Red Queen's War and it came across as a vastly inferior Broken Empire clone. I had read First Law at the time but Shattered Sea made me write off Abercrombie as all hype no bite. Once I read more Abercrombie a few years later I realised I was wrong but SS really made me reconsider any of the Fantasy Community's hyping of an author.

  • @SuperBondfan007

I read The Shattered Sea trilogy last year, and really liked it. I gave them each high marks on GR. Before that, the only thing I read by Mr. Ab. was the OG First Law trilogy, which I thought was decent; didn't love it, didn't hate it (But do want to continue in the First Law universe at some point). I think I was spoiled for the nuclear twist before going into book 3, but I do remember the "magic" being weaponry, and I thought that was neat.
