  • Newcastle United face Manchester United on Wednesday with both clubs competing for a place in Europe next season.
But is the increased strain on squads that comes with qualifying for UEFA’s lesser competitions actually worth it? Or would a season out of Europe allow both sides to regroup and build again?
Ayo is joined by Talk of the Devils Carl Anka and Pod on the Tynne’s George Caulkin to debate and compare the two United teams.

Newcastle arguably got into Europe a season too early with their lack of depth showing this season when injuries struck, that's what they need to prioritise over anything else this summer.

and we also got the 'group of death' that meant we couldn't use our squad at all and had to pick our strongest 11 for every match...same in the cups to be honest apart from maybe blackburn away which was still a tricky match due to our injuries at the time

We were too early and overshoot too high. I think we would do better with less intensity of Europa League instead. However, it is important for EH and his staff to understand the effect of UCL on our physical limitations. We need to improve how we do things and the young squad for our backup. A really good and interesting discussion - Carl and George are some of the best journalists and writers working for the Athletic and in the football sphere at the moment, and this was a really eloquent, funny and informative discussion both about where the clubs are at the moment and indeed the different stages that they are at. It's a strange situation to be in when despite the fact that Newcastle have just had their Director of Football poached, are out of all competitions and dropped points at the weekend, the mood seems to be a lot more optimistic than at Old Trafford.
Personally, I have a sneaking suspicion that Man United will get the win at Old Trafford and will better Newcastle's result on the last day of the season regardless of form, but that's the pessimist in me talking.

NUFC have the best excuse in that they are a good way ahead of the rest when it comes to days lost to key players through injury. Teams grow as the season goes on. Same as last season when Licha, Case and Eriksen came in and bonded. This season that growth was interrupted by injuries. Case in point, Evans/Casemiro partnership has gotten better over time because of playing together consistently. Imagine where the rock of how we played last season(Licha/Varane/case/Malacia/Shaw) went missing alongside the new signings so in essence the team on the pitch was worse than what we had last season

Channel 5 used to show live NFL really late at night and I think occasionally baseball too and I think the BBC might show NFL highlights now but I'm not sure US sports are that popular here. I went to Japan a few years ago and was surprised how into baseball they were. They have these practice pitches with mechanical pitchers in lots of places (I accidentally pressed the wrong setting and the speed nearly took me out so i now appreciate how hard it is to even get near to hitting the ball)
