Antony has been entertaining fans of Ajax for a couple of seasons now. His skills, tricks and flair get supporters off their seats. He rose to prominence as part of Erik ten Hag’s Ajax team, so continuing his development with ten Hag at Manchester United makes sense.
But what else will he offer Man United? What kind of player is he? Where will he play? Jon Mackenzie explains.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm excited to see the player Dalot becomes going forward. With a player like Antony hugging the touchline in front of him, and Varane and Casemiro covering his left centre, he'll have much more freedom and space to overlap/invert his runs up the field and get involved. He's quick, he works hard, he has a good eye for the game, he can take a player on and he can deliver solid crosses. I don't think people give him the props he deserves, nor do they see the potential for growth. That's just my opinion.

If you look up Sancho's numbers with Dortmund, his goals and assists per minute were both far better on the left than the right.
As for Antony, this video did a good job of explaining why he is so valuable. Antony can score and assist, but G+A does not represent his primary value as a winger. He is a ball progressor who can take on any defender or find teammates. He creates pressure on the opponent's defensive structure by pulling one or often two defenders very wide, which creates opportunities for teammates inside the box. He does a completely different job than Sancho, and the two should complement each other nicely.
This is an obvious overpay but Antony is a very dynamic player with a rare set of skills.

@@andyashton5955 he never needed to. His numbers are pretty solid for a tricky winter. He's not an inside forward, he's a winger who cuts in to create chances and potentially get shots off. The numbers are good enough, and no doubt will be improved upon under more coaching from ETH and more development given his age. It's definitely an overpay, but he's not a bad player by any means. People also bring up his Eredivisie stats from last season(8 goals, 4 assists), but conveniently leave out that he only played 23 games, meaning he averaged 0.52 goal involvements per match, a solid return for his style of player.

It feels like we are in a period where transfer fee doesn't reflect footballing ability. Lukaku and Grealish were £100M but failed to impress, though in Grealish's case it seems like he fits a system.

To spend 100 mil on a player who proved to not be the most essential part of his system, is baffling to me. Our most influential players last year imo where: 1 Tadic, 2 Blind, 3 Martinez, 4 Mazraoui, Haller, Antony, Alvarez.
In his years at Ajax, ETH played with Ziyech Neres and Antony on that right wing. All completely different player of which Ziyech looked like the best fit by a mile. Antony did make Mazraoui look amazing, so Dalot should be the happiest with his arrival. But i would've thought any style left footed right winger would suffice.
Antony brought quickness flair and a lovely left foot, but arguably looked better in Schreuder'e (the new manager) system. The last 2 games ge was available, we saw him run in behind and switch flanks a lot more compared to under ETH.

I like Antony but I’m just afraid the fee United paid is gonna unfairly put a target in his back like it always does. If they would just do business with a plan in mind I think they either could have bought this player earlier for less money or a similar prospect for less money. The price tag is gonna put a lot of pressure on a young player in a new league.

I think with Antony being there in the right wing, Wan Bissaka can revamp his career. Defensively he is good and if he finds someone who is a winger and staying out wide, and Bissaka not necessarily will make a run. He just needs to insure Casemiro and center backs by being there on the right hand side waiting for the counter to stop. This will be a brilliant duo but Dalot is in form and will be hard to replace. We need this in the team ofcourse. Exciting times ahead.

Very few players can be bought for any system and fulfill a specific role without compromising their playstyle. McGuire is a an old school center back, not that intelligent when it comes to any sort of offensive duties, he always had support of two defensive players at Leicester, United brings him in and expects him to be a completely different centerback.
Some players only perform well if they feel they are the stars in the team, they revel in fame, their skill diminishes as soon as they are another fish in the barrel as their motivation just isn´t squad focused, such players play well above their level when allowed to groom their ego.
Two examples of style and mental aptitude which you have to consider when signing a player, there are more aspects to take into consideration, some players are simply far more versatile than others, United has been appalling at making the right choices. Let´s see what the future brings, Antony may prevail where others failed.

what i dont understand is i thot sancho was our solution to the right hand side, which he has been doing fine recently. in terms of 1v1 ability, sancho is not any worse than antony i'd think. i understand sancho and antony are slightly different types of players but if sancho wasnt the solution how is antony going to make a huge difference?

    • @dafunkyshit
      @dafunkyshit Před rokem

because sancho can be switched to the left wing permanently. he does well there. if you watched the game against southampton he got double-teamed a lot against them so his threat was neutralised a lot. the other winger in this game (elanga) wasn't able to exploit the space that was made when southampton overloaded sancho as he is not as much as an attacking threat as antony is. man united has been so left-wing dominant for years. antony will be our only left-footed right winger. we need that badly. so the idea is that we will have better balance by having too technically proficient wingers on both sides. sancho is not as quick as antony but has better decision making abilities. antony on the other hand has great acceleration and technical ability but lacks (at this point) good decision making. he is also a fairly decent crosser of the ball.
what we really, really need is an aerially dominant centre forward who can press. if ronaldo stays, he obviously is great aerially so will be the main beneficiary of having antony there. if he doesn't stay, we will be in trouble because neither winger will have anyone to cross to!
this is why we were linked with sasa kalajdzic a few weeks ago (although he is going to wolves unfortunately).
we might go in for depay at the last minute because he is cheap and available and decent in the air (if ronaldo does leave).
