- While gazing out from a hilltop in the English countryside, for the first time in forever, Peter Gabriel saw his life clearly. Seven years, six albums, mega-superstardom, and masses of fans with his band Genesis.. yet it had all run its course. Fame wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Peter left it all for a time to focus inward… In fact, this Genesis kept their break up a secret for a year… After some time off Gabriel wrote a classic song, Solsbury Hill, that kicked off one of the greatest solo careers ever. Up next, the story of Peter Gabriel's journey to solo stardom... Next on Professor of Rock.

#classicrock #70smusic #vinylstory #petergabriel
In August 1975, Peter Gabriel wrote a letter announcing his departure from Genesis and personally delivered it to the English press. In it he outlined his reasons for breaking with his seven-year prog-rock project. He said, “I found I had begun to look at things as the famous Gabriel. I had begun to think in business terms; very useful for an often bitten once shy musician, but treating records and audiences as money was taking me away from them. When performing, there were less shivers up and down the spine.”
Peter also cited a strong desire to spend more time with his family which was beginning to suffer in his absence. And finally, he wanted artistic independence. Gabriel wanted to take in a wide variety of experiences. And Genesis, due to its ever-increasing success, had become something of a cookie-cutter machine in Peter’s eyes. Everyone had their set role, and since things were working financially, it didn’t make sense to deviate from that script.
Gabriel could feel his humanity draining out of him and he was losing his creative instincts. He said that getting an idea through "Genesis the Big" meant shifting a lot more concrete than in its early days. But Gabriel wasn’t leaving on bad terms. He still respected his now former bandmates. In fact, Genesis and Gabriel had agreed on the split for about a year before the announcement. In that time, they kept one of rock’s biggest secrets under wraps so Genesis could finish their concert tour of ‘The Lamb’ and find a suitable replacement for Gabriel.
When the story did come to light Peter’s exodus from Genesis was one of the biggest pop-culture shocks of 1975... Many called it an irrational gamble. Daft even. After all, Genesis was on the rise commercially. For more than six years they had built up a loyal following, enough to claim supergroup status, playing stadiums and prestigious venues. Their most recent album, 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, was an epic concept record that raked in critical acclaim and went gold in both the US and the UK. But whether it made financial or professional sense or not, Peter just needed a change.
He was proud of his time with Genesis, but he wasn’t happy with how he was developing as a person. Said Peter, “The success we had so badly wanted when we were beginning was, in the end, a trap. Once we’d achieved that massive popularity we couldn’t develop with any freedom. There were so many people involved, and so much money involved in the band that it seemed a risk to try to change. Everything was geared to preserve us as we were.” And Peter was not willing to stay the same. So, he waved goodbye to the Genesis theatre.... - Zábava
Poll: Who had the GREATEST SOLO CAREER after leaving a band or a band broke up?
Phil Collins
Paul McCarteny
I'll nominate ... Diana Ross ... and Lionel Ritchie.
Ozzy Osbourne
Most likely, Rod Stewart, though Peter Gabriel is my personal choice...we've spoken before about how his 'So' album was like a close Friend that I needed when it dropped....
Solsbury Hill is a song I can't imagine life without.
Amen!
Agreed. Some profound philosophy, and beautiful lyrics.

I really questioned Peter Gabriel's decision at the time. When I heard this song though I was stunned and realized he had made the absolute correct decision. I never would have imagined how incredibly both he and Genesis would evolve post separation.
Both did so well! Thanks for watching!
@@ProfessorofRockThank YOU for the outstanding content!
I actually expected Genesis to fall apart after he left, but it worked out well for both. There were other bands that reached new highs after the frontman left, eg. Peter Greene and Fleetwood Mac, but seldom did it work for both.
All the members of Genesis did well beyond being part of the band.
He actually did pretty great solo, with evidence from the greatest music video of all time.
Hey Adam... Great episode. This song has a deep meaning for me in the way that after 12 years in the US Army in the 90s mostly, I had some really bad PTSD issues and voluntarily committed myself and after working thru a lot of angst and hopelessness, it was time to leave. My father and I have always had a strained relationship but he was the one that came and got me when it was time. He LITERALLY said to "grab your things (John), I've come to take you home". My father has/had no idea who P.G. was and it was just a serendipitous moment. That was over 20 years ago but that memory is crisp. I remember what we were wearing, the smells, the ride home etc. To this day, I cannot get thru this song w/o a tear rolling down my cheek.
I have tears rolling down my cheek reading your story - thank you for sharing this profound moment.
@@mountainousterrain1704 thank you. I had to share. One of the most lucid memories I have. Later on, I told my dad and played the song for him and it brought us closer. Well said. I have definitely learned so much from the professor, he is a wealth of knowledge!!
Taking a chance is always scary. Both you and Peter definitely made the best choice. We all love what you do and gain knowledge. Thanks....
First saw Peter in concert while I was in college in the late 80s and just saw him again on his current tour...have always loved his work, both solo and with Genesis. At our house, a cute story is when my daughter was quite small, I would play Solsbury Hill in the car and one day I heard her singing from the back seat what she thought were the words to the song: "I tell them 'bout the smell of my basement" in place of "what the smile on my face meant"....we still chuckle about that. 😊
That's funny AF
Many people first see peter in college
HA! This is adorable.
Come on, you can tell us -- what did the little girl think "Jeux sans frontières" sounded like?
@@KenLieck IDK, but I thought it was "she's so funky, yeah" like most people 🙂
Professor,
This is MY SONG! I have loved it since I was 10.
It just resonates with me. I look at it from a Spiritual perspective: “Leave your things, I’ve come to take you home.” To me this represents when Jesus takes the believers Soul to heaven.
My family has been instructed to play this at my funeral. Quite a mix, Solsbury Hill, and How Great Thou Art. 😂
Very cool!
I was thinking the same thing!
His album 'So' is a pure masterpiece
I prefer Security myself.
'So' is one of my favorite albums of all time. I listened to it so much in the 80s that I wore out the cassette tape.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gabriel at a pre-release showing of the "Growing Up" live DVD 20 or so years ago. What an absolutely brilliant and friendly person. He was so knowledgeable about all the AV techniques used in the recording and production of the show, and came across as being overtly modest about his own talent and contribution to the final product.
Still a superb live performer today, and a genuinely great advertisement for the human race.
Wow! Thanks for sharing!
He seems really chill.
Sounds like you asked him some excellent questions - what's your field?
So this is kind of cool.
I have a 16 year old son who has great taste in music. Every Thursday we go to Costco to grab a slice of Pizza and we drive around, talk and listen to music. He plays the songs and I drive.
Every time we do this, Solsbury Hill is one of the songs that he plays.
Every time.
Lucky you. My daughter likes Drake etc...lol.
Solsbury Hill is one of those songs that's so Beautiful that every time I hear it, it's almost like hearing it for the 1st time again and again. It's one of those songs that no matter how many times you hear it, it always gives me the chills or goose bumps because it's just that good. And it just has that emotion to it...
I agree!
I love how the use of a 7/4 time signature matches perfectly with the feeling of imbalance in his lyrics. I also love how the intro splits the seven beats into three beats followed by four, but then the verses reverse the split to four beats followed by three. Absolutely brilliant!
I agree. He's a genius.
@@ProfessorofRock He is indeed!
Really gives the emphasis that something is off. I love the unique beat.
Peter Gabriel is still a genius, his latest album I/o is brilliant and as strong as most any of his solo albums. When you compare him to what some of his peers from his era are doing today, he is still producing music that is so worth listening to.
Came here to say the exact same thing. i/o is fantastic. Four kinds of horses is my favorite. Saw him live last summer and couldn't stop thinking this was perhaps the last time. None of us are getting younger.
Solsbury hill definitely does transcend genre and time. It sounds as fresh today as it did when it came out, over 40 years ago! Several videos splice together footage of him performing it over decades, and the audiences love it just as much in 2020 as in 1978.
The best line is "You can keep my things they've come to take me home." You know you have really left something behind when they ask if you want your things back and you say "Keep them."
I love Peter! Someone recently said to me Genesis didn’t go anywhere until Peter Gabriel left. I said that was because Phil Collins took the band in a more commercial and pop influenced style. When Peter left people in England responded as though John Lennon quit The Beatles. It’s apples and oranges and Peter isn’t the kind of pop you just enjoy listening to like pop but The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and So are masterpieces and he is an incredible musician! Not everyone realizes also that he started as the drummer. His bandmates heard his voice and convinced him to step out front.
So true.
You explained it perfectly.
@@samanthab1923 Thank you
@@mariskacandice890 Wait....are you saying Peter also started out as the drummer as did Phil? I never knew that.

One of the most talented and beloved musical artists from the UK. The voice, the stage presence at his peak, the song writing, truly such a wonderful human being!
I immediately fell in love with this song when it hit the states. I’ve always love Genesis with Peter. Then he starts on his own and it only gets better. Solsbury Hill is my favorite. Then, my daughter’s name came from Games Without Frontiers. Finally, anyone who’s seen Peter walk off the stage, then followed by the band, while the crowd continued to sing, Biko knows they’ve been part of something special. Thank you Adam…and Thank you Peter.
Solsbury Hill is my favourite Peter Gabriel song top tune that sadly missed the top 40 here in Australia peaking at 45 in May 1977 . Mystery to me how it missed
Salisbury 😊
Nope….it’s SOLSBURY
There was no mistaking this album for a Genesis album, definitely a departure and left no doubt Peter could and was a solo artist that had something to say and could make music that would stand the test of time. I can see this song being used for film and other mediums 100 years from now. Fantastic episode professor, well written!
Great post MY NAME!
He’s just an expert song crafter.
"I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" is still such an amazing song, but I'm glad that era of Genesis changed when it did. It made it worth more!
Agreed. Love both eras!
I called it the lawnmower song when I was a lad in the 80's
Hum di dum di dum
I call it the song that Richard Hammond from The Grand Tour absolutely hates 😂
Indeed! Phil is an amazing frontman.
I am reminded of an article I once read in the NY Times by the late Gian Carlo Menotti about the intricacies that Mozart employed in the pursuit of his art. The more I listen to Peter Gabriel the more I notice similarities with what Menotti described.
Peter Gabriel is the consummate Artist. Solsbury Hill is a refreshing breeze of artistic optimism.
Thanks!
Both geniuses.
Learning about who Peter Gabriel is was a slanted experience for me. In my youth, the only song of his I knew was "Big Time". There's the part in which my first taste of Genesis (or the voice of Phil Collins) was the single "That's All", and my first exposure to the name was the music from *Invisible Touch.* I didn't learn Peter's name or that he was the original Genesis frontman until I had become a teen. The chronology in which I first recall hearing "Salisbury Hill" was that the film Phenomenon had just come out, the soundtrack of which included another track of his, "I Have the Touch". So, it was probably 1997 when I first heard this song. Right or wrong, I found myself comparing "Salisbury Hill" with "I Have the Touch". Later, when I finally began hearing material from the first 6 Genesis albums and juxtaposed it against Peter's solo records, I could tell the difference, but I could also pick out the genetic thread (if you'll permit me) of how much he contributed to Genesis and vice versa (which is probably the last thing Peter himself would've wanted).
Thanks Eric!
If this song hasn't helped me in the act of making a crucial life-changing decision, there is the possibility that it still could.
I’m surprised it wasn’t Sledgehammer that you heard first
I was still in high school when *Solsbury Hill* hit the radio. Fantastic song, I remember being swept into a very profound, realistic daydream. It's one of those songs that saved me from the hardships of being an introvert and an outcast. Years later, the early 2000's if memory serves, I had the pleasure of seeing Peter in concert, his daughter accompanying him onstage. They sang *Games without Frontiers* while on a Segway, rolling back & forth on the stage. And of course, the light bulb jacket from *Sledgehammer.* As I approach retirement now, I look forward to being an introvert again. I'll be able to catch up on all the music I've been missing out on for all these decades. Thank you Professor, for reawakening all these great memories from my youth. 🙏♥
I chose to listen to this one like a podcast with my eyes closed because when I get the chance, I love to listen to this song that way. Just close my eyes and take the whole song in. It's by far my favorite Peter Gabriel song.

Saw Peter Gabriel in Brisbane, Australia, way back in 1994 on his Secret World tour. Absolutely brilliant. Not just a concert but a total theatrical performance. During Salisbury Hill he came down and danced his way through the crowd and the band never missed a beat. His bass player had mini drum sticks on his index and middle fingers that he used to hit the strings. I’d never seen anyone do that. It was pure genius!

When I met my husband in 2001, he came to visit my home in Texas (he lived in California) after we had talked on the phone for months. There were a few red flags that I should have heeded, one was that he _hated_ Peter Gabriel, along with other music artists I love.
I decided that was too petty of a reason not to sell my house, move 1500 miles and marry him.
Although we stuck it out for almost 14 years, I regret that I didn't heed those red flags.

The “Car” album just rocks! Definitely my favorite post Genesis album 🤘🤘
I love that he wouldn't name his albums!
@@ProfessorofRock He said he did that because he wanted his albums to be like magazine editions that he would put out every year. After the fourth one, he finally relented to the record companies whineing about it, and from them on, put out albums with the shortest album titles he could possibly come up with. This is why from then on, all of his regular albums were two letters long. As for PG4, he never titled it Security. That was purely the record company meddling.
@illegal_space_alien. You may already know this. Regarding Peter Gabriel not wanting to name/title his albums, I read this “theory” on the subject back in the last century:
PG 1 - “Car” - Do
PG 2 - “Scratch” - Re
PG 3 - “Melt” - Mi
PG 4 - “Security” - Fah
PG 5 - “So” - So

Cool story Professor! Awesome how Genius grew after Peter!! And so did his career!🤘🔥
Both were so great. What's your favorite Genesis song?
@@ProfessorofRock “Invisible Touch”
I got chills when you said grab your things we’re going home 🙏
I never really knew for sure what the meaning was or why it felt so powerful, but it always felt very spiritual and stirred deep emotions inside. Still does.
This episode completely changed my view of this song. Thank you. That said, what a f**k up on the part of Ezrin to kill the "make your life a taxi not a tomb" line. That was brilliant.
I just saw Peter Gabriel last September in Detroit. What an incredible live force. I'm a metalhead since 1978, but PG put on one of the best live shows I've seen.
Throughout PG's career--with Genesis and solo--he has always been a genius collaborator. Those he works with bring out the best from him and he brings out the best from them.
Genesis was so crazy that all four individual artists, particularly Phil Collins, had extraordinary careers solo. The fact that the three guys got back together and kept making significant songs.
I was riding a Greyhound bus from Waterloo to Guelph Ont in 1988, second year of university, listening to I and II on my sony walkman. Road trip to drink in Gu. One of the best road trip with high school freinds I had. Thanks for the memory
My knowledge of Solsbury Hill came after the album So, which i loved then found out Peter Gabriel was in Genesis then found new song(old) and i went Whoo!! these are great!! Been a fan since the late 80's
I had a spiritual awakening on a hill in 2020 (not Solsbury, but it was an iron age hill fort). I never knew what the song was about, but always loved it. I heard in 2021 and suddenly realised what it was about. It pretty much summed up my life after my awakening. I've listened to Solsbury Hill hundreds of times since.
I managed to go there in 2023. I had the song on repeat as i walked thrre from the car park.
Keep up the good work Adam.
Solsbury Hill is one of my all time favorite songs.
I caught this song in a fleeting moment on the radio in the early 80's and did not catch the name, I did not hear it again for years and when I did. I again did not catch the name of the song or artist. After forgetting about it, it made a resurgence and was being played a lot. Became my favorite Gabriel song.
What a debut album. I remembered hearing this song for the first time. It was spiritual moving. Being in my preteens, it just moved me. Music like this just puts you in a place where you can be content.
Thanks!
It’s just an uplifting song.
This is certainly my favourite Gabriel song.
Cool!
My favorite Gabriel song is Biko
One of the most important songs ever written
RIP Stephen Biko
End all Apartheid
Mine is Family Portrait or Mercy Street
Wow. That song is SAD.
CAR has been one of my favorites since I first heard it. 49 years ago .Every cut. PG is in my top 5 best most creative Artists.
