    Nice job man! Really spent time to get it into our skulls and fingers. Like the way a Rake can become a Chuck ala Chic and a full bar strummed Rake can become a Jimi H intro to All Along T W! Respect.

    Cool! This is the type of practicing that convinces people you have finally lost your marbles. It’s one of those techniques that takes a long time to perfect if that’s even possible. There’s a great set of 5 lessons on CZcams where B.B. King shows a lot of his methods. One of them shows his raking technique. He does a G arpeggio and as with most blues techniques, nobody does it better than B.B.
    Outstanding lesson Corey!

    Most likely was me remarking about extending 'The Rake is Dirty' technique off your nice Texas Blues Rhythm Factory course, Corey.....you know me.......I'm perpetually guilty of making reference to specific lessons off your years old courses like you have instant recall!! Glad you covered this............I thought we'd have to learn raking from your ever present Thursday landscapers!! One thing that would have highlighted this lesson though.....is review of that cool quick SRV slide from below the 12th fret for emphasis!! This occurs around the 1:00-1:14 minute mark on your initial demonstration of this raking technique!! Very cool lesson and I especially liked how you emphasized to your CZcams fans that this is a fantastic means of practicing our pentatonic scales at different positions on the fretboard!! Jim C.

    Thanks Corey, you got me raking! Observation: In many situations when relying on the left hand for muting, I have to mute where the related chord notes are, because if I mute elsewhere, the sound of the notes on those muted frets does leak in and change the color of my main note.

    Great demo Corey. I remember Rake is Dirty from Rhythm Factory: Texas Blues at TrueFire. l think the explanation was good, but I find the most difficult part is the vibrato, as you don't keep your hand flat for the vibrato, so can't mute the strings so well, so can't keep chugging away. I think some more explanation about this tricky bit would be good.

    Many thanks for this lesson on the "rake", very instructive and useful. Could you please watch Robben Ford play "midnight comes too soon" on RTL france and explain the technique of a rake incorporated into a rake with a pulloff he uses on the B minor chord of the main verse.I've seen many people including yourself play this kind of thing, RJ Ronquillo and Matt Schofield use it a lot, it includes a rake with a pulloff to finish maybe on the 3rd of a 9th chord for example. This lesson has been great but it doesn't explain what's driving me mad, don't mean to be ungrateful your lessons are among the best out there but can you go the extra mile on this one ?

    Not sure how that could be taught any better - just a matter of practicing it after this video! But I do have one question: at 10:36, about playing the lower strings, you said you have to get the fingers “up here to really match it”? Can you rephrase or explain that part? Thanks 👍🏻

    • @coreycongilio

      The fingers on your left hand need to reach up mute the lower strings

  • @samstamos427
    @samstamos427 Před 3 lety

    At 4:26-4:30: Corey- "..you see, I push that note down right when I get to it." Sam. "OH! Well, hell!. That' an epiphany.." So when you're raking a down stroke, your hitting the strings before the "note' and just muting the strings after the note so they don't ring out. The upstrokes are all muted rakes late in the video demonstrating the SRV technique. Alternatively, early in the video (1:05-1:40) you're doing the opposite, raking upward. So raking can be done in either direction then? You just need to be aware of raking before the note, hitting the note, then muting? Thank you Corey..

    Sorry for noob question. But when he says key of E, am I to assume E minor? (As this is mostly a blues centric channel)

    • @danielbarth
      @danielbarth Před 3 lety +1

      As a rule of thumb, when somebody says"key of E", they refer to E major. If it was E minor, they would specify that. In Blues, you often play the minor pentatonic over a major key/chord because the major chords in Blues are often dominant seven chords, including the minor seven note, which is also in the minor pentatonic. And the clash between minor third in the pentatonic and the major third in the chord highlights the blue note that sits between those two notes.

    • @mezzuna

    Alternate picking, legato, slides, etc are mostly repetition that can be learned at slow speeds and built up.. raking feels more like art or witchcraft; you can practice for weeks/months.. nothing. Then suddenly, something clicks and you're a Jedi! Point is, don't stop trying, everyone can learn it, but it's a right pain in the ass at first.
