This has happened to me twice in the last month (the illegal U-turn right in front of me). The second time was pretty much exactly what happened here, except the car had been at a complete stop for a while, also too far to the right to pass, and decided to make a U-turn without looking just as I was about to pass on the left. The first time I don’t even know what the car was doing… we were going in the same direction with them way ahead of me, me riding in the right shoulder. I guess they accidentally passed their driveway on the right or only like to turn left into it for the wider turn? They made an illegal U-turn onto the opposite side of the road to go the opposite direction, still pretty far ahead but I’m approaching quickly now that they’ve slowed, stopped, and reversed directions. Then to my complete surprise, continued this left U-turn, making a left turn back across my direction of road and into their driveway off the right shoulder I’m in. They were suddenly quickly closing in on the shoulder at a 90° angle to cross it into their driveway, now right in front of me. Like a 270° illegal U-turn to the left instead of just making a 90° right turn. Traveling north and turning west, south, and then east instead of just turning east. I’ve never seen anyone do anything like this in my life, let alone on a 4-lane main road like we were on.
I don’t know who or what was watching over me, but miraculously I didn’t actually get hit either time. No cars were coming in the opposite direction and both times I was able to swing out into oncoming traffic and around at the last second. Both times I had to be near cutout angle on my EUC swerving so hard around them and I’d bet money I would’ve cut out if I didn’t think ahead to lower the cutout angle to the lowest possible. And yet both times I was still within 6 inches of the car at some point during the encounter.
It’s really scared the sh!t out of me. It’s undoubtedly only a matter of time before I actually either get slammed or am forced to slam them. I’ve had other close calls like someone swinging open their driver door open into the bike lane 10 feet in front of me, and I am 100% sure it will happen to me. And there are always still some debilitating injuries are nearly impossible to prevent even with gear. I hope you’re doing okay 😢

Omg. Yeah...that shit is soo scary. I got a broken rib from this accident. But...I'm healed now. Stupid drivers NOT paying attention. I have another video titled bad drivers. Can see all the yahoo's in the bay area and how bad they are about their surroundings.
      Stay safe out there!!! 🤙🤜🤛

Oh damn bro. Sounds like you and I get in about the same number of accidents. 🤣
I get wrecked in this city about once a year. The drivers in California are some of the worst in the nation along with AZ drivers.

Yea don't follow the car too close because they do last minute stuff that we can't react to well enough. I guess they was trying to do a wide u turn maneuver (probably not legal to do so but Im guilty of doing that too) and didn't see you tailing them from behind. Leave a bigger gap so you can have a longer reaction time for that kind of stuff. Good points on cameras though, Ive been lazy with them. Whats the best camera for everyday use? (simple to turn on and turn off, with minimal maintenance and good enough to catch the plates since some cameras///even dash cams suck at doing this)

Yup. Good points. In S.F. there are sooo many uber and lyft drivers....every car that pulls over...you automatically assume it is one of those and just keep driving. If you slowed down for every car that slightly pulled over on the road....would never get anywhere. People also love to double park on the bikepath and let people out there too. So...usually the road is the safest bet...other than this instance. I ride with just a gopro...or if I don't have that...insta 360. 360 camera on the top of your helmet is ideal....bc then you can have a complete full 360 view of your surroundings. 🤙👍
Ride safe..hopefully pic up a camera soon. They really help in these instances.

@AvCluB415 I generally do a slow creep if I have to pass a car with my foot on the brakes in case the car does anything funny. My rule is to always look at the tires of the car. If the tire creeps too close to the lines or if the front tires give any indication of turning edging too close to the painted lines then danger lights starts going in my head.
I have a go pro 11. Hate to have another piece of contraption to attach to my helmet lol

@vtran1082 The gopro 11 will work just fine. Just as long as you have at least one camera running. Just cuts down on the back and forth when you have video evidence.

Glad you are okay! Sucks to have a hairline fracture. I always wear a GoPro for the exact same reason. I don't usually post ride videos but I always have a video of the ride to use as evidence if and when it is needed. It is my EUC dashcam. I also always have my dashcam running in the car.
