I also love how two people who are so smart and well read and agree and disagree so much.
The thing about Shakespeare is that his stories have been retold so many times in so many ways with so many different interpretations and settings that we have all loved something that is essentially a Shakespeare story, such as Lion King, West Side Story, or countless others.
Harry Potter 5 is also my favorite 🙏

Regarding GRRM, I am reminded of a quote from Steven Sondheim regarding being a creative elderly person. He said that as you become a senior, it becomes increasingly easy to get into your own head and see all the flaws of what you are doing, as well as worrying about your own legacy knowing you are already highly regarded. He said that like 15 years ago, explaining why he would never write a new show, so it can only have gotten worse since then with the internet.
I also really enjoyed the Shakespeare book. For more about arguments for the Stratford theory, the Stratfordians wrote a book titled Shakespeare Beyond Doubt.
A book was released to combat those arguments similarily titled Shakespeare Beyond Doubt? (with an added question mark). They go into the arguments for the Shakespeare of Stratford.
I was always in the library as kid, but I don’t remember reading any fiction until I was a young teenager (or maybe 12). As a kid, I only read all the nonfiction books my library had on animals.
When I did start reading fiction, The Hardy Boys Casefiles were my entry. I also read nearly all the crossovers with Nancy Drew, but I only bought three of The Nancy Drew Files. I’m looking at them all on my shelves now. I’m 44.

All the Cielcin should have extra joints in their limbs. There should be more than one elbow on each arm. Their limbs are disproportionately long too.

Not to be that guy, but I definitely don't see the hype. I finished book one and I still didn't care for the main character (except in the scene where he was slapped by that priest and when he sees his mother for the last time). The prose is not bad, but it's not good either. It's inconsistent and clunky, a bit like Malice. The amount of times Hadrian tries to prove to readers that he's good looking was annoying. At one point someone supposedly even compared him to an Ancient Greek statue which was extremely cringe for an author to include. The same criticism holds about Hadrian's language skills. On the other hand his inferiority complex about his height was so bizarre. There were so many unnecessary filler stories that not only didn't add anything to the book, it felt like a Wheel of Time kind of moment of this might be the worst thing I've read. The worst parts were the surface level "debates," about religion and politics and the author packaging them as he's saying something particularly witty was just unbearable. It's like he just took a beginner's intro to philosophy and didn't even complete that and just regurgitated cliches. Then he somehow made the Ottomans as some eugenicist people who cared about purity when the Ottoman Empire was one of the most racially mixed empires in existence. There were so many allusions to again surface level history but terribly executed. I would've been able to overlook all this, if the world just felt expansive and interesting, but he doesn't even manage to convey that. There are some interesting ideas, but Ruocchio is definitely the wrong author for this kind of book.
I think I would prefer my friends hating my favorite book than being that meh on it. 😂

45:11 Completely agree with that. Even though though I'm not overly fond of the books, Peter F. Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga does one of the best jobs I've read, in that respect.
When it comes to Shakespeare, I am in the camp of David Tennant. I don't really care who it was. But whoever did it, he wrote about human nature in a way that's never been bettered.
I've just finished Guns of the Dawn!! at the beginning I really liked the dynamics betweeen Emily and her love interest, but I think Liene is right and it was because I was thinking about Pride and Prejudice, so for me it made sense that they liked each other without that much effort by the author. But I was sure it was going to be explained why he did does things, I thought Emily had it all wrong (like Lizzie) but it never happened!! So Bookborn is right, that explanation would have made it so much better.
Yeah it didn’t bother me enough to drop a star but for sure a valid criticism

The Devil in White is the worst of the Sun Eater series. Every other book is better than all those that go before.
Bookworm “who hates Shakespeare” Me “I HATE Shakespeare” The works are (to me) heavily overrated, and they’re not set for current era. The stories need to be watched not read, they’re frustrating to read

I agree that plays need to be watched not read. But I believe Shakespeare's stories definitely still have meaning today. Just look at retellings like The Lion King or Sons of Anarchy, or many more.
