Do you really think he is sane? More like living in a bubble. There is no global east & south. Only global west & south when it comes to decision making & choices. He has no clue about Asia otherwise he would not have said, the global south is led by India. India is not powerful enough for other countries to follow.
He has openly supported the United States of Europe since 2008.

I started listening to you at the start of the Ukraine war, and though I've always considered myself a resonable enlightened, Danish citizen I have learned so much more about the greater ways of the world from you. Great parts of the world is no longer a completely black or at least murky and opage box.
And for that I am very grateful, to you and others you have recommended.
And I take what I have learned from you with me out in MY world to relieve and calm others in those, often gigantic, fears that I can now see are unwarranted or misunderstood.

1: I enjoy your take on global issues.
2: Global West has and continues to have all the actual "power"
3: Global East and Global South only seem to have power because they've been elevated by globalization.
4: As it (globalization) collapses both will slide back into irrelevance.
5: The reasons are simple. The fundamentals haven't changed. The period we're leaving was the anomaly. We're just going back to the norm.
I am so in league and agreement with your assessments and style of presentation. I think we must be very strong in our pursuit of good in the face of those who ardently pursue control for bad purposes. The evil of the far right is envious of personal freedom and aggressively seeks to disrupt that path. The battle is upon us and we must steel ourselves with resolve to enact and protect freedom for ourselves and future generations. I think evil fights to destroy, any weakness or lack of conviction in confronting this threat will make our path more torturous. Thank you for being the most vivid proponent of freedom, history will never forget. I would look forward to joining your team.

Very excited about the book! Finding/imposing order on the world is so human. Sometimes we see patterns where they don't really exist or our attempts at categorization are not particularly helpful. No one uses the term 'third world' anymore. Now everyone says 'developing nations,' which is less of a category and more of a vague description. You used to say 'East, West and the rest.' I see 'the rest' has been organized into the 'South.' This suggests the same level of pattern and cohesion, the same unity, found in the East and West. I'm not so sure about this framing. 'The rest' may actually be a more accurate, though less satisfying, description.
Small thing, but maybe put a *notation on the screen at 3:54 that is was Feb 2022, not Feb 2024 when the full on Russia-Ukraine war started.

I hope this will be a valuable series.
It seems to me that the book needs a preface that discusses the "How we got here." Even though the entire book is a "How we got here." But I think that ignoring 19th and 20th Century, European and American Colonialism is missing a huge part of the story of how we got here. Case in point, the Arab Israeli conflict can trace its roots to the "Post Colonial" state of affairs and Post WWII hubris.
PS. As with some TV Series, it's important to have 1 or 2 series long story arcs. I think one of them might be The rise and fall and rise of Authoritarianism or how international institutions are impotent with regards to promoting democracy, or egalitarianism on a global scale.
More to the failures of the Ottoman Empire and the sudden need in the West to please the Jews after WW2…
Looking forward to the new book! In regards to your thesis, I've always wondered as to why the global south is destined to be the next king maker.
I don't know if it's destined to be a kingmaker - at least North America will continue to have a strong position barring extrordinary and unforeseen changes - but certainly its weight will increase considerably. Even a single word should be a decent answer as to why: demographics.
It's the other way round! 'Ordo Ab Chao' = out of chaos, comes order. Connect the rest.
Alex, Ihave been waiting for this book for a year now. This should be good. I will let you know that you should expect to be hearing from me often. I will also let you know that our worlds are not so dissimilar and that your premise is not so different from my thesis on History. The biggest difference is that I am 72 and tired. My first question is on demograhics and the effect of tang ping in the global east and its corollary quiet quitting in the global west. "In the course of history, men come to see that iron necessity is neither iron nor necessary." - Nietzsche.
Hi Alex, the series is very well done, but you never analyzed the reason behind the war started and who started it including provocation etc. Could you pls share a full analysis of the conflict?
What is nice about Alex's style is that as a communicator, he understands that foreign policy is so often effected by foreign relationships. No one will listen to you if they sense an outwardly condescending attitude. Imo that is the difference between Alex's understanding of practice (the actual worldview of Russian leadership) versus mearsheimer's understanding of theory (the theoretical, "logical actions" that are out signs be taken by russia). One is an academic who only sees tangible factors and what is on paper, the other sees less or intangible contributing factors (body language, national pride, politics of course) that drive individuals and organizations.
“Digital Democracy or Digital Dictatorship”, this sounds very interesting indeed, I hope you finish this one at some point! I would be very interested to hear your opinions on the recently released book on “Techno Feudalism” by Yanis Varoufakis. I completely understand that the present world situation mat be more pressing. I look forward to this series of lectures.

Planning a Spanish translation? It seems the only books they use to translate are those heavily academic or journalist. It is difficult to find some friendly reading in Spanish towards que power shifts nowadays.

Looking forward to this series, Alex. What you're describing is the shift of humanity from warring in old dualistic systems (e.g. black/white, western/eastern, north/south) into more inclusive or integrated systems. Duality creates conflict and chaos (either/or), while polarity includes the black and white poles and the whole spectrum of grays in between (both/and). There is inherent unity in polarity, which is about unity in diversity, which naturally leads to higher acting thoughts, behaviors and actions in both individuals and nations. This is the way forwards.
In 2007, the Fabian Society ( David Miliband) told us "the power base is moving from West to East". This is an agenda.

Love the idea and structure of the book, Professor; sounds promising. However, I would strongly consider omitting the anecdotal/personal perspective. It's best to do one thing very well rather than spread yourself thin. In my view, the book will likely strike a more 'serious' tone if it tightly sticks to the core substance of the political analysis, rather than broach into semi-tangential anecdotes. Including the latter may give the book a more self-indulgent, less vigorous, 'wishy-washy' tone, which would be a shame. Is it a serious political analysis? Or is it a sort of autobiography? Do one or do the other. Or, do them both, but separately.
Are you ordering what another person should write? Just write your own book if you have something of interest to say;)

Good point! If you listen to Peyer Zeihan he emphatically states deglobalisation is on the rise...
Over rationalize the past, over dramatize the present, under estimate there future.

A bit hard to see how one can take a deep look at the world and be hopeful about the future. We are in the middle of the 6th mass extinction, for no other reason than humans failing to grasp the impact of their activity since the industrial revolution. That inability to open our eyes is not changing anytime soon. Then, as if exterminating nature was not enough, we are ramping up tensions between the different parts of the world, which guarantees that we won't be able to cooperate to the extent necessary to solve the world's problems. Good luck.

This really shows that how western your opinions are that you are still declaring an end of an era(I'm talking about end of the post cold war era) when there is a war in Europe.
You said it yourself that we dramatize the present, and I'd suggest we have some cognitive biases too. So as a Finn I think you give Russia too much weight in global affairs; lots of realist thinkers do so too. Their demographics, warlike behaviour and fossil fuel reliant economy mean they are in permanent decline.
The foundations of civilisation, the parameters of discussion, the agenda setting and control of capital and resources has already been set by the west. They are the incumbent power. The east is just trying to steer it in their direction to share some of the spoils, look at Chinese investment in Africa, in new tech, in education. And the south still don't have much agency, they undermine themselves, sell themselves out cheap and suffer from internecine squabbles. So it will be a slow transition of power to China and some other capable countries to allow them to level up. A multipolar world is not a new idea. The question is whether they can do that in time for the environment to recover or at least not degrade to a dangerous level. We have the technology to allow it, but not the political leadership. So, the result will be a race between structural change in the west and the adoption of new transport, energy, food, security and other life support systems on the one hand, and on the other hand a slow western civilisational collapse. With current leadership there is no chance of the west 'making it', but as the environmental crisis deepens, the possibility of more radical thinking opens up. Necessity is the mother of invention, etc. So I don't fear and east / west bi-polar world, that's not new. But I do fear we're too slow to adapt to serious mess we've made to the earth's systems and that will result in severe civilisational stresses.
Looking forward to your book, professor Stubb, but you better write it fast. How long will Global East even be a thing? 1) demographic realities in Russia and China are devastating (peter zeihan), 2) the Global West has totally decoupled from Russia and is rapidly decoupling from China, 3) Putin and Xi are unsustainable models of governance without meaningful politburos, 4) Xi-thought and Putin vertical of power are wholly hollow principles. The West/East/South is (to me) a temporarily helpful model but it is quickly becoming Allies and Others. Russia and China are not going away, but nothing gravitates towards them other than violent despots and when they do, Allies don't even care. I guess that is part of your thesis.
People - also in politics - do what they do because they want and can, and over time - also because they have to. This will be fun to read about. I disagree with one thing: we are not heading towards a multipolar world. We are heading to a nullpolar world. The US simply no longer has the economic strength to be a global hegemon, hence our problems. Russia and China may have thought this was an opportunity for them, but for now they are losing their chances. The European Union - which is probably the only one left on the battlefield with full money - is apparently not mentally ready to take over the baton from the US. But the EU is only 5% of the world's 8 billion people. Maybe the richest, but not particularly numerous. But let's hope it's more respected than we think. Because the European voice of reason and "good management" will be very, very necessary for all of us...
I can't wait for this book!! Alex has a way of making you feel like he's talking to you. Sharing real thoughts that rattle around in his head based on experiences. But never far from his core passion of people. I sometimes feel politics gets in the way of that core, but the more you rationalize the local & global view, the better the understanding. To ultimately support the passion. And I'll be honest; I love a good andote, or many. 🤍
